| #2meth0dicalJun 03, 2008 23:42:29 | interested in this but I have no idea |
| #3dralnuJun 04, 2008 0:06:46 | Ring of Spell Battle from MIC. Use it to counter spell any dispel attempts against you. |
| #4surrealJun 04, 2008 1:28:56 | Removing line of sight/effect is the simplest. |
| #5bejikJun 04, 2008 2:07:44 | Master Specialist will help for Abj specialists and Spells as I recall, am AFB right now so I'm going on memory. I think one of the Esoteric let's you add you MS level as a bonus on the DC to dispel any abjuration spells you cast. |
| #6brainpiercingJun 04, 2008 2:14:23 | Removing line of sight/effect is the simplest. It may be simple, but it's generally hardly practicable. I'd say Ring of Counterspells, of course, with (G)DM, and the Ring of Spell Battle vs. other dispelling spells, such as Chain dispel. At high levels a single casting of Effulgent Epuration can save your from any dispells targetted at YOU, but unfortunately it has a hugely visible spell effect, which means the enemy caster can just target the spell-effect directly, and basically screw with the top 9th level abjuration spell with a meagre 6th level spell. This is a major drawback of Effulgent Epuration. It will however, quite succesfully protect you from Chain Dispel, since that will jump from target to target, and won't pick spell effects. So a layered defence is best: Ring of Counterspells (or two) and Effulgent Epuration. Area dispel also still works. The best way of course is just having a higher CL than the other guy. That needs optimising, and chances are a BBEG will have a higher CL, too. Now pay in mind that any round the BBEG spends trying to dispel someone, he's most probably not doing too much else. Although metamagic could screw with that. |

| #8reisJun 04, 2008 2:25:19 | wall of force forcecage prismatic wall/sphere epic spells using the ward seed (esoteric aegis $$) |
| #9brainpiercingJun 04, 2008 2:50:32 | wall of force Putting a Prismatic Sphere around yourself just means the other guy can't attack you. But what are YOU going to do to the other guy? Prismatic Sphere is pretty much like an 8th level time-stop, except both parties get lots of buff-rounds. Granted, Wall of Force lets you cast spells through it that don't require LOE. A wall of Force in front of yourself seems like a viable tactic. |
| #10cruJun 04, 2008 2:50:41 | Spellblade weapon enhancement (+1 price) from Magic of Faerun can make you immune to one spell. |

If you move the ward into an occupied space the enemy can just pass through it. Of course you can walk around with the wards at all, which is a bonus. Can you cast spells through them? I don't think so, but I could be wrong. |
| #13friendlyfrogJun 04, 2008 6:46:38 | Having a cohort manifest Dispelling buffer on you is a start. |
| #14cjeroweJun 04, 2008 7:13:18 | At higher levels, I have always enjoyed the Otilukes Telekinetic Sphere / project image trick. Also, Red-Wizard of Thay / Archmage is a viable route (+5 CL for all schools via Arcane Power from Archmage / +5 CL to specialty school via Red Wizard) = +10 CL for Abjuration spells. |
| #15WyvernhandJun 04, 2008 7:57:50 | Are you a cleric or a wizard? A cleric can get a decent dispel level with the application of a few tricks. The Ring of Greater Countespells (DMGII) loaded with a tricked out Greater Dispel Magic works great. Take Church Inquisitor and possibly Radiant Servant to get the Inquisition and maybe Purification domains. Inquisition gives a +4 unnamed bonus to dispel checks, and purificaiton gives +1 CL with all Abjuration spells. Now, an 11th level cleric who pops a Bead of Karma and uses Divine Spell power will be casting GDM with a 20th CL, with a +4 bonus for a total of +24 on the check. That means you counterspell caster level 14 dispells on a roll of 1 or higher, as an 11th level character. That's strong. An average roll of 10 counters incoming 24th CL dispels. This also has the benefit of increasing you CL during your morning buff time which not only makes your buffs harder to dispel, but also makes them stronger and last longer. This could mean the difference between a +3 magic vestaments and a +5, or a +3 greater magic weapon and a +5. |

Counterspelling Dispel Magic with Dispel Magic doesn't need a caster level check. Same spell always counterspells automatically. (Which is what makes Rings of Counterspell good - and bad, since they only work when they have the same spell stored. So GDM <> Chain Dispel.) Rather use the CL buffs when casting other buffs - so they don't get dispelled in the first place. Or use them when dispelling enemy casters yourself. Cohorts are of course always a viable option. Always have one standing by with a ready-action counterspell. If the cohort has some other uses, like crafting, you've won. But still, you could do so much more with a cohort, and you might lose him if he stands around next to you. A rebuked undead spellcaster is a nice option - if you can get one. You could also have a critter with a (G)DM SLA - since you can use SLAs for counterspelling, but IIRC cannot counterspell them yourself. |

It doesn't matter if you get hit by a lowly Dispel Magic, a Reaving/Slashing Dispel or a MDJ, you can counter it with a Ring of Greater Counterspells loaded with a GDM. You also have the option of countering the every day Doomy Spells of Doomy Doom (of Doom), although you may want to save your counterspelly goodness for being the target of targeted dispels of various shapes and flavors. A casting of Battlemagic Perception and keeping a GDM in reserve can counter another attempt. That's 3 counters per day with BMP + 2 Rings of G-Cspells, or more if you reload your rings/Pearl spells. |
| #18empirateJun 04, 2008 10:50:40 | I recently stumbled upon one powerful method, much to my dislike, actually: One of the PCs in the group I DM for has the Spellfire Wielder feat (FR campaign). The PC is kind of a gish (Dragon Disciple, likes to buff up and Power Attack the enemies' asses), so usually there's a lot of visible magic going on with him: blinking, enlargement, shield etc., making him a prime Dispelling target. So in a recent battle, I had an enemy spellcaster cast Dispel Magic, seeing as how the generic minions didn't stand a chance against the PC in question. The player argued her character could just absorb the Dispel, adding 3 levels to his spellfire total. I was ******, but couldn't say much. A targeted Dispel has a "Target: one creature or object" entry, which is enough to allow spellfire absorption. So I ruled the Dispel attempt could be, and was, absorbed. In mid to high level campaigns, Spellfire Wielder might well be worth it just for the immunity to targeted Dispel attempts! |
| #19zerosumJun 04, 2008 11:07:42 | Well, it requires a readied action to absorb though, right? |
| #20sinfire_titanJun 04, 2008 14:04:42 | Only one surefire way to avoid being Dispelled: Kill them before they cast it or never fight them in the first place. The other? As Cru said, the Spellblade enhancement. |
| #21phaedrusxyJun 04, 2008 15:50:31 | Ring of Counterspells for targetted (Greater) Dispel. Keep a Magic Mouth on you with a caster level 1 higher than your other buffs, to get dispelled in case you get hit by an area Dispel. |
| #22Omen_of_PeaceJun 04, 2008 17:50:56 | See the handbook in my sig. It isn't quite complete (I haven't gone into the Shadow Weave's Tenacious Magic for instance), but there are a few ideas in there. It would be helpful if you explained in what circumstances you wish to avoid a dispel. |
| #23brainpiercingJun 04, 2008 18:03:32 | That's not how a Greater Ring of counterspells works: Function 1 is to counter a pre-cast spell. This has to be the same spell as the one being cast. So you won't benefit from a tricked out CL. Function 2 is to counter-spell any spell being cast within a distance of 100ft. No preparation is necessary (and no pre-cast spell). As such, it won't help to have tricked out the GDM in the GRoCS, you need to boost your CL DURING the encounter that the secondary function dispelling takes place. There is a CL 20 cap on it, too. Or was this errata'ed? |

Keep a Magic Mouth on you with a caster level 1 higher than your other buffs, to get dispelled in case you get hit by an area Dispel. This is pretty much the most helpful thing ever for my current character, bytheway. I was previously going to have someone craft a few contingent dancing lights spells onto my character, which costs about twice as much. Thank you. :D |
