| #1the_blackstaffJan 08, 2009 10:50:39 | I know that shadowdancers and very high level rangers get it but after a quick look at most books i have it seems that's about the only way. You guys know of any other effective way to get this class feature? I'm trying to get Hide in plain sight for a melee/roguish build and I guess a 1 lvl dip in shadowdancer is not that big of a deal but I'd like to know if there's any other alternatives i could have overlooked. Thanks a bunch |
| #2jameswilliamogleJan 08, 2009 12:45:17 | The Shadow Template in Tome of Magic does it for +1 LA along w/ a bunch of other decent abilities. |
| #3atomickitkatJan 08, 2009 12:47:35 | I vaguely remember mid-level Assassins getting it. The rest are templates like Shadow Creature(Lords of Madness), possibly Dark Creatures(Tome of Magic). |
| #4winternachtJan 08, 2009 13:09:45 | Ranger (PHB) Level 17 = natural enviroment Shadowspy PrC (CC) Level 9 = sunlit area Shadowdancer PrC (DMG) Level 1 = shadowy area Dark Creature Template (ToM) LA+1 = shadowy area Dark Creature Template (ToM) via Magic Item (22k) = shadowy area Assassin (DMG) Level 8 = some sort of shadow, other than his own The Shadow Creature Template (LoM) gives "shadowblend", allowing to meld with the shadows. |

| #7just_my_2_centsJan 08, 2009 15:49:38 | 9 levels in Dark Lantern (PrC, Five Nations page 69) gives HiPS in any, I repeat, any conditions. That's pretty unique, but 9 levels may be a bit too big of an investment for your tastes. |

| #10NiteCyperJan 08, 2009 20:15:27 | I've been studying the ways of getting HiPS early, for a while. I recommend: Blend into Shadows feat (DotU) + Warlock/Dragonfire Adept dip for Darkness invocation. Hide in Plain Sight as a swift-action. Keep the PEBBLE OF DARKNESS in a pouch at your hip, or swallow the damn thing. Warforged (Scout) + Incarnate Construct template + Dark template/Shadow/Chameleon/Lolth-Touched/etc. Cheesy. Hellbreaker 1 (FC2) gives an advanced form of HiPS. High prereqs. Mantle of Flame/Fellmist Robe soulmelds at first level. Crusader + Martial Study (Cloak of Deception) for continuous invisibility. Primordial Giant template (LA +0) + Giant sub-typed race for invisibility at-will as an S-LA. I heard someone once use a Dancing Shield as a form of cover to hide behind. Also, max Bluff to 'create a diversion'. Warlock's Wall of Gloom blocks LoS, Walk Unseen invocation is useful and I'm rambling. |
| #11archerpwrJan 08, 2009 20:28:54 | http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/armor.htm#shieldTower http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/combatModifiers.htm#cover Granted, that's with a minimum of a -7 penalty (mithral tower shield), but you take cover behind the tower shield, use the hide skill, and hide yourself (including all of your equipment, which the tower shield happens to be). Show No, I'm not serious. The rules do work that way though. |
| #12surrealJan 08, 2009 20:47:55 | Try my "lists of stuff" (link in sig) and look up the HiPS section. |
| #13NiteCyperJan 09, 2009 21:34:59 | The Shadow Template in Tome of Magic does it for +1 LA along w/ a bunch of other decent abilities. Verily, I was surprised when you said it was '+1'. I wanted to believe it. I checked, both in LoM and MotP, and found them to be LA +1. Oh well. The Incarnate Contruct template's negative level adjustment still does it. Edit: Incarnate Construct is a level 9 Transmutation spell with a 5k XP cost and the special requirement of a humanoid heart that has been taken from a corpse less than 8 hours dead. Backstory, minor creation?, flesh to salt, or just keep it out of the game. |
