Just curious what your favorite method is. I'll start Greater mirror image Swift action for 89% miss chance. |

Any mirror image is ftw. My current favorite though is abrupt jaunt :D So sorry Mr. Frenzied Misszerker! |

You don't cast mage armor in combat, you cast it waaaay before combat starts. That said, my favourite is: Dont be where the attacker is. Mobility and Meat Shields. |
| #4feloniouselaNov 16, 2008 19:32:38 | Nothing messes up encounters like the Fly spell. You're immune to pretty much any non-flying beastie. If things don't have good ranged attacks....forget it. That rules out quite a few encounters until wayyyyy later in the game. |

| #7tana_sanNov 16, 2008 21:11:18 | Killing or disabling the threat(s) before it can do anything to me. +1 :D @Kell_Kheraptis: You can't use earth glide through Alter Self. You acquire the physical qualities of the new form while retaining your own mind. Physical qualities include natural size, mundane movement capabilities (such as burrowing, climbing, walking, swimming, and flight with wings, to a maximum speed of 120 feet for flying or 60 feet for nonflying movement), natural armor bonus, natural weapons (such as claws, bite, and so on), racial skill bonuses, racial bonus feats, and any gross physical qualities (presence or absence of wings, number of extremities, and so forth). A body with extra limbs does not allow you to make more attacks (or more advantageous two-weapon attacks) than normal. Burrowing, on the other hand, can be used. |
| #8kell_kheraptisNov 16, 2008 21:17:48 | In a similar vein, alter self into something with earth glide or somesuch has a similar effect. Emphasis mine :D I leave these moderately open-ended for a reason, after all. One of my other favorites is Foresight, for obvious reasons. |
| #9tana_sanNov 16, 2008 21:28:34 | Emphasis mine :D I leave these moderately open-ended for a reason, after all. One should always cover one’s arse and you, sir, have done just that. ![]() |
| #10kell_kheraptisNov 16, 2008 21:50:34 | One should always cover one’s arse and you, sir, have done just that. and if nothing else, that's what the contingency is for! About to get squished by something nasty and melee? *pouf* Contingent Dimension Door! Getting low on hp? Good thing you've got a Contingent Ottiluke's Telekinetic Sphere! Arcane Disciple with this trick can make you bloody near invincible >.> |
| #11PauperNov 17, 2008 1:58:30 |
Keep in mind that you'll need Craft Contingent Spell to do this sort of complete coverage of possibilities -- you can only have one contingency spell active at any given time. The best method of defense, though, goes right along with Rasmus Wagner -- if you're never attacked, you can't take damage. Buffing allies to make them dangerous helps, as does spells like mirror image and greater invisibility. -- Pauper |
| #12reisNov 17, 2008 6:38:16 | superior invisibility ironguard spell turning |
| #13ashylNov 17, 2008 10:14:37 | I agree with what most ppl say - the best defence is not even being there at all. Levitate and fly do the job perfectly ^^ . This applies to computer games too, running and casting. |
| #14BloodDragonNov 17, 2008 10:53:43 | Celerity and Greater Celerity are my personal favourites... Defence and attack all in one. |
| #15tshernNov 17, 2008 11:29:42 | My signature, or the link in it, has a decent compilation of stuff for your purposes. |
| #16theantitrollNov 17, 2008 11:34:45 | One of my players have pointed out an interesting possibility. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/illusoryScript.htm Now, consider the following: ![]() See where this is going yet? |
| #17bruceleeroyNov 17, 2008 13:24:51 | With the suggestion being: Take off your clothes and go streak the quad? |
| #18pithicaNov 17, 2008 14:01:49 | As someone else mentioned, you don't cast mage armor (or any hr/lvl or greater) spell round one of combat. You cast them when you mem spells or shortly thereafter and you have them up all day, if you're going to use them. My favorite Spell Combos... Heart of X (*4)- Immune to Crits/Precision damage (+ a bunch of other stuff) Superior Invis + Obscuring Mist-Can't be seen at all, ever, (well, until they gust of wind the mist away, but even then they need true seeing) Energy Immunity (*2)-Immune to 4 Energy types with Extend Rod Ghost Form + IronGuard-no, you really did miss Mindblank-well, duh Righteous Might (Evil version) + Shapechange into Angel - DR 15/- effectively Globe of Invuln + Spell Turning-I say you can't dispel me, and I mean it |
| #19theantitrollNov 17, 2008 14:07:18 | I was thinking more like "Don't hurt me!" which is a reasonable suggestion that means you never get attacked. Well, it might not be reasonable if you're attacking them, but then they should be crowd controlled or save or died or whatever. |
