Human with Feathered Wings

When designing a new character for some future unknown dungeon, I had the inspiration to want to run a celestial... However my memory of the celestial fell short of what the template provides- so I turned my attention to the half-celestial. This by-far met my expectations with a LOT of extra fluff I wouldn't go out of my way to get, but was grateful about. Then I hit the LA and saw the 4 and wept, deeply. Then I realized of all the stuff I was looking at, the only thing I wanted was this: wings.

Wings are just cool, and I just want a simple fighter who packs wings. I don't want to run a raptorian, though I know they somehow manage to pick up slowly progressing flight without a L.A. but something about the raptorian rubs me the wrong way, and I don't know where my mystery future DM will draw the line on the "Races" books. My simple question is:

Without a build dedicated to it or 20,000 GP (wings of flying), how can I pick up some functional feathered wings while being a good old fashioned human fighter? I'll take an L.A. for a template or suggestions of other humanoid creature with wings, but really I'm aiming for a human fighter with wings, and minimal to no L.A.

Any ideas?

Dragonborn of Bahamut from Race of Dragon can select Wings aspect and are pretty cool overall

There is a Winged Creature template in Savage Species for a +2 LA, I believe. Might be worth your while to take a look at it.

There's also the Aasimar/Tiefling with the feats Celestial/Fiendish Bloodline and Outsider Wings (Races Of Faerun).

SRD has wings of flying listed as 54,000 gp. 20k only if someone crafts them, right?

Well, there is a Favoured Soul who gets them around Level 15(?). You could also make a case for modifying the Draconic Wings Feat from Races of the Dragon to apply to Tieflings/Aasimar with Bat/Feathered Wings(basically rework the fluff and a little crunch vis a vis the pre-reqs).

Here's an old list. Doubtless, there has to have been at least 1 or 2 new ways since then.

Play a silver brow human (or a plain human and use your bonus feat on that feat from Dragon Magic that makes you dragonblooded) and take the Dragon Wings feat at level 1 and the Improved Dragon Wings feat at level 6. It's still slow progress to full flight though.

This. Also, just pretend they are feathered instead of dragon wings. It is just a flavor change anyway.

I'd suggest the Winged Creature Template from SS as mentioned above. It gives you some basic attribute bonuses, and a speed boost while flying, without any special flight restrictions like a lot of the other ways to get wings. Also, your Maneuverability is based off of your Dex. If you go with a high Dex character, you'd end up with Perfect, and thats got its own benefits.

The +2 LA would hurt some builds, but you want wings, and its a pretty good way of getting them. Also, it changes your type to Monstrous Humanoid, making you immune to the "X Person" spells, like Hold and Charm.

Winged Creature from SS, as mentioned, gets them (obviously). +2 LA (it does have other benefits too).

Rainbow Servant gives you feathery rainbow wings for a few rounds a day. Talk to your DM about having it be 10/10 casting instead of 6/10 if you want it ... but its only a few rounds a day. Not really what you want, I think.

Enlightened Spirit prc (CMage) gets the celestial flight invocation - you can have"shimmering spirit wings" 24/7 - sounds pretty angelic to me.

Otherwise the items suggested are good ones.

Rainbow Servant is 10/10. This has been confirmed in the latest copy of Complete Divine (Portuguese version, I believe).

The winged template, gives perfect meneuverability if dex is 17+. It also gives +4 dex.

Except that every other version to date is 6/10, including random other printings in other languages.

Its debatable, and its something you should talk to your DM about - but its probably irrelevant here. I just brought it up because you do get feathered wings for x minutes a day with it.

No. It clearly states in the TEXT right from the very first print that it is 10/10. Since text trumps tables, it was never meant to be 6/10. Sounds like some French fellow went the way of the "OMFG-suxxor borken!!!!!" and made a 'correction' of his own. That is the only way I can think of as to why the text changed from 10/10 to 6/10 back to 10/10...

Even though they may not look right flavour-wise:
Half-fey template (Fiend Folio) gives wings. They are "Butterfly wings". So they will look really strange. But they work. And the template rocks in every possible aspect, for only +2 LA. You could probably get around the "Butterfly" property of the wings if you bribe your DM a little.

Also, if you want to be a pure fighter and not a caster, consider a Tauric template with a Pegasus or similar large flying creature. You'll get RHD, but those are not so bad compared to LA, and also you'll get full BAB, which does not count towards your BAB 20 limit until epic.

And of course, NOTHING beats the Pixie Barbarian.

Tauric's in Monster manual II and Savage species.

Basically it's a balanced form of permanent polymorph: You get physical stats of a creature, but you have to take racial HD to make up for it. I forgot whether there is LA, too. I only know it because a friend of mine played a Tauric/Pegasus archer which was very cool. One possible issue will be how to assign the point-buy, since you're not getting physical stats at all - they all come from the template.

I also think that a centaur, especially with a winged creature, has a certain amount of coolness - with the possible exception of reproduction... I strongly suggest polymorph before sex.

Lesser Aasimar (Player's Guide to Faerun) has a +0 LA. The feats Celestial Bloodline + Outsider Wings (Races of Faerun) get you feathered wings with a fly speed equal to your land speed (average maneuverability). Celestial Bloodline requires +1 in all saves, Outsider Wings requires +2 in all saves. Improved Flight can knock that up to good maneuverability, and Air Heritage (Planar Handbook) can increase your flight speed by 30ft.

Of course, a Lesser Aasimar isn't a human, but humanoid (planetouched) is pretty close!

Edit: Sorry, I missed BadCatMan's earlier mention of the feats!

Hathran Winged Mask. Gaseous Form? Scorn Earth class feature (Elocater?).

Corresponding Warlock Invocation and Hat of Disguise or something.

maybe even lesser aasimar with them?

WAY too many feats.... Nothing but a pure fighter for quite a few levels will be able to cope.

I looked in Savage Species, and flight is a +1 LA for less than good maneuverability and +2 for good or better, and I'd rather have the latter. The half-fey is pretty powerful, but not what I'm looking for flavor-wise, and methinks I'd like to buy off the LA using unearthed arcana, and with a leveling SLA like what the Half-Fey is packing, I don't think I could really justify it. It looks like the feathered creature template is the way to roll for me- Thanks to everyone who contributed and if you can think of more, I'd be happy to hear about them. One more quick questions instead of creating a whole new thread...

Does flyby attack work like spring attack and ride-by attack in that it negates the AoP, or is it just that you can move before and after but you're in AoP town when you do use it to charge? It looked like ride-by attack for flying creatures, but never really mentioned the AoP since a charge usually doesn't invoke an AoP from the person you're attacking, but this doesn't seem to say this way or that. Anyone have a solid answer? and of course, anymore suggestions for flight, if possible.

Flyby attack does not negate the attack of opportunity. In general, if a feat/ability does not specifically say it negates or avoids something, it doesn't.

I thought the Book of Exalted deeds reset the half-celestial to +2? Probably easiest, if you can do level buyoff.

Unseelie fey from dragon 304 or the dragon compendium. It is a +0 LA template that has a 50% change of getting rings. Bribe your DM and all is good.

Well played Bergtann... Though double checking errata seems to say "There's too many mistakes like this to list them all, so just know that core book it references is right" which means the +4 would remain supreme...

Unseelie Fey... noted... I think I have a friend who has a lot of dragon magazines... I'll see if he has the one it's in...

The key is using a reach weapon - although that will only work as long as you're fighting little guys.
