I can make any 1st or 2nd level permanent...what to choose?

As a quest reward, our DM is allowing us to choose a 1st or 2nd level spell to either make permanent (ignoring the normal permanency rules) or to be useable a limited amount of times per day. The frequency of use depends on spell power. For example, Protection from Evil would be permanent but Wraithstrike would have limited uses per day.

I'm playing a tank build (Warforged into MoMF via wildshape Ranger.) Given that I can have access to ANY arcane or divine 1st or 2nd level spell, what would be helpful?

Lesser Vigor, Beastland Ferocity or Blood Wind.

Does that allow to keep fighting at less than -10, or just less than 0?

Assuming you don't die from it, yes. So with Delay Death, you don't really care about damage.

"Protection from Evil would be permanent but Wraithstrike would have limited uses per day."

Elaborate?

In any case, try expeditious retreat/swift haste

Meaning that the GM is going to gage the power of the spell, and use that to determine how often (from once per day on through to constant) that the spell is accessed. He feels that Protection from Evil as a constant isn't unbalancing, but Wraithstrike would be.

Heroics with limited uses per day = changeable feats

You need to give more info.
books allowed
will it be sla , sp , ex
will it stack if you use each round
will you have to pay material cost if it has one for each casting
stat your full build
is your build set in stone or changeable
stat your team mates
do you get bonus exp for making the dm cry

You will get better responses and suggestions to optimize this.

Very first thing i thought of was "be sure to chcek out classes that grant high level spells in lower slots." Classes such as Trapsmith, Assassin, Demonologist (Bestow Curse!), Adept, or similiar as well as spells from Domains.

Top of my list:
Haste Trapsmith 2
Mirror Image
It is Swift Fly Duskblade 2 ...
Heroics/Alterself

Duskblade is swift fly which is a wizard/sorcerer 2
other than that great suggestions.
oh and haste is 1st level trapsmith

If you're a melee brute, I think Protection from Evil would actually be pretty good, for its secondary effect of blocking possession attempts and charm/compulsion.

If you end up picking from other spell lists:

Greater Invisibility / Telflammar Shadowlord 2
Magic Circle against Evil / Demonologist 2

Since you're already wildshaping, I don't recommend alter self.

Since you'll be wildshaping, Scintillating Scales would probably be very useful. Nothing like a +16 deflection bonus to help out your touch AC.

I would just go for a permanent Protection from Evil - blocking all mind control and a small bonus to AC and saves against most foes is pretty sweet for a 1st level spell slot, and it won't upset the DM either.

Warforged Tank?

See if Repair Light Damage would be uses per day or at will.

Why don“t Repair Moderate Damage?

Protection from evil is a very solid choice.

A few others I'd consider:

Shield: since you probably won't have a shield bonus
Silent Image: it's uses are endless
Grease- always a solid spell for a creative player
Benign transpositation-Another always useful spell
Fog Cloud- messes up ranged attacks among other things
Ray of stupidity: an encounter ender but will probably be in the same boat as wraithstrike
Nerveskelter- more initative is always a good thing

All very good suggestions, thank you.

In the same vein--I may end up playing another character, a Dragonwrought Kobold Druid/Sorcerer/Arcane Hierophant that uses Alter Self to turn into a dragon, channels spells into Draconic Breath, and is heading for the Dragon Wildshape feat at level 12.

What (quasi)permanent 1st or 2nd level spell would be best for this kind of spell-using, flying skirmisher?

PS Please keep the suggestions for the Warforged spell coming if you have them.
