So I am a fighter2/rogue4 using a spiked chain to trip and make sneak attacks.

It is core only.

But if I could add just one extra Prc or book, which would you choose?

You know, for some reason, I recall that opponents who were prone still couldn't be sneak-attacked.

Do you know about the Scout and Daring Outlaw feat? Those might be better options than Fighter levels. To get your opponent prone, play-test using marbles. Go to the Funny Quotes thread in my sig and search 'marbles' inside the 'stealth handmanual WIP' sblock and check out the thread.

Either MIC or Tome of Battle. MIC has lots of tasty items. Tome of Battle lets you ditch out of your core levels and go with either Warblade or Swordsage, and has a TON of crunch that helps melee fighter types kicko el bootay, as they say on the moon.

I think you mean Swift Hunter and Ranger+Scout, but that takes 3 books (Core+CAdv+CS).

I'd go with the PHBII (Especially for Robilar's Gambit).
