| #1bill_bisco_average_adventurerAug 29, 2008 0:26:39 | Hey everybody how are you? ![]() After playing 4th edition for awhile, now I'm playing my friend's 3.5 game and I'm having a blast! Here's the Scoop: I'm a Human Wizard 5/ Mindbender 1/Spelldancer 1 Books: All 3.5 generally - Ebberon Stats Str:14 Dex:17 Con:19(17 base) Int: 20(18 base) Wis:12 Cha:12 Spells per day Level: Amount 0:4 1:5 2:4 3:3 4:2 Feats: Combat Casting Dodge Endurance Mobility Extend Spell (no familiar) Persistent Spell Basically every day I get up and cast 3 Extended Persistant spells which last 48 hours and the next day I cast 3 different Extended Persistent spells which last 48 hours. As a Result I net 6 Persisted Spells a day. So, here's what I have generally prepared in the past 0: Create water, Light x2, Stick 1: Shield, Mage Armor, Obscuring Mist, Disguise Self, Comprehend Languages 2: Alter Self, (Fly,Swift), See Invisibility, Scintillating Scales 3: Nondetection, Leomud's tiny hut, Dragon Breath 4: Greater Invisibility, Polymorph Alright, so my planned spells to Persist are 1: Shield 2: Alter Self, (Fly,Swift), Scintillating Scales 3: Dragon Breath 4: Greater Invisibility However, it seems to me that these might not be the best choices Generally, I've been flying around invisibly using a 4d6 acid breath weapon from Dragon Breath. If the battle gets heated, I'll polymorph into a Physthic (3.5 Psionics Handbook) and melee my enemies while still invisible. So, this seems unoptimal. Outside of my generally prepared spells list, I have 2 additional 1st level spells, and 1 additional 3rd level spell. If I get access to buying more spells, what should I do? I'm basically looking for any good suggestions of how to own as a Wizard at this level and a little higher. I've never really gotten to play a wizard before and being an invisible flying spellslinger is so much fun! :D |
| #2arcane-surgeAug 29, 2008 1:03:18 | I don't know that being invisible all the time would be that fun. Tactically, it's great, but I'd imagine that it's pretty hard to buy a horse or pick up a barmaid when no one can see you. |
| #3mdsummerAug 29, 2008 2:37:55 | I'm playing a level 9 wizard (Wiz 5 Incantatar 4) now so my rough experiences as below: Nerveskitter to try and act first in pivotal combats. Picking up Evard's Black Tentacles is ownage... love that spell. Even warrior classes have problems getting out of the Tentacles. Lvl 3 slot? Dispell Magic? It seems your DM is letting you with a lot of power at hand... |

As a summary, what you should be doing is: buffing (Enlarge Person, Haste), debuffing (Unluck, Slow), or battlefield control (Glitterdust, Evard's Black Tentacles). out of those, battlefield control is usually the most critically effective. |

Who are the other members of your party? Rogues probably would appreciate Grease, melee fighters appreciate haste, Glitterdust is all-around handy, etc. |

1. I grabbed Nondetection because I am afraid of my DM getting annoyed by the power of my character and him deciding to use NPC spells to find my character and annoy him. But you make a decent point, I probably should not be worrying about nondetection too much and I should replace it with something else, but is there a superior 3rd level spell over glitterdust? 2. I'll keep that in mind for Comprehend languages. You make a good point. I am unused to spending gold, but that would probably be superior as to me waiting every adventure for a situation that would justify it being in that slot. 3. My goodness, cloaker looks like so much fun thank you! I'm going to plan on trying that later perhaps 4. Invisibility is Personal or Touched, Greater Invisibility is "You" or Touched. I simply assume that "You" and Personal are the same thing The other members of my party are: Cleric 1/Dread Necro 1/ Human Paragon 3/ Chameleon 2 (spell-focused) Fighter/Something melee Ranger Cleric *and possibly up to 2 more people You make another good point. If we can get some party cohesion, haste would probably help all the people here. Does grease help in a way that I am not seeing? How does it advantage Rogues other than a bonus to hit an opponent if they fell prone? Dispel magic seems like a good choice. Would it be a waste to prepare it if my purpose was to countespell with it? Enlarge person seems less useful to me because it affects only one person and lasts only a minute per level, and glitterdust seems better, or am I misjudging? |
| #7hogarthAug 29, 2008 9:44:00 | But you make a decent point, I probably should not be worrying about nondetection too much and I should replace it with something else, but is there a superior 3rd level spell over glitterdust? Haste, Slow, Stinking Cloud -- those are all decent 3rd level spells. I'll keep that in mind for Comprehend languages. You make a good point. I am unused to spending gold, but that would probably be superior as to me waiting every adventure for a situation that would justify it being in that slot. 12.5 gold should be a pittance at level 7. Does grease help in a way that I am not seeing? How does it advantage Rogues other than a bonus to hit an opponent if they fell prone? If you have to make Balance checks and you don't have 5 ranks in Balance, you lose your Dex bonus. So Grease makes it easier to sneak attack. |
| #8carnivoreAug 29, 2008 11:48:00 | another useful idea... get the right Equipment.... here are some examples: http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14547448&postcount=1319 http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14856903&postcount=2876 look at the Equipment lists ..... adjust to fit your character... these are designed to Solo Adventure ... but will function well with parties :D |
| #9emyAug 29, 2008 12:35:05 | Just how are you planning on casting 3 Persistent Spell'd buffs in one day? Ignoring this bit? Spelldancing takes 1 round per metamagic spell level adjustment. After Con modifier + spelldancer class level round, you have to start making Fort saves or take temporary Con damage. In your case, this is after 5 rounds. Persistent Spell is a +6 metamagic, so you can cast most of a Persistent buff before you have to make a DC 15 Fort save. For two more Persistent Spell spelldances you'd need to make 12 more Fortitude saves at increasing DC. Yeah. No. If you're doing Persistent + Extend as described in the OP, it would take a total of 16 Fortitude saves starting at DC 15 and ending at DC 30. (at least, as I interpreted it. I could be wrong. it could be DC 16 to DC 31) edit: unless you have some way of ignoring con damage + fatigue. that would be pretty rad. Is it just me or would a Necropolitan Wizard/Sorcerer/Cleric/whatever be utterly silly for Persistent buffs with Spelldancer 1? |
| #10osedoxAug 30, 2008 20:32:11 | Where is spell dancer located? |
| #11emyAug 30, 2008 23:21:00 | It's from Magic of Faerûn. |
