| #1leeginMay 15, 2009 2:10:33 | I'm new to 3.5. What are good feats for damage using a great warhammer and if you are a 10th level human, fighter? Str19/Dex19/Con14/Int12/Wis10/Cha11. I want to keep the character as a straight fighter and using a great warhammer. Thanks. |
| #2sofawallMay 15, 2009 7:30:31 | Well, first off, is there any possibility of changing the 19 in dex to a 19 in con? Also, Power Attack. |
| #3cruMay 15, 2009 7:33:19 | A twohanded hammer, probably the greathammer. Requires exotic weapon proficiency. |
| #4risnerMay 15, 2009 8:06:13 | Also, Power Attack. Either sucks or rocks. It's situational. If he goes against same CR (as his ECL) monsters with "normal" AC, then Power Attack will not add more than 5% to him. For raw mechanics, Weapon Focus, Greater Weapon Focus, Weapon Spec, Greater Weapon Spec, and Melee Weapon Mastery is what he wants. |
| #5leeginMay 15, 2009 9:37:25 | This is a character that is being converted from 2nd edition to 3rd, so I can rearrange the con with another attribute. I can also use a character flaw for an additional feat. I would like to increase the damage with the two handed hammer, along with anything that also makes it a functional build. |
| #6BalthanonMay 15, 2009 11:31:26 | If you want to focus on a single weapon, you will want to take a look at modifying your weapon to bypass damage reduction or carry multiple hammers (adamantine, cold iron, silver). At 10th level, I wouldn't go higher than a +2 weapon at most, anything more would take up too much of your wealth so multiple hammers is probably a better bet. You'll also want a +2 Str item, +2 Con item, and a ranged weapon of some kind-- probably a longbow. Adding in Strongarm Bracers from the Magic Item compendium should push your base damage on the hammer to 3d6 and the longbow to 2d6. If you switch your Dex and Con, I would pick up plate mail for armor and I would switch your bonuses from leveling up to one stat-- probably Str, so you get an extra point on your ability modifer. You may want to look at the Shock Trooper feat from Complete Warrior and the Dungeon Crasher variants in Dungeonscape for your fighter as well. |
| #7phoenix00May 15, 2009 11:35:08 | Leadership and grab a wizard cohort. May I introduce you to the joy of Greater Mighty Wallop. Greater Mighty Wallop is a spell that boosts a weapons damage as if it goes up by caster level/4 size categories for caster level*hours. Only works on bludgeoning weapons. A Warhammer for a medium size creature does 1d8 damage (average 4.5), boost it 2 size increase up and it does 3d6 damage (average 10.5). When the cohort has a caster level of 12, he can boost the weapon 3 size increases which is 4d6 (average 14). ----- Here is a sample wizard 8 (I am not optimizing him with things such as prestige classes and such for he is meant to be a cohort, he is not meant to be the roXor wizard. If you can do prestige classes make him a war weaver.) Human Wizard 8, Focused Conjurer, Martial Wizard Variant, Gives up Evocation, Enchantment, and Necromancy Feats 1 Cloudy Conjuration 1 Human, Extend Spell (will use later, need it for sculpt spell) 3 Metamagic School Focus Conjuration 5 Wizard, Sculpt Spell 6 Summon Elemental Sub out Scribe Scroll for Improved Initiative. Yes Scribe Scroll is awesome, but I am trying to keep the book keeping to a minimum. The whole point of the cohort is to make the fighter look good. This is why I am focusing on buffing spells and battlefield control spells give the fighter more time to smash the enemies. Substitution options (sub out the familiar for Abrupt Jaunt, keeps your ally alive thus making your life simpler, teleport if he is in harms way.) Spells 1st level
2nd level
3rd level
4th level
Bonus spells (now I am keeping this in another section for I have no clue how you choose the scores for your cohort, roll, elite array, what magic items you secure for your cohort etc. If you use the elite array you will have 15 int to start off, place level 4 and level 8 stat boosts in int and you will have 17 int enough for an additional 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level slot.) 1st * Silent Image (general utility) 2nd * Invisibility 3rd * Greater Magic Weapon Note a transmutation focused specialist will be a better buffer but then you have to worry about him staying alive for you don't have the awesomeness that is abrupt jaunt. When playing a cohort I like to give them an o **** button for I am thinking as my main character and sometimes I don't plan out the battle well enough thinking about protecting my cohort's hide. You will want a rod of extend to make those 8 hour Greater Mighty Wallop, and Greater Magic Weapon buffs last 16 hours. |
| #8phoenix00May 15, 2009 11:45:53 | I say go exotic weapon profiency goliath greathammer. Goliath Greathammer does 1d12 (average 6.5) as the base damage instead of 1d8 (average 4.5). With Strongarm bracers you can wield a large greathammer just like it was a medium with no penalty. Thus the damage is 3d6 (average 10.5) Throw in Greater Mighty Wallop for the two effective size increases and your large greathammer is doing damage of 6d6 (average 21.) So with 2 feats (leadership and exotic weapon profiency) and 3000 gp, you are averaging an increase of average damage of 15.5. (This is assuming your cohort only casts greater mighty wallop on you and not the other buffing spells such as haste, expansion, greater magic weapon etc.) Now try to find me a two feat combo that is anything close to that in damage. Really puts the shame of weapon focus and weapon specialization. A mere +1 to attack and +2 to damage. |
| #9phaedrusxyMay 15, 2009 11:50:32 | Isn't the goliath greathammer already large, since goliaths can naturally use large weapons thanks to their powerful build ability? And I'm surprized noone has mentioned Shock Trooper yet. I'd suggest that and the Dungeoncrasher ACF from Dungeonscape to charge into people and slam them around like bowling pins. Edit: Check out the Fighter's Handbook, also. |
| #10jameswilliamogleMay 15, 2009 11:53:04 | Using the following sources... PHB, PHB2, Complete Champion, Complete Warrior... Barbarian 2 / Fighter 8 1 Power Attack, Lion Totem Barbarian (alternate class feature) 3,b Leap Attack, Improved Bull Rush 5b Weapon Focus 6 Shocktrooper 7b Weapon Specialization 9,b Weapon Mastery, Crushing Blow (not entirely sure if you qualify for these two at this level; check BAB requirements) Net result: Get a full attack when you charge, getting 3:1 return for Power Attack if you jump 10', get a cumulative bonus to hit every time you hit, and Power Attack penalties apply to your AC instead of attack roll. Also mondo-bonuses when using hammers. |
| #11BalthanonMay 15, 2009 12:04:48 | Isn't the goliath greathammer already large, since goliaths can naturally use large weapons thanks to their powerful build ability? I suggested both a little earlier. ![]() For the weapon, going off of his "great warhammer" I was assuming his DM had put something together for him like a 2d6, 2-handed warhammer. I'm fairly sure Phoenix00 is right on the 3d6 damage for a Large greathammer, though I don't have my books to check. |
| #12phaedrusxyMay 15, 2009 12:10:52 | I suggested both a little earlier. Doh! :embarrass |
| #13leeginMay 15, 2009 12:14:38 | The hammer my character has can change compositions while still retaining its hardness. I can change it to anything within reason, from wood, to glass, etc... Getting past DR should not be to hard. The hammer my character has does 2d6 base. Greater Mighty Wallop is good, but I cannot count on that being cast. I see that there is a lot of damage that can be done by using a "charge" type feat, but what about once you are into combat and face to face with an opponent? Is there a good solid way to get some additional damage? Also, isn't there a way to get 1&1/2 times your strength bonus from weilding a weapon with both hands? |
| #14cruMay 15, 2009 12:14:38 | now that we start mentioning dips, why don't we just drop the fighter idea altogether. swap dex with wis, melee cleric ftw. metal domain for proficiency; and there's somewhere this free +2 damage with hammers (uhm, dwarves only, duh) |
| #15phoenix00May 15, 2009 12:21:55 | Isn't the goliath greathammer already large, since goliaths can naturally use large weapons thanks to their powerful build ability? Goliath Greathammer is 1d10 for small, 1d12 for medium, 3d6 for large. Goliath Greathammer can be used by any creature. If you are goliath and you take the ewp feat to qualify, due to the powerful build you can use the 3d6 version with no penalty. Of course the strongarm bracers allow you to use the 3d6 version with no penalty as well. |
| #16phoenix00May 15, 2009 12:25:48 | Greater Mighty Wallop is good, but I cannot count on that being cast. You can count on it being cast if you have a wizard cohort, which due to the feat leadership you can get for free. You did ask for feats to improve your damage, nothing does damage like a little buffer ;) Now your DM has to approve leadership, if he says no then no harm is done, you have nothing to lose for merely asking :P |
| #17leeginMay 15, 2009 12:26:05 | I am trying to avoid the dips with this character. With all the feats he gets and the bonus feats from character flaws, that should be enough for him to deal some pretty decent damage??? |
| #18dr_rocktopusMay 15, 2009 12:26:39 | And I'm surprized noone has mentioned Shock Trooper yet. I'd suggest that and the Dungeoncrasher ACF from Dungeonscape to charge into people and slam them around like bowling pins. Failure to follow this advice will leave you staring up at me staring down at you while you sleep. :inlove: |
| #19phoenix00May 15, 2009 12:34:41 | I see that there is a lot of damage that can be done by using a "charge" type feat, but what about once you are into combat and face to face with an opponent? Is there a good solid way to get some additional damage? The goal of a charger is to drop an opponent in one attack action. If he drops an opponent in one attack the opponent can't counter attack. A charger has nothing to fear from one opponent, it is when he is facing multiple opponents that he fears. ------ This is another reason why I suggested a wizard cohort. Due to battlefield control, grease, web, solid fog etc the enemies movements are hindered. If they are hindered it is alot harder for the enemies to gang up on your charger instead of you facing them one at a time. In D&D 3.5 if you face an opponent one at a time You Win, if you face multiple opponents you can lose. Thus in D&D the strongest classes are ones who do "battlefield control", "focus on getting multiple actions," this allows them to knock out the enemy before the enemy has time to "effective" counter attack. The other strongest classes are ones who focus on buffing and increasing stats so that if they are surrounded there is little chance they will die. |
| #20phaedrusxyMay 15, 2009 12:35:23 | Also, isn't there a way to get 1&1/2 times your strength bonus from weilding a weapon with both hands? Yes. Follow the rules. ;) Wielding a Weapon Two-Handed |
| #21leeginMay 15, 2009 12:42:31 | I understand what you are saying about "buffs". I am trying to not make the character one diemsional and still do good damage from feats or feat combinations. It is easierer to build a TWF because a lot of the feats state TW, but a single weapon used with both hands is not as easy to build for someone new to 3.5. So, any help with dropping an opponent as quickly as possible would be appreciated. |
| #22jgumbyrxMay 15, 2009 13:25:41 | Well, if you're looking at "damage-over-time", that is, average damage over the long-term, Power-Crit + Improved Crit will get you about 20% increase in damage out-put (i've put together this crazy excel spread-sheet -- lets me know D.O.T. depending on a bunch of different variables). Keep in mind that the more "extra" damage you are able to apply (e.g., strength, power attack, weapon enhancement, etc.), the less of a factor the actual size of the weapon becomes (i.e., don't get suckered by feats, etc. that increase weapon size if you are going to have a bunch of extra damage to apply to each hit). |
| #23leeginMay 15, 2009 13:33:51 | Can you provide some OT examples? |
| #24jgumbyrxMay 15, 2009 14:32:46 | Can you provide some OT examples? well, my DOT analisis is heavily based on hit-probabilities (to include probabily to confirm a crit). for example, you have a two-handed weapon that does 1d12 20/x4 (a greathammer for a medium creature), with a 19 STR. this gives you the following: 6.5 average weapon damage +6 extra strength damage x4 damage on a confirmed critical Since you will swing your weapon 1000's of times over your career, my DOT determines average damage per swing. Let's say that you need an 11 or greater to hit (50%) -- this will also mean that you will confirm on 1/2 of your crit threats. 6.5+6=12.5 (average damage per non-crit hit); 12.5*4=50 (average crit damage) Since 5% of your swings will be crit threats, that means that 2.5% of your swings will be confirmed criticals. So, you simply multiply these 2 #'s by probablity to get DOT: 12.5*0.5 + 50*0.025 = 7.5 average damage per swing (not hit) Power Critical increases the crit confirmation roll by 20%; and Imp Crit doubles threat probability. Which means that with these 2 feats, 7% of your swings will be confirmed criticals (given the same 50% hit chance): 12.5*0.5 + 50*0.07 = 9.75 average damage per swing. Of course, feel free to monkey-around with different damage out-puts and probabilities to get a feel for it. Does that answer your question (if not, let me know, and I'll give you my other answer). In case someone may doubt my methodology, I believe my methodology to be valid to do the Law of Large #'s and the Central Limit Theorem. Let me know what you think. |
| #25jgumbyrxMay 15, 2009 14:48:09 | upon further analisis, I have found this: This is going to depend on your race, and how much extra damage you think you will be able to crank out. If you can get the larger weapon through race, do it. If it is a matter of taking Monkey Grip, don't. (this is concidered against the human bonus feat) |
| #26leeginMay 15, 2009 14:56:27 | That was great post! So, without using a feat other than weapon focus, the damage will be substantial because of the weapon choice and using two hands? I know what power critical does. So, the crit range is now a 12 or better? Does improved critical double the base of 16-20 or the total with all bonuses? |
| #27mathias1313May 15, 2009 15:04:35 | If you want straight fighter I would probably go something like this: Human -Weapon Focus(Great hammer) 1 - Fighter -Power Attack -(B)Brutal strike 2 - Fighter -Dungeoncrasher Variant 3 - Fighter -Imp Bull rush 4 - Fighter -(B)Weapon Spec (Great Hammer) 5 - Fighter 6 - Fighter -Shocktrooper -Dungeoncrasher variant 7 - Fighter 8 - Fighter -(B)Melee Weapon Mastery 9 - Fighter - 10 - Fighter -(B)greater weapon focus 11 - Fighter 12 - Fighter -Armor Specialization -(B)greater weapon Spec 13 - Fighter 14 - Fighter -(B)Crushing strike 15 - Fighter -Leap Attack 16 - Fighter -(B)Dodge 17 - Fighter 18 - Fighter -Mobility -(B)Weapon Supremacy 19 - Fighter 20 - Fighter -(B)Elusive target |
| #28phaedrusxyMay 15, 2009 15:06:05 | Wait... what? What weapon has a base threat range of 16-20? (Anwer: None) Improved Critical doubles the base threat range. I'm not sure what bonuses you're talking about. Power Critical adds a +4 to second roll to confirm the threat. It does not expand your threat range. |
| #29jseahMay 15, 2009 15:09:07 | Have you considered Weapon Master? From a Faerun source IIRC. - It adds +2 to crit range. Disciple of Dispater does something similar, but that requires cleric levels. |
| #30leeginMay 15, 2009 15:11:09 | matias1313 I am looking for a 10th level fighter that does well once combat has closed in. The "bull rush" style is fine if I can fit it in, but not exactly what I want. PhaedrusXY, my bad. What is the threat range once those two feats are added and is there a feat that improves threat range? What does "FLEET" do? |
| #31phaedrusxyMay 15, 2009 15:11:53 | Have you considered Weapon Master? From a Faerun source IIRC. Weapon Master was from Sword and Fist (and Oriental Adventures). Disciple of Dispater most certainly does not require cleric levels. You can enter it with Fighter 6. PhaedrusXY, my bad. What is the threat range once those two feats are added and is there a feat that improves threat range? The only feat that improves threat range is Improved Critical, and it just doubles the base threat range... You have to dip into prestige classes to expand the threat range further. The two jseah mentioned are the classic ones. |
| #32jameswilliamogleMay 15, 2009 15:12:44 | If you want straight fighter I would probably go something like this: Hey, that looks familiar! If you go this route, consider using the Morningstar so that you can stack - Shocktrooper's Headless Charge, Leap Attack, Dungeoncrasher x 2, Brutal Strike, Flay, and Driving Attack (ie, attack once, taking a -20 penalty on your power attack which affects your AC instead of attack bonus, doing +60 damage, leaving them prone and away from you in a cone-shaped area of your choosing, dealing another 6d6 damage, and forcing them to make two DC 30+ fort saves or be sickened for -2 on their d20 rolls with an additional -2 on their d20 rolls). |
| #33leeginMay 15, 2009 15:26:11 | Thanks. Is there a greater improved crit? No, I want to keep him straight fighter but I appreciate the suggestions. I also want to use a hammer and not be a bashing fighter using a morning star. His level is currently 10 and anything above that is not currently effective. |
| #34jgumbyrxMay 15, 2009 15:30:43 | Hey, that looks familiar! yes -- all very good. OP didn't really give any DM/campaign perameters, so I was trying to keep it simple -- just something easy that would be universaly accepted by dm's. Also, while there are plenty of melee damage builds floating around, the OP doesn't seem to be very familiar with 3.5 (some of the stuff can be complicated for someone not familiar with things -- concider point-of-reference when applying subjective terms such as "simple") |
| #35leeginMay 15, 2009 15:30:58 | I cannot find these two feats that were suggested - Weapon Mastery snd Crushing Blow. I see a crushing blow that requires a character of 20th level?? That could not be the same one. |
| #36jgumbyrxMay 15, 2009 15:34:13 | I cannot find these two feats that were suggested - Weapon Mastery snd Crushing Blow. I see a crushing blow that requires a character of 20th level?? That could not be the same one. PHB-2 |
| #37leeginMay 15, 2009 15:38:58 | I don't see them in phb-ii. I am looking in the 3.5 version. |
| #38jameswilliamogleMay 15, 2009 15:42:23 | yes -- all very good. Mine uses the same sourcebooks, except for Leap Attack in Complete Adventurer... For the OP: All the feats in the builds above are in Complete Adventurer, Complete Warrior, PHB, and PHB2, and Complete Adventurer is only 1 feat - Leap Attack, which is worth it, imo, for damage output. If you can get just these books allowed, you can make a decent Fighter. |
| #39phaedrusxyMay 15, 2009 15:46:30 | I don't see them in phb-ii. I am looking in the 3.5 version. I think he got the names messed up a bit... I see Crushing Strike and Weapon Supremacy in there. |
| #40leeginMay 15, 2009 15:55:14 | XY, wow! Those are a lot of prequisites. Do you have any other suggestions? I do not believe that I could pull those off at 20th level. James, no book is banned... yet. So, if you have some suggestions, please let me know. I will look up leap attack. Thanks for the help. |
| #41jgumbyrxMay 15, 2009 16:21:19 | I think he got the names messed up a bit... Or possibly meant Melee Weapon Mastery |
| #42danduMay 15, 2009 16:28:19 | If I had a hammer I'd hammer in the morning I'd hammer in the evening All over this land I'd hammer out danger I'd hammer out a warning I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters All over this land... Anyways, for your convenience, Leap Attack and Combat Brute |
| #43leeginMay 15, 2009 16:35:54 | I have read dungeon crasher a bunch of times. I am trying to keep this character as a straight fighter, but I suppose I should find out what dungeon crasher does to help me in melee combat? I do not have that book. Does anyone know what a dungeon crasher does? |
| #44leeginMay 15, 2009 16:48:24 | Is it true that keen wepon and improved critical do not stack? If so, I can leave off improved critical. |
| #45risnerMay 15, 2009 16:48:28 | Have you considered Weapon Master? From a Faerun source IIRC. Doesn't exist any more, but the new version "Exotic Weapon Master" might have the same ability in CWar p30. |
| #46jgumbyrxMay 15, 2009 17:07:25 | Doesn't exist any more, but the new version "Exotic Weapon Master" might have the same ability in CWar p30. AFAIC, EWM won't do anything to general damage out-put from a greathammer. the applicable abilities for that weapon would be: exotic sunder, exotic reach, show-off, and throw exotic weapon. As for "dungeon crasher" from Dungeonscape, pg 10: Level: 2nd. |
| #47phaedrusxyMay 15, 2009 17:08:00 | Doesn't exist any more, but the new version "Exotic Weapon Master" might have the same ability in CWar p30. Ugh... can we not start an argument over whether EWM replaces WM? They are so different that even if it was RAI, it is stupid. And even if it is RAW and RAI that it replaces the S&F version, OA was updated to 3.5 in Dragon 318 with no mention at all about EWM replacing the Kensai (OA Weapon Master). So the version from there should be kosher. |
| #48danduMay 15, 2009 17:11:52 | I have read dungeon crasher a bunch of times. I am trying to keep this character as a straight fighter, but I suppose I should find out what dungeon crasher does to help me in melee combat? Dungeon Crasher is an Alternate Class feature for Fighters that replaces the bonus feat at 2nd and at 6th level for the ability to damage people by Bullrushing them. |
| #49jgumbyrxMay 15, 2009 17:17:16 | Ugh... can we not start an argument over whether EWM replaces WM? They are so different that even if it was RAI, it is stupid. And even if it is RAW and RAI that it replaces the S&F version, OA was updated to 3.5 in Dragon 318 with no mention at all about EWM replacing the Kensai (OA Weapon Master). So the version from there should be kosher. just clarifying EWM features for risner -- he seemed unclear. |
| #50leeginMay 15, 2009 17:17:47 | I thought that the dungeon crasher would be a bull rush, which is not what I am looking for. I started this post and wated to increase melee damage with my characters two handed hammer (2d6 as my DM plays it). So far, I have improved my crit with power attack and improved critical, which I think has been replaced by a keen weapon. One feat so far and a lot of suggested dips. Are there any other feats a 10th level human fighter wielding a two handed hammer already in melee combat can use to increase damage? Leap attack was mention but I do not know what that does. I assume it is different than spring attack? I appreciate the input. |
| #51phaedrusxyMay 15, 2009 17:25:17 | The Combat Brute tactical feat (Complete Warrior) increases the multiplier on Power Attack on rounds after you've used PA for at least a -5 penalty. Leap Attack is another charge-based damage multipier feat. Charging is by far the easiest way to multiply your melee damage. You should not dismiss it. |
| #52leeginMay 15, 2009 17:28:53 | Thanks. I am not dismissing the charge or leap attack. I plan on using that and a berszerking ability, but those are easier to figure out than how to increase face to face damage, thus very few suggestions. Combat Brute sounds nice. I will look that up now. |
| #53leeginMay 15, 2009 17:34:18 | Combat Brute ROCKS!! That is what I am looking for. Nice suggestion. Does greater specialization stack with specialization? The bonus would be +4? |
| #54phaedrusxyMay 15, 2009 17:42:52 | Does greater specialization stack with specialization? The bonus would be +4? Greater Weapon Specialization [General] Reading comprehension FTW. ;) |
| #55jgumbyrxMay 15, 2009 17:46:38 | The Combat Brute tactical feat (Complete Warrior) increases the multiplier on Power Attack on rounds after you've used PA for at least a -5 penalty. Thank you XY. also, "keen" is only for piercing and slashing weapons; you'll need "impact" from Magic Items Compendium (it does the same thing -- just a formality) at 10th level, you have 10 feats (11 if you're human). so far, heres what we've given you, that you are eligable for right now (not all are optimal): power attack wpn focus wpn spec melee wpn mastery (bludgeoning) combat brute gr wpn focus (so that you can pick-up gr wpn spec) brutal strike pwr crit monkey grip plus all the charging feats That is nothing but feats. Now all you have to do is put them on a character sheet. Also, Crystal Keep has all the feats you can want, all on a single download. |
| #56leeginMay 15, 2009 17:47:09 | I did not have the text in front of me. |
| #57luthaisMay 15, 2009 18:10:40 | i do not know many effektive ways to improve your damage IN combat with a two handed weapon. the regular way would be some two weapon fighter, possibly going dervish (one of the stronges builds for fighter i know so far) ... but for a two handed weapon there is the power attacker ... perhabs you should attack, go away a few steeps and attack the next target. i kill per round should be pretty effektive. look at the builds suggested, read the handbooks etc. |
| #58leeginMay 15, 2009 18:17:37 | Thanks. power attack, melee wpn mastery (bludgeoning), combat brute and power crit were ones I did not know about. They should help a lot. I am aware of the charging feats. I have to look up brutal strike and monkey grip. I appreciate the time and input. |
| #59danduMay 15, 2009 18:22:24 | Do not look up Monkey Grip, for verily, tis made of fail. |
| #60jgumbyrxMay 15, 2009 19:56:46 | Do not look up Monkey Grip, for verily, tis made of fail. 'tis why I called it a "sucker" feat. |
| #61leeginMay 15, 2009 20:36:07 | So, with monkey grip and improved monkey grip or oversized two weapon fighting, a human fighter could use a bastard sword in each hand? Is that right? Or is it a bastard sword and long sword? |
| #62BalthanonMay 15, 2009 21:16:56 | So, with monkey grip and improved monkey grip or oversized two weapon fighting, a human fighter could use a bastard sword in each hand? Is that right? Or is it a bastard sword and long sword? No need for Monkey Grip-- Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting and Exotic Weapon Proficiency (bastard sword) will allow that. |
| #63leeginMay 15, 2009 21:28:48 | Thanks. |
| #64risnerMay 15, 2009 23:35:41 | Ugh... can we not start an argument over whether EWM replaces WM? There is no argument over it, It got replaced period. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20050110x You either use the newest version of the intentionally updated material or you don't. But don't spread FUD suggesting it wasn't updated. |
| #65jameswilliamogleMay 16, 2009 1:24:38 | Yargh... no more of that, pretty plz... OP isn't interested in anything but straight Fighter, anyways... :P My suggestion about Dungeoncrasher was particularly effective w/ Morningstars and Driving Strike (PHB2). Because Morningstars are both Piercing and Bludgeoning, you can stack all the feats specific to either on your attacks. It loses a lot of its effectiveness with Hammers. Ignore the TWF route. If you are building for damage, TWF is suboptimal in a straight Fighter build. The only time I recomend doing TWF is when a character is stuck with the core rulebooks only, and doesn't want to do the Spiked Chain Fighter (usually due to not meeting the prereqs of Combat Expertise), and then it still is just mediocre. Dwarf Fighters focusing on Hammers have potential. Your target weapon is a Dwarven Thrower, of course. At the end of the Fighter's Handbook 2007 I put up a few straight Fighter builds that are a bit unconventional, but you might be able to get ideas from it. Seriously consider some prestige Classes and/or other dips. |
| #66dr_rocktopusMay 16, 2009 2:18:06 | I hear the bees coming! So, is ToB allowed? I'm not suggesting a break from complete fighter, but there are a couple of fundamentally excellent feats in there. Dunno, the issue is that I hate hammers. Find them clumsy. Crit-threat with a hammer is likely not worth it, to be blunt. It's going to be hard to widen that up, and hard to confirm your crits. A mount of any kind does really nice things for a fighter, particularly if you get the mount with leadership and class advance that sucker. My favorite is a Giant Eagle, but if you're going to be underground a lot, the bulette is hilarious as a mount and you don't need leadership to get one. |
| #67leeginMay 16, 2009 2:36:06 | ToB is legal. What were you thinking? What is so important about leadership? PhaedrusXY, I was trying to send you a private message but I cannot get to your account. Can you send me a PM? I have something to ask you. =bG |
| #68jgumbyrxMay 16, 2009 3:23:44 | What is so important about leadership? Are you kidding? the feat is in phb; the description is in dmg. read it, and then let your imagination run wild. Look, I'm really not trying to be rude, but I think that the first paragraph of the FAQ thread says it best: Everyone is welcome here, but I would like to remind people that this is an ‘advanced’ board. What that means is everyone here is assumed to know the basic rules of DnD or the d20 game in question. Rule questions belong in other forums. PhaedrusXY gave you a link to all of the rules; and I gave you a link to actually download all of the feats as well as a bunch of other stuff (since it seems that you don't have ready access to this material). My sincere advice is to take what you've gotten so far, and do some of this research and work yourself (you really will be the better for it). Like I said, I am reeeealy not trying to be rude (and I'm sure someone will set me right if I'm wrong). |
| #69danduMay 16, 2009 3:41:13 | ToB is legal. What were you thinking? What is so important about leadership? Do research. Ask intelligent questions. |
| #70tytalusMay 16, 2009 4:48:11 | My sincere advice is to take what you've gotten so far, and do some of this research and work yourself (you really will be the better for it). Do research. Ask intelligent questions. Good points. Doing a little research before asking questions has even been pointed out before a few times. Many things are right there in the basic rules. Sadly, he seems to have a different view: No, it is not for me to look myself when I am new and do not know where to look, nor do I have many of the books. |
| #71jgumbyrxMay 16, 2009 5:13:29 | Good points. Doing a little research before asking questions has even been pointed out before a few times. Many things are right there in the basic rules. YOU'VE GOTTA BE FREAKING KIDDING ME!!! (and yes, i did go ahead and read that whole section of that thread) Dude, Leegin -- you're gonna find yourself without ANY help, real soon. You can't just show-up with the attitude that somebody is supposed to just build your character for you. You have been given EVERY resource that you could possibly need. How do you think that everybody here learned this stuff? They sure as snot didn't just wonder around having everybody else spoon-feeding them -- they actually did their own work. You should do the same. As a matter of fact, I'll go so far as to tell you this: Spend some time with just the "Core" material, at least until you have developed some level of operational competence. That means to actually play several characters of varying classes. Then you can start to branch-out. |
| #72leeginMay 16, 2009 5:58:07 | I have said thank youm great posts and that I appreciate people's time over and over again. I cannot see very well. I have to have a kidney and liver transplant and it is causing major problems with my eyes and anemia. I can enlarge the tect on my PC, which helps a loy. The liver problem causes confusion sometimes. There is not much I can do about it, Here is a partial list of my daily meds. I take 5 other subcutaneous ones while I am at dialysis, |
| #73jgumbyrxMay 16, 2009 6:28:28 | I have said thank youm great posts and that I appreciate people's time over and over again. Yes, you have been very polite; and it is very much appreciated -- thank you. That is not the issue. The issue is that this is not necessarily the right place to try to get somebody to teach you the system. Questions -- yes. Learning everything that there is to learn about the game -- NO. That clutter-ups the boards, and wastes people's time. The other issue is when you said "No, it is not for me to look myself when I am new and do not know where to look, nor do I have many of the books." That is a sure-fire way to never get any help ever again. You have made mention that you have other players that you play with -- USE THEM. This is NOT 1st edition -- THIS IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT SYSTEM -- when it comes to 3.5, you appear to be a beginner. One more time, I'm gonna give you 2 links to go to (ones that you have been given several times) -- it will then be your responsibility to do the work. This link is a collection of all the rules, etc.: http://www.d20srd.org/ This one is so you can download files -- lists of different things (races, feats, spells, classes, etc.): http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/index.php You really do need to learn the basics before you demand this forums' time and energy. I'm sorry about your health; however, (and I don't mean to seem callous), but I'm not sure how that changes anyone's responsibilities. |
| #74jameswilliamogleMay 16, 2009 7:02:44 | Actually, I don't mind his questions. If he's drugged up, that sentence may have been muddled up ("Its not for me..." = "I can't..." - I can see it easily). That said, perhaps it would be best for the OP to reread what he's about to post to make sure its exactly what he wants to say? There's a great thread for simple questions, though, and the OP probably should post the simple one-sentence questions there - http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=570753. 3.5 has a pretty steep learning curve for those unfamiliar w/ the system. |
| #75leeginMay 16, 2009 7:23:31 | I am at dialysis and pretty heavily medicated righ now. I want to apologize for anything I did. My bad. Thanks for all the help. |
| #76sofawallMay 16, 2009 7:27:14 | Well, the learning curve isn't that steep for someone completely new to tabletop RPGs, but someone trying to ransfer from 2e to 3.5 would find quite a difference, I'm sure. |
| #77mathias1313May 16, 2009 12:50:13 | If you don't like the idea of the Dungeoncrasher than forget it and take imp sunder and combat brute (cant beleive I forgot about that feat ).Either way, you do your big charge/bullrush to get into combat then, the rest of the feats in the build allow you to mow down anything in your way. All is good in the world again ![]() |
| #78leeginMay 16, 2009 12:54:52 | I ordered dungeonscape. I'll check the dungeoncrasher out. Isn't there an underground druid and neutral gray-guard paladin in that book? I'll try and find "imp sunder." Thanks for the help. |
| #79jgumbyrxMay 16, 2009 13:38:59 | Actually, I don't mind his questions. If he's drugged up, that sentence may have been muddled up ("Its not for me..." = "I can't..." - I can see it easily). That said, perhaps it would be best for the OP to reread what he's about to post to make sure its exactly what he wants to say? I certainly see your point, but "it is not for me to look myself" pretty much does it for me, given the context of the rest of that sentence ("... because i'm new and don't have the books") also, the validity of "I am new and do not know where to look, nor do I have many of the books" taken care of several times already (and in at least 4 different threads). What is the difference between reading it here, and reading it on SRD? the difference is that on SRD, he actually has to just point-and-click; here, he just asks (which involves carrying-on a conversation -- which seems like it would be more difficult and time consuming) |
| #80leeginMay 16, 2009 13:51:26 | I do look up the spells and feats on 4-different sites, but they are not always there. I tried to find "roll with it" on all 4 sites and had no luck. I'm not here to argue with anyone. I just assumed that if someone was suggesting a feat, that they probably know where it so I can read it. I have already said I was sorry. That is the best I casn do. I'm naturally curious and I like to ask questions. I spend all day reading and researching for my job, so I do not mind doing the work. I tend to ask a few more questions depending on what meds I have taken during that time of day. |
| #81jgumbyrxMay 16, 2009 14:03:11 | I do look up the spells and feats on 4-different sites, but they are not always there. I tried to find "roll with it" on all 4 sites and had no luck. that feat can be found on the wizards.com Feat Index. There, you have now have the link, again. That page will tell you the book and page. (i know -- the crystal keep download doesn't have stuff from savage species, psionics, or epic) Try this, go through to all of the links that you have been given, and save them to your "favorites" on your internet browser. Also, many of your questions amount to trying to learn the basics of the game -- your gaming group is a much more appropriate resource for that (you did say that you have a gaming group); if ALL of you are new to 3.5, then get together and learn it as a team exercise. This will involve lots and lots and lots and lots of reading -- which I know you are not doing, because your questions are coming way too fast for you to have done any significant research. I do look up the spells and feats on 4-different sites, but they are not always there You have plenty of material to run/play a game. Given your inexperience with the system, just use what you have -- you don't need every single word ever written in order to play a game (though you have been given the vast majority of it). Just concentrate on learning the material that you have been given. |
| #82EndarireMay 16, 2009 15:48:08 | If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning, the evening, and all the livelong day! Ahem. I advise Tome of Battle. The maneuvers rocketh. And if you're into 'Death From Above' hammerage, see the Hood and change Lance/Polearm to Frickin' Huge Hammer. |
| #83danduMay 16, 2009 17:16:19 | I have said thank youm great posts and that I appreciate people's time over and over again. Shouldn't you be doing things that do not involve Dungeons and Dragons at this point in your life? It seems you have more pressing issues at hand, If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning, the evening, and all the livelong day! The joke has been made already. |
| #84EndarireMay 16, 2009 17:22:14 | I'm just sayin' what I'd do. Maybe that's why dwarves are so martial-happy; they have hammers and wrote a song about hammerin' while hammered. |
| #85leeginMay 16, 2009 17:23:55 | WOW!! Now you are going to tell me what I should and should not be doing? I'm not going to explain what is involved in a double transplant but I have to do things to take my mind off of it. DnD is one of those things. |
| #86danduMay 16, 2009 17:34:49 | WOW!! Now you are going to tell me what I should and should not be doing? Ironically, by yelling at me for telling you what to do, you have told me what to do. I'm not going to explain what is involved in a double transplant but I have to do things to take my mind off of it. DnD is one of those things. If it helps. I just remember people about to undergo serious medical operations being very busy with other stuff. Also, posting online whilst under the influence of drugs is, in my experience, usually a bad thing. Naked photos have occasionally spread as a resulted of such behavior. |
| #87jameswilliamogleMay 16, 2009 20:40:50 | Leegin, you aren't really using the advice given you. You need to use the resources presented. It doesn't look like you are making any effort whatsoever. |
| #88risnerMay 17, 2009 11:19:35 | The Oriental Adventures Kensai (which is exactly the same as the S&F weapon master) was not updated by the EWM. It was updated in Dragon 318, just like everything else from that book. So please choke to death on your holy freakin' RAW. I like RAW, yes. Is it holy? I'm not so sure. The Kensai was updated in Complete Warrior. The Dragon 318 update didn't cover the Kensai. So the OA Weapon Master (Kensai) is now the Complete Warrior Kensai. |
| #89aelryinthMay 17, 2009 12:45:15 | I say go exotic weapon profiency goliath greathammer. Sure, I can do that easy. The two Feat Combo is Improved Unarmed Strike, and Superior Unarmed Strike. Then add Adaptive to the Greathammer. Use the Adaptive to Sub 'Greathammer' for Unarmed Strike. Both feats work off a base dmg of 1-4, but the base dmg of a Greathammer is 1-12. Ergo, Dmg goes up immediately to 3-18, then 4-24, and tops out at 6-36. Oh, but wait. We can make the Greathammer out of elemental Gold, and thus Heavy, taking an Exotic Weapon Prof. Dmg goes to 9-54. wear your Strongarm bracers. Dmg goes to 12-72. Get Enlarged. Dmg goes to 18-108. Wallop? Who needs Wallop? Make your DM cry. And the best thing is, if you lose the hammer, you still have a UA attack for 2-12 dmg at higher levels. You can take all the weapon spec feats for UA, and they all apply to your hammer. Your goal for your hammer would be +5, Adaptive, Shadowstriking, Throwing/Returning, possibly Valorous. ==Aelryinth |
