| #1vilettaAug 03, 2009 16:34:30 | Exactly what it says on the tin. I want a way to make my character immortal. The character in question is a level 6 human Archivist, and old. For the purposes of this thread, "immortal" means the prevention of natural death, stopping the aging process, though a way to effectively reverse the aging process would also be nice. Social acceptance is important; becoming undead is not an acceptable option. Being blatantly marked as a servant of a dark god is not acceptable. Politics are big in this game, and I need to make sure any big dark rituals that are required can be covered up afterward without branding my character. The DM is quite (and appropriately) wary of Archivist shenanigans. No arcane-to-divine tricks. No monster divine spells. No Adept. No Divine Bard. No Anyspell. Though I do have free reign of the divine base classes (sans Shugenja without extreme justification), and I'm allowed access to domains, but anything weird (like the slime domain) must be justified, so I can really only draw from those sparingly. So, any standard paths to immortality y'all'd suggest? |
| #2james_moriartyAug 03, 2009 16:42:43 | Just become an Elan |
| #3badgerx3Aug 03, 2009 17:05:36 | Nvm, didn't see the 'no undead' thing. Yeah, just go Elan |
| #4vilettaAug 03, 2009 17:36:19 | *Checks Elan.* Hrm. That's problematic, as I'd prefer immortality as something to be sought out; becoming an Elan basically means dying, losing human memory, and losing a great deal of what I seek to achieve with the character, essentially creating a completely new character born with immortality. |
| #5wings_of_peaceAug 03, 2009 17:37:20 | Just like the others. Elan. |
| #6volatrisAug 03, 2009 17:45:42 | From the Lists of Stuff: Timeless Body - or immune to aging, or can't die from age, or something similar
Becoming a Dragonborn (Races of the Dragon, pg. 8) almost solves the problem, costing 100 gp and 48 hours, but granting you several hundred more years of life. |
| #7fisharewetAug 03, 2009 17:49:01 | Anyone know which of those actually stop death? All the ones I recognize + the ones described are all just about penalties. |
| #8kell_kheraptisAug 03, 2009 17:50:16 | Exactly what it says on the tin. I want a way to make my character immortal. The character in question is a level 6 human Archivist, and old. For the purposes of this thread, "immortal" means the prevention of natural death, stopping the aging process, though a way to effectively reverse the aging process would also be nice. How high of level do you plan the campaign to go? Because so long as you don't expect to die of old age before the end of it, you can buy an epic spell from Boccob's Reading Room for 1,000gp. ![]() |
| #9vilettaAug 03, 2009 17:58:19 | Well, I know this DM hates epic, so that's out. In fact, the game may well end by level 10. My character's not liable to die of old age at any point, but one of my character's objectives is going to be obtaining immortality. I'm looking for something that is conceivably obtainable for a level six human, with whatever amount of effort. There aren't, like, any arrangements in BoVD that let you sacrifice a kender every Tuesday or something? |
| #10dbayAug 03, 2009 18:16:03 | Before you die of old age, kill yourself and have someone Reincarnate you. You'll come back as some random humanoid, but with a young and healthy body. The best part is, you keep your mental stat boostsThe magic of the spell creates an entirely new young adult body for the soul to inhabit from the natural elements at hand. This process takes 1 hour to complete. When the body is ready, the subject is reincarnated. As you age again, you get more and more mental abillity adjustments, but you can always reincarnate again to negate the physical penalties. Downside: costs a level every time, but most humanoids live for at least 70 years. |
| #11naldorAug 03, 2009 18:18:38 | Here's an old thread on the subject, a number of good strategies can be found therein: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=562479 |
| #12lo77oAug 03, 2009 18:25:14 | There aren't, like, any arrangements in BoVD that let you sacrifice a kender every Tuesday or something? Well... Actually. If you can manage to swing using the sacrifice rules, you could get the granted "wish" and use it to obtain immortality. You would need to convince your DM that a wish can grant immortality. |
| #13dr_rocktopusAug 03, 2009 18:26:04 | Dbay's way + thoughtbottle is my classic trick. It leads to a hilarious situation we discussed briefly ages ago where basically archmages evolved a cultural predilection towards suicide during old age. |
| #14danduAug 03, 2009 18:41:02 | Just try to become an LA+0 version of the Lich in which you get the immortality but nothing else. |
| #15BalthanonAug 03, 2009 18:41:57 | The easiest method I've found was in a Dragon Magazine that dealt with the subject. They had a 9th level spell in that which transformed a magic item of at least 2,000 gold into an item that prevents you from aging (eliminating any other bonuses the item granted). If your character sells the magic items he accumulates by 10th level (assuming you end there) and seeks out a 17th level wizard, he should be able to get together the 27,000 gold necessary. (Maybe 30,000 if you want to make it an adamantine ring and add some protective spells or something afterwards so it isn't destroyed by chance.) |
| #16tethlisAug 03, 2009 19:41:15 | Not sure if this would work, but there is the steal life spell in the Book of Vile Darkness. If you could hire a 17th level wizard to cast Steal Life + a Wish spell to allow its effects to target you. Granted you would need to find a host of creatures to sap the strength of and it is a process in which you would need to repeat every once in a while. Another way that im not sure would work RAW is to have an arcane caster with at least 4 levels in Spellguard of Silverymoon cast Steal Life and allow the effects to apply to you. This ability states it only works on defensive spells (which would screw us) but then describes what this ability considers "Defensive Spells." Two of these conditions are Improves AC and Improves Saving Throws. If you can drain long enough to regress aging penalties, your new increased Dex and Con would improve your AC and Saving Throws. Its a pretty controversial interpretation of the rules but it might be worth running it by your DM. Its important to note that this isn't an entirely evil process as well. The spell is evil, but the caster can be neutral. The spell doesn't state the ability drain is permanent and as long as you don't drain the "donor's" constitution to 0, they won't die. |
| #17wings_of_peaceAug 03, 2009 19:53:49 | Epic destinies are a good way assuming you can coax your dm into using the non epic leveling variant. There's even some guidelines for how your character might interact with the world whilst achieving some of them. |
| #18vilettaAug 03, 2009 21:01:01 | The reincarnation method seems really cool to me, and as an Archivist, I could do it myself via a contingent spell of some sort. Possibly not what I'm going for, but really, really cool, and definitely a good plan B. I'm liable to settle for a Wish spell via sacrifice, as it's closest to what I'm looking for. Hitting that DC50 is going to be tough... really tough... but I might be able to swing it, and it's the kind of thing I'm looking for in-character. Using PrCs for this are, by and large, too late and not what I'm going for. A couple may work, eventually, but... meh. For such a major motivation for so many characters in fantasy, I'm surprised there aren't more simple, defined paths for anyone with the time, resources, and lack of scruples to attain immortality. |
| #19gilfalas_elaandrinAug 04, 2009 0:07:20 | I am pretty positive the capstone of Green Star Adept, Emerald Perfection, is true immortality. You become a kind of living construct and you cannot die from aging. It specifically even says you can live for eons in this form. Since I am not familiar with your DM's game I am not sure if making yourself into an eternal, adamantine hard living emerald statue would be a social mistake. Or die and be reincarnated as a Warforged or Elan. I would assume there is a luck altering mage PrC which can help with making sure you come back as the race you want. Lastly I can only assume immortality can be achieved via epic magic as several epic level mages in the FR campaign are human, yet vital and several thousand years old (Elminster and Blackstaff to name two). |
| #20naldorAug 04, 2009 0:58:23 | DC 50 check by level 10 are quite do-able if you possess an Item Familiar. |
| #21SenevriAug 04, 2009 2:47:57 | Like any PC in 3ed ever dies of old age while adventuring. I would suggest this as a quest for your DM - as no max age immortality has almost no game effect, it's a very cheap reward. Isn't there an Epic Destiny which also does this, but even better? Like, auto-true rez every day? |
| #22dr_rocktopusAug 04, 2009 2:57:25 | I agree with Sen. If you get to die of old age, your GM did it wrong. |
| #23meatzombieAug 04, 2009 3:59:41 | Isnt there some way to become a Diety? |
| #24SenevriAug 04, 2009 4:57:55 | Outside DM fiat and Ice Assassin? Not that I know of. Well, Diplomancy would work, technically. *edit* Demigod epic destiny. |
| #25siranuiAug 04, 2009 6:34:05 | "I'm surprised there aren't more simple, defined paths for anyone with the time, resources, and lack of scruples to attain immortality." There used to be potions of longevity... And looking for the elixir of life is quite a classic. Talk to your GM about a quest for immortality and develop an interest in alchemy...? |

Hitting that DC50 is going to be tough... really tough... but I might be able to swing it, and it's the kind of thing I'm looking for in-character. Guidance of the Avatar gives you a +20 competence bonus, and Divine Insight can give you a +15 Insight bonus. Both of these are second level cleric spells. So you only need another +14 to automatically succeed, which should be very easy. 9 Ranks and a + 5 Int bonus and you're there. |
| #27kell_kheraptisAug 04, 2009 11:12:09 | Outside DM fiat and Ice Assassin? Not that I know of. DM Fiat, Ice Assassin, Epic Destinies, and Epic Spells. Though that option has been ruled out as it's not going to go that far. Divine Disciple, if it hasn't been mentioned yet, changes you to an outsider, and IIRC the kind that doesn't die of old age (even though you have the "native" subtype). |
| #28vilettaAug 04, 2009 12:51:39 | Guidance of the Avatar gives you a +20 competence bonus, and Divine Insight can give you a +15 Insight bonus. Both of these are second level cleric spells. Well... that sacrifice just became so simple I could do it in a broom closet next Tuesday. And here I was tallying up the generic ritual mods to see if I couldn't get there. Gracias. |
