Improved trip + sweeping strikes

Just a bit of an idea:
Spiked chain (trip as a melee attack)
improved trip (trip then attack for free)
sweeping strikes (attack an extra person when you attack)

Would I be able to use those 3 mechanics plus an ally to do huge numbers of attacks to an opponent as follows:

Spiked chain trip attack to ally and opponent (ally is deliberately flatfooted and fails str check, can the ally deliberately be hit here?)
improved trip gives me free attacks on both ally and opponent.
use free attacks to trip attack ally and opponent, using sweeping strike to split both attacks onto both targets (4 attacks occur at this point)
once you build up a big enough tree, siphon some attacks off as actual melee attacks
Repeat until opponent dead, pick next opponent in range.

Since I used all attacks as trips against my ally, he takes no damage but ends up on the floor.

You can't trip someone who is already prone.

I realise that is logically true, but neither the description for trip nor the description for prone says that. I'll assume you're right and I've missed something, but can you tell me what?

I believe it's in the FAQ somewhere.

Ahh, found it in the section about taking AOO on prone opponents:

When you make an attack of opportunity against someone who’s
getting up, your target is effectively prone, and therefore cannot
be tripped. You could ready an action to trip a prone foe after
he gets up, however.

Makes it clear to me you can't be tripped when prone. Odd that it's not mentioned anywhere else.

You think that's odd? Check out the Improved Precise Shot feat. As far as I know, it's the only place that mentions what happens when you fire a ranged weapon into a grapple.
