| #1shantismurfJan 05, 2011 17:38:11 | I'm using an optimization I found on dandwiki.com that's pretty complicated. It's a combination Wizard/Warmage/Wild Mage/Ultimate Magus. I'm playing it at level 8 right now and so far it's been pretty effective. I'm really enjoying it when I can actually figure out what level to apply to what! The original document had some good information but was poorly laid out, so I've spent some time reformatting it and adding information like the specials gained with each class and the "Spells Known Level" column. I also changed the "Race" requirement from the original author's "Any" to "Human, or any race with a bonus feat at level 1" since I'm pretty sure the combination of Prestige Classes requires that. I'm not the most experienced 3.5 player so I would greatly appreciate any input and corrections to the changes I've made. I would copy the data over here but I'm not sure how the tables would translate. Here's the page: www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Spellcasting_Powerhouse_(3.5e_Optimized_Character_Build) Thanks for checking it out! |

Some/most DMs wouldn't allow this but your mileage may vary. When I tried this build, mine was created like this: Wiz 1-3 (1-3); WM 1-2 (4-5); UM 1-6 (6-11) This is as far as we got before the game ended due to DM moving to a new duty location. You might instead consider looking at this Magic of Eberron spell - Suffer the Flesh (p102) Transmutation Level: Sorcerer/wizard 2 Components: V, S, M Casting Time: 1 swift action Range: Personal Target: You Duration: 1 round You can draw upon your physical endurance to increase the power of your spells. You voluntarily deal Constitution damage to yourself when you cast this spell. For each 2 points of damage dealt, your caster level increases by 1. You cannot take more Constitution damage than your caster level (maximum 10 points for a +5 caster level increase). Your maximum and current hit points drop appropriately for your lower Constitution score. A creature that has no Constitution score, or that has immunity to Constitution damage, cannot cast this spell. Material Component: A ruby worth 250 gp. The only thing you'd need to do is have 1) a cleric around with Restoration (/Lesser) or 2) Potions of Rest/Lesser Rest handy. Also, if you haven't seen: community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... |

Beguiler or eben Duskblade (PHBII) both use INT as their casting stat, which frees you up to dump CHA and raise INT instead ... furthermore both have quite good spelllists with many options... being beguiler also enables you to go focused spec. (conjuration would be my choice) and loose evocation, illusion and enchantment (since most of the usefull illu and ench. spells are on the beguiler list and most of the evocations are accessible via shadow evocation) the most common trick to enter this PC and maximizing WIS lvls (wich should be your priority) is to take only 1 lvl of beguiler and practiced spellcaster for this class. this lets you put all the "class with lowest CL" ups on your wiz side. Plus with able learner and high INT you get tons of skillpoints @ lvl 1 AND you allways have UMD as a class skill Since the entry via beguiler is basically the same as with warmage, the wildmage trick is still applicable and yes, with practiced spellcaster, spellpower and wildmage your CL for all your spells will be char lvl+4+d6 @ lvl 15 ... from then on, your beguiler will stagnate CL and Spellevel wise, but that should be ok ... and last but not least, I'd suggest Archmage for lvls 16-20 (if neccessary using archmage 4 or 5 to enable an additional spellevel on your beg. side) |
| #4ammoghost01Jan 18, 2011 3:44:47 | Looking at this makes me want to build one .. and I've been looking at the Synergistic Training feat from Super Genius Games which makes the CL rather high if I'm looking at it correctly: 1 Beg 1 2 Wiz 1 (Going with Focused Conjurer, as noted above) 3 Wiz 2 4 Wiz 3 5 Beg 1 6 UM1 Synergistic Training: You learn how to apply the lessons from all areas of your life to improve your spellcasting. Prerequisites: Caster level 1, levels in two character classes. Benefit: Select two classes you have levels in and can continue to advance in. The first class selected must have a caster level, and the second class cannot have an ability that increases the caster level of your first class. You gain a bonus to your caster level in your first class, equal to the levels you have in the second class. Special: You can take this feat more than once. Each time you take it, you must select a different class as your first class. Looking at this makes me think the CLs go something like this: lvl (Caster level) [Spellcaster level] 1 Beg 1 (Synergistic Training Beg to Wiz @ 1st) [Beg1] 2 Wiz 1(/Beg 2) [Wiz1/Beg1] 3 Wiz 2 (/Beg3) (Synergistic Training Wiz to Beg @ 3rd) [Wiz2/Beg1] 4 Wiz 3 (Wiz 4/Beg4) [Wiz3/Beg1] 5 Beg 2 (Wiz 5/Beg5) [Wiz3/Beg2] 6 UM1 (Wiz6/Beg6) +1 Arcane Spell Power = Wiz7/Beg7 [Wiz3/Beg3] 7 UM2 (as above, to save typing) (Wiz8/Beg8) [Wiz4/Beg4] 8 UM3 (Wiz9/Beg9) [Wiz5/Beg5] 9 UM4 (Wiz11/Beg10 -- +2ASP) [Wiz6/Beg5] 10 UM5 (Wiz12/Beg11) [Wiz7/Beg6] 11 UM6 (Wiz13/Beg12) [Wiz8/Beg7] 12 UM7 (Wiz14/Beg14 -- +3 ASP) [Wiz8/Beg8] 13 UM8 (Wiz15/Beg15) [Wiz9/Beg9] 14 UM9 (Wiz16/Beg16) [Wiz10/Beg10] 15 UM10 (Wiz18/Beg18) [Wiz11/Beg11] The build might also use Practiced Spellcaster to get the CL of Wiz to 20 and/or Beg to 21 @ character level 15. Would someone look at my #s and ensure they're correct? |
| #5d-harhanJan 19, 2011 0:27:05 | Haven't looked at your exact numbers, but Beguiler + Wizard (focused conjurer) into UM is the canonical UM build as far as I'm aware. I've played one and they're pretty fun. You should be able to find an old UM handbook if you do a forum search. |

Your own quote specifices class levels, not caster levels. UM doesn't advance class levels, it just advances spellcasting. The only CL bonus you could get would be the levels of the off class....i.e. +2 for beguiler levels, or +3 for wizard levels. So you'd end up with a 15/15 caster level, but the # of spells would still be that of a normal build. In effect, it's just a variant form of Practiced Spellcaster with a variable bonus. ==Aelryinth |
| #7ammoghost01Jan 20, 2011 1:39:00 | CM(Sic) - Arcane Spell Power (Ex): At 1st level, your caster level for all arcane spells increases by 1. It increases again at 4th level, 7th level, and 10th level (to a maximum of +4). Syn Training: You gain a bonus to your caster level (CL) in your 1st class equal to the (class) levels in the 2nd class. I know the spell levels wouldn't change (that's in the brackets rather than the parenthesis), but the caster level looks correct, as I've added them. |
| #8aelryinthJan 22, 2011 13:38:27 | Ah, I see what you are doing. Okay, you've the spells of a Wiz/11 and beg/11, but you're casting at level 18. Yeah, that works out. What most people do is use Practiced Spellcaster to set one class artifically high, so that the other gets +10 level raises. For instance, by taking Practiced Spellcaster instead of Synergistic Training, you could set Beguiler at +4 levels. Then, every time UM checked caster level, it would see BEguiler as higher, and would advance Wizard. You'd end up with Beguiler/9, but wiz/13, casting at 17/17...and that's without Synergistic Training. Add that, and your mage is now casting at 19th. Remember, the UM gets a lot of use out of metamagic, so you want all the metamagic you can get...and that means saving feats for it. Without metmagic, the abilty to spend spell slots for spells doesn't materialize. Lots of Quickened Spells and CL 19 are incredibly useful. ==Aelryinth |
