| #1tginouyeNov 01, 2010 17:13:13 | My DM is throwing together a campaign for my group, and as I'll be entering late, I'll be able to make a character at level 12 to insert into the world. I'm planning or making a master thrower, because I think it would be a fun thing to do. Originally, I thought it would be humorous to make a Barbarian 7/ Master Thrower 5, just because it could be a fun character to role play, however, it seems as if some of the Master Thrower's tricks wont allow me to add my STR modifier to my throws. Someone then suggested using the Tome of Battle classes, and since I am not familiar with them, I'd like suggestions. If this isn't enough information, please say so, and I'll try to be more specific, but at the very least, could you recommend some feats to use for a thrower?
(oh yea, I was probably going to do human for the extra skill points/feat, but halfling does have that racial bonus to throwing, so if I did a more DEX based character, I'd probably go halfling) |

Bloodstorm blade allows you to make melee attacks as ranged attacks thus allowing you to use power attack and other melee attacks. Combine this with master thrower you can get power attack with thrown weapon with touch attacks. You only need 4 levels of bloodstorm blade and all 5 levels of master thrower. To get into those classes you need at least one level of warblade. |
| #3KruskNov 02, 2010 0:25:50 | You want to be a barbarian based thrower? How about the hulking hurler class? Or the feat power throw (I think its called) that does str to hit?. |
| #4tginouyeNov 02, 2010 2:46:16 | I wasn't sure at first if the strength bonuses (from rage) would increase damage for the thrown weapons. Plus, I have a whole lot of d12s that are lonely. Also, I've never played a Barbarian. All these factors led to me wanting to maybe be a barbarian. I wanted to be a class that could grab the +5 base attack bonus in 5 lvls, so I could hit master thrower early. I guess there's multiclassing options that may get me that by lvl 7 (so I could max out master thrower levels by 12 which is where I'm starting), but I haven't played much recently, and need to go reread all the books. Warblade sounds familiar, as does Bloodstorm Blade. It looks as if I'd have to be a lvl 5 warblade and a lvl 4 Bloodstorm blade, which would leave 3 lvls of master thrower. Which is fine, I'd just have to wait for 2 more levels before I could get that touch attack ability.
As for feats. Was it called power throw? That's the power attack one for thrown weapons? Also, is there a version of Far Shot for thrown weapons, or is that just some bonus that appears when I take bloodstorm blade?
Thanks for the feedback either way! |
| #5The_Crimson_DawnNov 02, 2010 3:47:45 | If you are going to go for bloodstorm blade you should grab power attack over power throw as power attack has a lot of feats based off of it such as shock trooper. |
| #6tginouyeNov 02, 2010 4:26:45 | So, if bloodstorm blade lets you use melee feats for ranged attacks, how do I increase range. (forgive me if it's in the bloodstorm blade ability descriptions, I haven't yet had a chance to grab the Tome of Battle from a friend of mine). I just want to make sure that I can throw weapons more than 10 feet in the off chance I need to (for example, maybe a flying foe). Also, I'll have to check out shock trooper, as I don't know what it does. What book is it in? |
| #7nistraNov 02, 2010 5:12:40 | Complete Warrior. The idea of throwing your foe on to other foes and dealing them dmg is very nice :D |
| #8hsienNov 02, 2010 7:12:13 | Theres been plenty of Master thrower builds you can search for. |
| #9spiral_rider_hNov 02, 2010 10:21:11 | I don't care for Barbarian entry personally, but I do have a Master Thrower build for you: Halfling Paragon 1/Fighter 2 (Skilled City-Dweller variant)/Halfling Paragon +2/Fighter +1/Master Thrower 5/Fighter +1/Pious Templar 8 Feats: 1 - Weapon Focus (dagger) 2 - Point Blank Shot (Fighter bonus) 3 - Precise Shot (Fighter bonus), Far Shot 6 - Brutal Throw 7 - Quick Draw (Master Thrower bonus) 9 - Power Attack 10 - Snatch Arrows (Master Thrower bonus) 12 - True Believer, Power Throw (Fighter bonus) 15 - Weapon Specialization (dagger) (Pious Templar bonus), Ranged Weapon Mastery (piercing) 16 - Two-Weapon Fighting (Pious Templar bonus) 18 - Improved Two-Weapon Fighting 20 - Greater Two-Weapon Fighting (Pious Templar bonus) If you wish to save costs on enchanting your daggers, you can see about getting a Glove of Taarnahm the Vigilant (Player's Guide To Faerun, pg. 123). Bloodstrom Blade's fourth level ability is also excellent for that, but I personally haven't found a build I like that can squeeze it in (probably because I tend to be really feat-heavy on my stuff). |
| #10aesthirNov 02, 2010 11:26:29 | I have a halfling master thrower build as well that at level 12 already works fantastically. Halfling Dagger Thrower Strongheart Halfling:

| #11spiral_rider_hNov 02, 2010 11:58:52 | You need to be using medium daggers in order to make use of power attack. This build lets you toolbox your daggers, have a substantial sneak attack and eventually power attack at range with touch attacks. In conjuction with Bloodstorm Blade, that is quite true. Just for clarification, though, Power Throw lets you mimic the effect of Power Attack with any thrown weapon (not sure if you were stating you couldn't Power Throw small daggers, so pardon me if you weren't). |
| #12tginouyeNov 03, 2010 1:03:59 | Yea, I was possibly going to build a halfling, as it could provide a fun roleplaying aspect for the world I'm in. I'm speaking with the DM this Saturday, so I'll probably run these ideas by him. Thanks guys! I got a lot of stuff to think about now. |
| #13The_Crimson_DawnNov 03, 2010 1:57:21 | You need to be using medium daggers in order to make use of power attack. This build lets you toolbox your daggers, have a substantial sneak attack and eventually power attack at range with touch attacks. The problem with power throw is that it does not work with the feats based off of power attack. Now if you do not want to use combat brute, shocktrooper, leap attack, or other synergetic feats then power throw is alright but power attack has a lot more potential for a bloodstorm build. |
