What?!? Blasphemy you say? A lowly tier 4 surpassing the absolute peak of mighty tier 1?!? Yep, and then some. In fact, we can do it without even spending a single gp on getting all those spells. How does having automatic spontaneous access to the Warmage, Cleric, Sor/Wiz, and Paladin list sound? Oh yeah, and other than the DC's for Sor/Wiz spells, you're strictly Charisma-SAD (having a high Int helps though, more on that in the next section). All the cosmic power you could ever want is right there at your fingertips...

Now the key to all this power lies in the mechanic a Warmage uses to learn his spells. He automatically knows all spells on the Warmage list, from level 1. All of them. Let that sink in for a second...now think about all those classes that could possibly give access to a casting class's spell list, and tally that up in GP. Hell, even if you were a regular at Boccob's Reading Room, that's a small moon worth of wealth, even if you traded all the gold in for diamonds. But we get it from the words "spell list."

So, with this in mind, it's no surprise that most intrepid young Warmages attempt to get out of Warmage ASAP, as unlike their cousins the Beguilers and Dread Necros (with whom they share their learning mechanic), Warmages have absolute garbage for class features. As ChristopherGroves put it, embrace your freedom!

DISCLAIMER ! :The builds that follow use entry methods and feat applications that some DM's might find questionable. Your mileage may vary. You have been warned...this guide ventures into unknown territory.

Warmage Attributes...a fairly S.A.D. case

Strength - Dump stat. If you've got all godly stats, put a 13 here tops for Power Attack, but you can always buff to get that anyhow.

Dexterity - This one is flexible, as is usually the case for a Wizard. Until 11th level, you'll have a lot of direct damage spells that rely on ranged touch attacks, so you don't want a penalty, and with only light armor, you can use the AC buff until you can make yourself invincible through better spell lists. It also adds to reflex saves, and you're squishy!

Constitution - Important for everyone, and also a little Fort save boost never hurts either.

Intelligence - This dictates your DC's at high levels on your Sor/Wiz spells. It's also handy to have skill points, so you don't feel like a one trick pony/trip in that grease spell/have to waste actions concentrating/etc. Besides...everyone loves an evil mastermind! Also adds a small amount to direct damage spells.

Wisdom - Dump stat #2. Put a 10 in here if you can spare it, totally dump it if not. You have magic to do your spot/listen checks, and the iconic build can do it without a check at all, so long as the opponent thinks.

Charisma - This is where it's at. Main casting stat, dictates your bonus spells and DC's for spells from your initial list, the Paladin list, and the Cleric list, and also makes you a great party face/leader. Combine with Leadership and you'll be a Warmarshall Rainbowsnake!

Warmongering Races...other than Dwarves!

Prime Directive : Avoid a Cha penalty like the plague! Good stuff to look for are bonus feats, small size, bonus feats, extra skill points, bonus feats, Cha bonus, bonus feats...oh yeah, bonus feats rock!

Human - Good at everything, and no exception here. So long as you keep the bonus feat, a subrace can be handy for nabbing a useful subtype (such as dragonblood).

Gnome - Small size, no Cha penalty, boost to a good stat, and the best entry into Shadowcraft Mage (we don't want to waste three dead levels on Stoneblessed...ew).

Strongheart Halfling - Small size, no Cha penalty, boost to a good stat, bonus feat, pretty much all the good traits of a human, and better AC. These guys are probably the top end of LA 0, though a bit cheesy (no worries...this guide comes complete with Resistance to Stench as a persistant buff).

Dragonborn - An excellent template if you have Dex to burn and don't need the extra feat more than the extra hp. This can give you Ex flight, which means no worrying about the silly duration from RS timing out when you're in midair (or going dead from a pesky AMF).

Raptoran - Another source of exeptional flight. Average to mediocre at best, though a Dragonborn Raptoran, so long as it still gets in by level 2, would make an awesome character (cough, bias, cough).

Kobold - Kobold in RED?!? All it's got going for it is +3 mental stats, and you won't be getting in at level 2 this route if you take the stats.

Anything with a Cha penalty! - Sorry dwarves and half orcs, this guy needs all the Charisma he can get, especially in a lower point buy/with crappy rolls.

If LA Buyoff is allowed, check out the Aasimar! A boost to Cha, and the outsider type is absolutely sexy for this build. Even better would be one of the templates that apply that type, as then you still keep your feat (if any).

You don't need a god, 'cause I'm here now!
~Bruce Dickinson, Starchildren

You Keep What You Kill...
And your feats will play a large role in what you are capable of killing. Let's face it...D&D, no matter how role-play intensive, comes down to combat, and if you're useless in combat, you're a liability to your party. While you can play party face with ease (and by extension initiate combat if you're feeling sour...), what fun is talking your way out of everything, including the BBEG's loot?

Versatile Spellcaster - This feat is part of how we get into Rainbow Servant, so it vital.

Heighten Spell - Same as VS above. I hope you're playing a human or Strongheart Halfling if the DM doesn't allow flaws...

Earth Sense - The only reason it's not RED is because it's a prereq for Earth Spell.

Earth Spell - The feat we all know and love for getting in early.

Sanctum Spell - Another useful trick for early entry, and later for making every spell one level lower for free metamagic.

Empower Spell - You've got more than just blasts that rely on a numeric variable. Get creative, and if nothing else, if you have to blast...an Empowered Orb of Force can really ruin another caster's day. You don't have a ton (read : any for the base class of note) of class features to try and optimize, so you can sell everything out for pure action economy.

Obtain Familiar - This gives you free actions, and depending upon your choice of familiar, some other small benefit. Go for a hummingbird if you can...initiative is high high high on your list of priorities, not to mention the little buggers will be hard to hit.

Planar Touchstone - Ever wanted a Timestop like the Swiftblades have? Or a Domain that let you become a kind-of Cheater of Mystra? This is the one! Even if you only ever expand to the Cleric list, you still have planar mobility, so by all means, use it!

Extend Spell - Now we're talking. Extend Spell is not only a prereq for Persistant Spell, but also a nice feat in it's own right, making your lower level buffs last all day.

Persistant Spell - Normally I'd rate this Blue at best, but since you'll have at least one way of using it reliably on higher level slots, it's well worth it. Casting spells once and then being done with them is far more efficient than casting them over and over.

Divine Metamagic - This is rated as both Green and Blue because if you're an incantatrix, it's less useful for persisting, and you have both access to Battle Blessing and arcane spellsurge. If used for other metamagic, it is most likely blue, assuming it's a good feat (Chain Spell, and your party will love you forever, especially if combined with the War Weaver).

Battle Blessing - If your DM lets this work with the primary build, it's on par with Obtain Familiar, as it's a non-dispellable arcane spellsurge. If not...it's like Automatic Quicken Spell (1st-4th). Still nice, but not godly-must-have.

Reserve Feats - Again, get creative. You will always have spell slots, and most likely high level ones at that, for using the abilities granted by these feats. Go for something other than the blasts, as you have plenty of those already (Minor Shapeshift being one of the big standouts, for example).

As a general rule : Your feat selection should improve upon your main strength : Versatility. You are unpredictable, capable of changing focus in the blink of an eye, simply by casting a different spell. Take feats that play to this, that expand your action economy options, or that strengthen a weak point in your build. Play to the campaign too. Afterall, you're playing a character most likely smarter than any three of you at the table, and more charismatic than Madonna ever dreamt of being.

More on feats will be mentioned in Section V.

You Gotta Have Class...
After doing your time in the Prismatic Snakepit, you now have 9 levels to decide what kind of (un)holy terror you wish to become to unleash yourself upon the unsuspecting world. Immediate instinct is to blaze through another class adding more spells, and that's not a bad idea at all. Make sure to get at least 18 total levels of casting, in order to achieve 9th level spells. Caster Levels, while painful to lose, can be made up for by the raw power of the Cleric spell list (namely consumptive field and it's bigger brother).

I'm interested to see this, and I hope you include the relevant rules on how you're managing access to the spells. I wasn't quite sure how you were getting into RS so early, or why it would put those spells on your list (A quick glance at it led me to think that it wouldn't work, unless I completely missed something).

Early entry is easy with Heighten Spell and Versatile Spell Caster. Throw in Earth Spell if you want, but that has a prerequisite so you'll need 4 feats at level 3 without flaws.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it will be a useful resource for people who like late-blooming builds that make DMs tear their hair out. ;)

Just don't forget you need CL 6 to cast 3rd level Warmage spells...

@TemetNosce: he'll use early entry cheese. RS will put Cleric spells on his lsit and Prestige Paladin paladin spells. Though I'd skip the latter personally. But then I'd use Beguiler in the first place because I love skill points too much.

Nice, wasn't that originally in something before Mortal Kombat?

That will be explained in the builds section. The title build is controversial, but the early entry method is pretty ironclad. As usual with anything fringe/creative/GOOD, YMMV.

Early entry is easy with Heighten Spell and Versatile Spell Caster. Throw in Earth Spell if you want, but that has a prerequisite so you'll need 4 feats at level 3 without flaws.

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner, though those other feats will most likely (read : will be) used in the SCM.

Thus the emphasis on not dumbing Int By the way, got any suggestions for a title? The Batman Blitz was suggested, but that just sounds cheesy...

Now back to editing in the mamoth walls of text, and hopefully relearning how to add neat crap to it too (checking for DM's handbook for making handbooks...lol)

What exactly is Heighten Spell's role in the early entry method? I've seen people claiming it's possible to get into RS at level 2, but I'm not familiar with it. I know Versatile Spell Caster is used to "combine" two spell slots to cast a higher level spell, but that would mean qualifying for RS at level 4... I know I'm missing something, but what is it?

EDIT: I just read Kell's thread from yesterday. Sad that it isn't doable at 2nd level without flaws, at least there's a way to enter the PrC 2 levels earlier. Still, the versatility is astounding with spontaneous casting. Archivist eat your heart out.

From last time I was theorycrafting something similar with a friend of mine, I seem to remember you can do it at level 1 with flaws.

Beguiler 1/Rainbow Servant 10/X 9

Versatile Spellcaster
Heighten Spell
Earth Sense
Earth Spell

Use two 1st level slots to cast a 1st level spell heightened to 2, which counts as level 3.

Actually, given a high enough Cha, I think you can do it without Earth Sense and Earth Spell. Since you can Heighten those cantrips to 1st level and THEN start adding em up

EDIT : I'll double check in a little while...back to making dinner for now and working on this in a little while.

It's more like a _potential_ Batman, and the term is used as a synonym for "Crazy Prepared", not "Psychologically Tortured Avenger Who Dresses Up As A Bat".

That being said, automatically knowing all spells on your list + expanded list = Win.

Looks like we have another swiss cheese build here (full of holes). There's several reasons why this build doesn't work.

You need to be lawful good for Prestige Paladin, Mindbender you need to be any nongood. Strike 1.

You need to be able to cast Dismissal or Dispel Evil to get into Sacred Exorcist at 12th. Now you are a 7th level caster by 11th, but since 10th level Rainbow Servant only grants you access to the cleric spell list and not a caster level you can't actually add any cleric spells (ie Dismissal )to your spell list until you gain another caster level. Strike 2.

Prerequisite for Prestige Paladin is to be able to cast Protection from Evil as a divine spell. So you're thinking hey I'll add it from my 10th level RS ability. But....read Cleric Spell Access under RS. It states: such spells are cast as divine spells if they don't appear on the sorcer/wizard or bard list. Since Protection from Evil appears on the sorc/wiz list you can only cast it as an arcane spell and therefore do not meet the prerequisites for Prestige Paladin. Strike 3

You're out!

Other little things that are worth mentioning:

Since you need 4 feats at first level you could only be a Human or a Strongheart Halfling with the max two flaws.

Wisdom is not a dump stat. Since you need a 13 Wisdom to qualify for Earth Sense.

You need to give up a school for for Incantrix so you wouldn't have full spell access.

Even if in an alternate universe this build were somehow legal. By 20th level you're only 14th level CL with a 10 BAB That means only 7th level blaster spells and maybe some neat Cleric ones. (read jack of a couple of trades, not really master of any of them)

Being that it's 4 am, I'm too lazy to multi-quote, so forgive the Twinned/Empowered/Snowcast Apocalypse from the Sky that drains a slave of his life force when a simple Orb of Acid would do.

Nuke 1) Text. Trumps. TABLE. It has a disclaimer, and that is all that needs be said. The RS has been argued for forever and a day since that errata, and as such, this thread will not turn into another one. 10/10, no more arguments. Ban it in your game, but don't dare dispute the RAW of that basest of points.

Nuke 2) Note the position of Mindbender in the build? Can characters change alignment? RAW.

Nuke 3) Alternate Source Spell for any funky source requirements, and furthermore, RS adds Cleric spells as divine if they aren't on the Sor/Wiz list. As for Incantatrix giving up a school, so does any Wizard that takes it, and gee, if I drop Evocation, what have I lost? Oh wait...nothing because I still have Illusion and the only 9th level Evocations I have naturally.

EDIT : Endarire and Flawless_P - If retraining is available, this build is even easier. You can start as a wizard and only retrain afterwards (IIRC there is a spontaneous option in UA for Illusionists). Also, any of those feats that lose their usefulness, same thing, or PsyRef or PsiChir. And not lose any sleep over it. Lastly, warmages do still have some BC to go with the blasting. You won't be quite on par with a Wizard at first, but the tables turn after the "tortured _childhood_ of lower levels" when you can dress up as whatever (Draconic) Polymorph or Shapechange can come up with. Otherwise, yes, it is a bit of a late bloomer, but wouldn't you be willing to take potshots until you could lay down nuclear winter at will? Senevri, "Crazy Prepared" reminds me of Under Siege 2..."Chance favors the prepared mind."

I haven't read Warmage recently, but Beguiler, which you claim also works for this build, says, quote, "When you gain acess to a new level of spells, you automatically know all spells for that level on the beguiler spell list."

Perhaps the text on Warmage is different (and even then I would argue it is most likely a misprint and possibly in need of errata) but Beguiler does not work that way.

EDIT: yeah Warmage is the same.

This is for those using the Knight of the Arcane Order ability to learn Wiz spells. Dynamic Priest will allow for a heavier focus on Charisma by eliminating the need for Int to learn the spells. The trade off is that we lose some spell dc this way by lowering our Int (The Wiz spells will still rely on Int for dc purposes) however much of this can be made up for with miracles, tomes, and whatever else you want but it's up to you.

Also, Sirine's Grace from Spell Compendium on page 191 deserves mention I think for the build. It gives a slew of abilities but the important one for the build's purposes is that it grants the character's Charisma bonus to their ac. Not a wiz spell but if you can't find some sneaky way to learn it just spend a Lesser Wish and persist it however you please and you're set. For the Charisma focused Warmage counting Tome, Miracle, and miscellaneous item bonuses as well as anything else you feel like tacking on this can become quite a substantial all day protection.

While this is a logical interpretation the counter argument would be that the RAW still says the text trumps. Lets also not get started on the accuracy of sample characters. Just look at the poor Abjurant Champion.

Last I checked, only classes with an "Ex-members" section suffer an adverse effect from no longer meeting the alignment requirements. He didn't lose his paladinhood or stop revering his deity ;) Besides, the level of Mindbender is only for Telepathy because Telepathy is cool. It's mutable.

While it requires some rules twisting and in some cases straight DM fiat, I have a Mystral Ur-Priest build bouncing around somewhere that gets full spontaneous cleric/wizard/paladin casting and 9th level maneuvers Oh and it's even a gish without spells, though it works just fine in AMF (that's the DM fiat part...).

I don't think the point of the build is that it gets spontaneous casting I think the point is that it automatically knows every spell on all of their lists without any real invested effort AND can cast them spontaneously.

I don't think the point of the build is that it gets spontaneous casting I think the point is that it automatically knows every spell on all of their lists without any real invested effort AND can cast them spontaneously.

Player 1
Wizard X/Hathran 10
Feats
Ethran (needed for Hathran)
Leadership (needed for Hathran)
True Believer

Cohort
Archvist 7/Hathran 10/Archivist 3

Your cohort uses the acorn of far travel on an oak tree in rashemi, thus always treating you in rashemi, thus allowing you to always spontaneously cast any spell that you know (a wizard knows all his spells in his spellbook).

You use the true believer feat to qualify you for the Complete Divine/Magic Item Compedium relic Tome of Ancient Lore. With this item you can learn every arcane spell in the game for the low price of 12,500gp (2,500gp for the relic since you craft it with the aid of male spellcasters inside rashemi, the rest of the cost is the blessed book 10,000 gp). The tome of Ancient Lore allows you to learn a new arcane spell every day, the blessed book (effectively) allows you to scribe it for free.

Now at first glance the Hathran seems to have effectively done everything that makes the Rainbow Warmage does with far less cheese and no caster level lost. They appear equal...

That is until you realize starting level 12 the Hathran also has the phenominal cosmic power of circle magic.

---------------

I am not trying to disparge Kull's build, I am just saying there are far more versatile spellcasters than this build (to counter Hijaxx's opinion).

Slightly off topic, I'm working on a way to get dual non-sorc-like 9's while keeping 16 fractional BAB and Cleric 3 for Initiate of Mystra...I know, me and my late bloomers (the Manhattan project didn't happen overnight...but it changed the world forever, after all).

EDIT : It's up in the Foch. Lyrist thread. Requires some wrangling, but it's still viable and legal. And sick.

I am not trying to disparge Kull's build, I am just saying there are far more versatile spellcasters than this build (to counter Hijaxx's opinion).

i never, ever said that this build was the best caster build ever, or anything of the like.

i said the warmage have the most favorable casting mechanic possible: sponataneous casting of any spell on his list.
compare that to the wizard's prepared casting of any spell in his spellbook.

while im sure you can do better batmans than the warmage here, the basic casting mechanic remains superior.

@kell: :OMG!

Done, and you should really get a Bard/Virtuoso cohort so that way you can have Viv wailing the solo. Oh, and a contingent greater consumptive field endowed circle of death with arbitrarily high CL to cast in the event he is ever approached by a "deaf leopard" or one of your goody-two-shoes "white snake" bretheren. It's acceptable though if he goes back to the nice Savage Bards used to play with

Off-Topic : I play a left handed 1986 Viv Campbell Nightswan by Kramer, and am both a big Dio fan and a fan of his earlier thrash work with Sweet Savage. He was on a path to become one of the first and highest 80's metal guitar gods, and then squandered his talents with Whitesnake and Def Leppard (where he rots to this day, playing second string to Phil Collen's arse...). Let's see those guys do "Don't Talk to Strangers" justice...oh wait, they left that behind when Mutt decided DL needed a glamrock version of Thriller and they stuck to it Ok, I'm done ranting...I just hate seeing what begins as an awesome band go and hose themselves.

Kell this build is a house of cards. It's contingent on so many controversial rulings that all a DM has to do is say no to one of them and the build falls apart. Basically this build is like Pun Pun except no where near as powerful or fun. Also you never really explained how he'd be able to cast Protection from Evil as a divine spell, since again RAW and RAI say you'd cast it as an arcane one.Heck Batman with d4's for HP and a 10 BAB at 20th? They have a PrC called Vigilante being simple I'd say Batman would fit that pretty well.

Alternate Source Spell lets Prot/Evil be whatever I want it to be. DM's may whine that it's from Dragon, but it's still RAW and still official, for whatever that's worth these days. This snake has BAB 20 whenever he wants it, especially given how easy it is to abuse Persistent Spell. And "Batman" is used as a descriptive, implying he's super versatile, and super prepared. Think psychotically paranoid prepared (like, the point where he gets ejected from the Justice League because it comes to light he has on file every member, including their weakness, paranoid). Oh yeah, and whatever his HP are, add 100 from necrotic empowerment, and even then, he can always cast delay death.

How about this : Copy/paste the Twice-Betrayer's persistent buff list, and that's what keeps you from bleeding out Should cover all the bases nicely.

Batman refers to an arcane caster that is Always Prepared(tm) for the situation.

That being said, I like the build, but would prefer if it did not rely on gray areas in RAW.

Maybe this will help qualifications. Complete Divine 32, along the left column under Spells per Day/Spells Known, says this for Contemplative:

"If the contemplative did not previously belong to a divine spellcasting class, she gains the ability to cast divine spells exactly as a cleric of her patron deity. Her spell progression is the same as that of a cleric."

I kinda wish people would be more careful about early entry cheese. It's not very elegant in the first place, so one should at least do it right. ;)

Just don't forget you need CL 6 to cast 3rd level Warmage spells...

See the PHB p171 under Caster Level. Then re-read Heighten Spell: it makes the heightened spell as difficult to cast as an actual Warmage 3rd level spell...

Maybe you should note somewhere that the FAQ advocates 6/10 casting for the Rainbow Servant, since it's the same FAQ that cements giving the whole Cleric list to Warmages (the RAW points in that direction, but DMs often need convincing).

Fancy seeing you here, Archmage Yes, that's Sword of the Arcane Order.

Omen of Peace, there's like 3 ways to early entry cheese this build, and being cheesy, none will be elegant. Far more elegant to retrain Warmage levels, truth be told, but so few people accept that as legal (while abusing the rest of PHB II mind you, which is none the least bit hypocritical) I didn't mention it. Last but not least, if we go full cheese on this build at 20, assume you have 504,000 gp spending money, and threw the rest of it at Magical Locations with permanent feats, effectively gaining (IIRC and assuming a modest number of "Perform" skills available) 55 extra feats to throw at any problem you may have. Joda should recognize that little trick from BG

Endarire, that's interesting. So if I'm understanding your post correctly, a single level of Contemplative can gain the entire Cleric list? Not to mention a bonus domain at 1st level >.>

although this is a pretty gray area in raw. what happens, for example, to an ur-priest under these rules? or a dragon disciple?
@kell: no, a single level of contemplative will merely gain you a single level of clerical spellcasting if you do not have any divine spellcasting classes(and, of course, a bonus domain).

I think it can be safely assumed that the prestige class can't invalidate itself. So long as you're not getting divine spells/becoming a dragon from another class, you should be safe. It isn't addressed directly though.

I'm going to suggest this one, myself:
Beguiler 1 / Rainbow Servant 10 / Nightcloak 7 / Nightmare Spinner 2

Full Beguiler + Cleric casting, as well as INT to saves and NS goodies. You'd need to adapt Rainbow Servant to give the Evil Domain instead, though that's sort of what the Adaptation section suggests.

I must be eating crazy pills, 'cause I've read this thread twice and I still have NO IDEA how you're getting turn undead in order to qualify for prestige paladin with these builds.

What am I missing?

Ehh, figured it out. Sacred Exorcist after getting into that with Rainbow Servant domains. Interesting.

Which still doesn't explain how you're casting protection from evil as a divine spell. Alternate spell source requires you to be able to cast divine spells to begin with, which you can't, because all those domain spells are cast as arcane spells. Meaning you don't qualify for the feat you're trying to use to qualify for the prestige class.

Ouch, doesn't work. Can't believe no one noticed this. Or am I missing something vital here?

He can cast divine spells, if the spell is not on his warmage nor the wizard/sorc list than the capstone of Rainbow Sevant adds that spell to ones he can cast but is treated as a divine spell.  He then takes alternate source spell allowing him to switch from arcane to divine and divine to arcane for all spells.

I've been looking at this guide a lot recently since I might end up having to reroll in my current campaign (I've come pretty close to death a couple times now).

I have one question, why is Dragonkin not mentioned in the races list at all? If You're somewhat less worried about the +2 level adjustment, its a VERY useful race.

Most of these guides don't cover +LA races, since it usually isn't worth it for standard games, and if you're getting free LA's from the gm, then really there's a bit much material to cover for all the potential builds available.
