Currently I was thinking of going Drow+Boost Spell Resistance+Daazix's Vest for SR, giving me 36 SR at lvl 20 (due to LA 2 on Drow). For class, I was thinking of going straight Spellthief. I will probably use a Magebane weapon too, but I will need a lot more than that. Another interesting thing I found was some nice alternatives for Ranger that can help: Arcane Hunter (favored enemy arcanist), and Spell Reflection (you can send a spell back at its caster if he misses you). but to be frank, even a single level dip won't allow me to steal 9th lvl s[ells. Anything else you know that may help? Any classes designed to defeat spellcasters? Feats against mages? Anti-Wizard equipement? Help and criticism greatly appreciated ![]() |

Namely, Mage Slayer, Pierce Magical Protection, and Pierce Magical Concealment.Something else you might take a look at is the Occult Slayer in Complete Warrior. That class receives good benefits against casters. |

They have a bunch of spells that outright ignore it and Assay spell resistance can be used to strike through SR if necessary. How, for example, would a Spellthief deal with a combination of Time stop and Gate? Not to of course mention that an arcane caster can use a few buffs and beat the living daylights out of a Spellthief with ease. Even if you managed to come up with a build that can go against a caster head on, you would need to find one and be able to surprise him. This has been discussed several times over the years and the almost unanimous agreement is that a non-caster cannot really go against a truly prepared caster. |

A couple levels in Crusader can get you the Thicket of Blades stance. That will help you keep them from 5ft stepping away to cast safely, then add Mage Slayer and they can't cast defensively either. Some useful feats are Parrying Shield (Lords of Madness), Deflective Armor (Races of Stone), Combat Reflexes, Improved Sunder (there is another feat in Races of Stone that lets caster cast safely long as they have shield ready). If you insist on using the Spellthief then in Dragon Magazine #353 there is an alternate class feature called Hamper Magic that could be useful. |

There is agreement that if the caster specifically prepares himself to deal with a melee attacker, the melee attacker is going to have a hard time. This comes down to initiative, and ideal mage situations, i.e. open lines of sight, no ceilings, long distance, and knowing who your enemy is way ahead of time. In game, mages don't prove nearly as effective. It's easier to get close, and an anti-magic shell or Dust of Dispelling shuts them down pretty well. Furthermore, the main ways to avoid a melee shish-kebobing you tend to rely on high level spells. Lines of sight tend to be short, attackers have ranged assaults of their own, your contingencies are spent on other encounters, and bunches of other reasons. Plus, NPC's aren't usually set up that thoroughly, although if you've got a smart DM they can be. ==Aelryinth |

Awesome! As for the ToB stuff, my DM doesn't allow it... |
