| #1cloerApr 13, 2009 22:16:32 | Once in a while, your fighter takes to much damage, or falls down a pit and cant get up and since the rogue and bard don't want to even get close to the baddies and like in the case of my party the cleric is the BSF its up to you (wizard) to save the day. BC is just not gonna cut it, you need to blast. Im looking for a way to do HP damage to the baddies, im playing your traditional god wizard with Evocation, necromancy and enchantment banned. It doesn't have to be massive damage delivered in one round what i want is consistency. I have considered: -Crossbow: yuck -Reserve feats: My main option at this point -Summoning -Wands: Second option. Need something cheap i can easily get and maybe even improve with the incantrix metamagic spell trigger and empower/maximise. But i dont whant to go poor. I can devote 1 maybe 2 feats to dealing damage all my othes are for BC, defense a qualifying. All the usual books are fare game but nothing to exotic. |
| #2WyvernhandApr 13, 2009 22:40:22 | Conjouration has a TON of amazing damage spells, from Lesser Orb of Acid to Orb of Force to Blast of Flame and Arc Lightning. Single target, AoE, duel threat, low level to high, its all there! |
| #3cloerApr 13, 2009 22:54:05 | Yeah but how many can you cast or prepare, i dont whant to become the mailman, i just whant a "side arm" if you may, something realiable, efficieant, and lots of ammo to fall back on. |
| #4casualgathererApr 13, 2009 23:22:14 | Picking up a reserve feat and preparing the single spell is a good way to go, if you can decide which one gives you the best CL increase. If you don't care about the CL, try acid or electricity and the corresponding orb of... from the SpC. |
| #5phaedrusxyApr 13, 2009 23:38:18 | Just summon another BSF. ;) |
| #6dr_rocktopusApr 14, 2009 0:01:15 | Alternatively, signature spell: orb of force is not a bad thing. I may get shouted down for saying that, but having a no-save no-sr hits-incorporeal option available at all times is not a bad thing. If you know twin spell, or many such things, it rapidly becomes lulz instead of just a bad back-up option. Sometimes, you just gotta pull out and stick up. |
| #7phaedrusxyApr 14, 2009 0:47:44 | I'd rather take Uncanny Forethought. It's about a zillion times better than Signature Spell. ;) |
| #8WyvernhandApr 14, 2009 0:50:46 | My real problem with Orbs? THERE ARE FREAKIN TOO MANY GOOD 4TH LEVEL SPELLS!!!!!!! You can never memorize enough Solid Fogs, or enough Enervations, or enough Dim Doors, or enough Evards, or enough Greater Mirror Images, or enough any of the other billion 4th level spells that are amazing. I've taken to memorizing 4th levels in my 5th level slots. I just love 4th level spells.... |
| #9dr_rocktopusApr 14, 2009 2:03:01 | I definitely understand. Uncanny Foresight is a better option in most cases. I'm just a little old-fashioned and believe that once in a while, you should pour orbs of force into the tavern brawl. I also recommend shivering touch or enervation. Pity you banned necromancy... |
| #10SenevriApr 14, 2009 5:12:19 | Walk softly and carry a big stick* *(or a wand, or a staff.) |
| #11kell_kheraptisApr 14, 2009 5:28:02 | In one feat you can snag a Psion as a blaster, with Leadership, and whenever it's needed, have him unleash unholy hell in the enemy ranks. A sorc or wizard could also work, though having just finished converting my iconic to psionics, I'm kinda biased (that and never underestimate an overchannelled energy power). |
| #12ninjarabbitApr 14, 2009 6:10:29 | Leadership feat? Summon elemental might not be a bad option. Even though the damage you'll do with the elementals will be be minimal, it's of the best utility feats out there and you won't be married to one element unlike the other reserve feats. |
| #13Treantmonklvl20Apr 14, 2009 7:26:54 | My recommendation for all God Wizards is to have some summoning ready. The great thing about summoning is it is terrifically versatile (remember - versatility = power). Generally I like it for flank/block/grapple/trip/eat attacks/backup fly/scouting etc. However, I also use them for damage output as well. Pick up Augment Summoning to increase the Str of creatures you summon. Use my Malconvoker Handbook as a guide for what monsters to summon (if you use Summon Monster). However, for a quick list: 1: Celestial Badger 2: Fiendish wolf 3: Celestial Bison 4: Fiendish Dire Wolf 5: Fiendish Huge Crocodile (The ultra-grappler) 6: Fiendish Rhino |

Yes, too many 4th level spells you want memorized, but ban a few schools, the list dwindles. |
| #16ninjarabbitApr 14, 2009 8:56:36 | This is also why specialist wizards ban schools. Yes, too many 4th level spells you want memorized, but ban a few schools, the list dwindles. The problem is that Evard's black tentacles, all the orbs, SM IV, solid fog, and dimension door are all conjuration spells. And that's not even factoring in polymorph, greater mirror image, trollshape, celerity, and displacer form. Even if you were only able to cast conjuration and/or transmutation spells there's still more awesome spells than you have spell slots. |
| #17axatorApr 14, 2009 9:57:38 | Couldn't you just memorize a Bite of the Werebear and have a contingency Polymorph (for twelve-headed hydra) go off when you finish casting bite of the were bear... there's your new BSF. Add in Wraithstrike and you'll probably be out BSF'ing your party's real BSF. |
| #18casualgathererApr 14, 2009 10:01:07 | I find the most annoying part is actually PICKING your 4th level spells. which 2 spells will i be using most often between levels 7 and 9? usually Enervation and Polymorph, but Evards is always a close second. @ninjarabbit, greater mirror image is illusion... |
| #19ninjarabbitApr 14, 2009 12:35:00 | @ninjarabbit, greater mirror image is illusion... I know but it's still a great 4th level spell and very worthy of a spell slot |
| #20dr_rocktopusApr 14, 2009 14:42:26 | Illusion is a superb school. This PSA brought to you by the Shadowcraft Mage's Guild. |
| #21cloerApr 14, 2009 15:11:19 | Thx for the feedback, im surprised no one is a big fan of wands, are they that bad???Alternatively, signature spell: orb of force is not a bad thing. I may get shouted down for saying that, but having a no-save no-sr hits-incorporeal option available at all times is not a bad thing. If you know twin spell, or many such things, it rapidly becomes lulz instead of just a bad back-up option. Sometimes, you just gotta pull out and stick up. I like the way you are thinking but it cost 2 feats, and burning up level +4 spells seems a waste, and i am taking versatile spellcasting so in theory i can make half my level 3 spells into orb spells but that only is gonna give me 2-3 shots. Definitly will consider summoning but the problem is last time i checked the rogue and the bard were level 4 and the fighter/cleric was level 9, since y will be joining as level 1 my summons will be a tad underpowered, i will cach up quicly as i expect to earn +3000xp per encounter, so i will level up quickly if i manage to survive EL 5's. The DM will scream at me if i take leadership |
| #22casualgathererApr 14, 2009 15:12:41 | I don't doubt that. I'm playing a gnome conjurer (ScM, going into Archmage with Spell Focus (Illusion)) right now. That spell just stuck out at me because every other spell was trans. If you survive the first couple of encounters, you should be fine. 1 session like that with my DM would give you 2 levels. Wands aren't bad, but they tie you into 1 spell. also, they are consumable eventually, so stingy players like myself prefer to ignore them. occasionally. they are very nice sometimes. They also have very low DCs and Cls. |
| #23ninjarabbitApr 14, 2009 15:15:03 | Thx for the feedback, im surprised no one is a big fan of wands, are they that bad??? They just simply aren't cost effective and the DCs and CLs of wands are just too low with the DC generally set at 16 and the CL at 7. |
| #24carnivoreApr 14, 2009 15:16:21 | i would always recomend Reserve Feats.... but to get the most from them, you need these feats also: Versatile Spellcaster Heighten Spell :D |
| #25cloerApr 14, 2009 15:21:47 | i would always recomend Reserve Feats.... but to get the most from them, you need these feats also: how does Versatile Spellcaster and Heighten Spell factor in??? can you explain??? |
| #26casualgathererApr 14, 2009 15:43:56 | versatile spellcaster gives you more higher level spell slots to prepare your spell from. Heighten spell lets you prepare a Lesser Orb of Acid as a 4th level acid spell, so that you can reserve feat with what should be a first level spell. |
| #27dr_rocktopusApr 14, 2009 15:48:20 | Not this argument again! People regularly suggest that if you have slots open that COULD be your spells of the right type, then you satisfy the reserve feat requirements. Versatile + Heighten makes this........................ Weird. Suffice to say that it's theoretically valid but reliant on GM interpretation. Ask before you build a character around it. |
| #28cloerApr 14, 2009 15:52:29 | yeah but you are still using up a 4th level slot, No? why not just keep a regular orb of acid in reserve And since versatile spellcaster is spontaneous, how does it help? |
| #29casualgathererApr 14, 2009 16:02:27 | The idea is that you get spontaniety beforehand. At least, i think so. looking at my join date, i'm sure i don't know it all. |
| #30dr_rocktopusApr 14, 2009 16:09:33 | :: leans back and gestures in a genteel fashion:: The idea hinges on the thought that reserve feats concern themselves with your ability to cast spells that qualify, not with your actual list of spells prepared or your set of spell-slots as they exist. The argument, fundamentally, is that as long as your phase-space includes the opportunity to cast spells of the correct type, you auto-qualify. As a GM, my general rule is that I'm allowed to do what you're allowed to do. Your GM may have a different way of adjudicating things, so be very careful and very polite when trying to talk to him or her about this. Fundamentally, though it's not a huge one, this is a game break. Worse, this logic leads to bad places. Sit and consider your position before taking action. Do not spring this on a GM, particularly not mid-combat. Let them know what you're doing and why. |
| #31casualgathererApr 14, 2009 17:43:46 | And don't get mad if he vetos it. If you have a character built around abusing this, and you don't tell him beforehand, your fault. I don't really condone this idea either, i was just trying to explain it. That being said, last time Rocktopus had a post with "Do not spring this on a DM" that i was aware of, it was in referance to an airfuel bomb. |
| #32keithioApr 14, 2009 18:33:14 | Am I the only person who always reads the title of this thread as "Killing God as a wizard"? |
| #33lormadorApr 14, 2009 20:40:29 | There's a spell in Shining South, 5th level, that consists in a Black Tentacles spell which also deals fire damage. There's a 6th level one that even deals negative levels, but allows a save so it's not so hot. I mean, you can keep a BC/debuff strategy and work in secondary threat damage. Burning Blood deals an impressive amount of damage over time. Are you evil? I usually use zombies/skeletons for my raw damage output. |
| #34dr_rocktopusApr 14, 2009 20:45:22 | Am I the only person who always reads the title of this thread as "Killing God as a wizard"? That was a fun thread while it lasted.... We still need to sit down and turn it into a handbook. That being said, last time Rocktopus had a post with "Do not spring this on a DM" that i was aware of, it was in referance to an airfuel bomb. I... see that my reputation precedes me. |
| #35cloerApr 16, 2009 17:59:16 | I think i will go with a reserve feat, either fiery burst or acidic splatter the thing is orb of acid is a 4th level spell, will get me 4d6 at 20ft. fiery burst has more range 30 feat, 5ft radius, reflex half is bad, and i cant go more than 30 feat even with higer levels spells what other spells of higer level can i use to raise the level, is there a "supreme orb of acid" or something like that? |
| #36casualgathererApr 16, 2009 18:28:36 | I'm AFB, but isn't Acid Fog an acid spell? |
| #37jameswilliamogleApr 16, 2009 18:38:28 | I'm AFB, but isn't Acid Fog an acid spell? Yes, yes it is . Spell Filter: http://www.penpaperpixel.org/tools/d20spellfilter/ |
| #38sofawallApr 16, 2009 23:11:15 | Oh dear, I'm happy I wasn't here when the reserve feats were mentioned. Never mention those when Carnivore and I are in the same room, we tend to destroy threads that way. Anyway, my method of killing things as a god wizard is to play a mailman. Honestly, the fighter is going around trying to think of ways to make himself sneakier, you don't need to do damage. That said, Conj. has as many good damage dealers as Evoc., many are better as they have fun secondary effects. (Orb of Fire, Evard's Black Tentacles etc.) |
| #39phaedrusxyApr 17, 2009 11:30:56 | what other spells of higer level can i use to raise the level, is there a "supreme orb of acid" or something like that? A Heightened Orb of Acid? |
