Howdy, this is pretty much my first real post on any of the Wizards boards, so please go easy on me! I have been lurking around for years but only just recently signed up. Anyways, on to the questions!

First, a little background. I am currently playing a campaign in the Eberron setting with 4 other PCs. We are a little melee heavy, but here is the rundown. Human Warrior focusing on 2-handed axe fighting. Human Warrior working towards Extreme Dungeon PrC (I can't remember its name exactly). Human (I think) dual-wielding Ranger (he does occasionally pull out his bow). Shifter Barbarian also going for dual-wielding, heading for some PrC or another. The last PC is played by our DM, actually. Last but no least, my Kalashtar Kineticist, who is trying to mainly be a blaster but also planning on picking up a few crowd control powers. We are all level 5 right now (started out at level 1, ouch) and are slowly but surely progressing through our DMs storyline. Ok, enough background, on to the questions.

First, I made a list of powers I think I would like to get and I wanted some feedback. I wasn't planning on taking Expanded Knowledge unless I really have to, since I want to mostly be a blaster. Here are the Powers I am thinking of in order of when I got/get them.

Bolt, Control Object, My Light, Energy Ray, Inertial Armor, Psionic Levitate, Energy Missile, Energy Stun, Concussion Blast, Energy Cone, Time Hop, Dispel Psionics, Telekinetic Thrust, Control Body, Energy Ball, Psionic Dimension Door, Telekinetic Maneuver, Fiery Discorporation, Psionic True Seeing, Power Resistance, Psionic Plane Shift, Temporaral Acceleration, Psionic Contingency, Psionic Disintegrate, Retrieve, Psionic Moment of Prescience, Decerebrate, Psionic Greater Teleport, Bend Reality, True Metabolism, Tornado Blast, Reality Revision, Affinity Field, Recall Death, Psionic Telekinetic Sphere, Null Psionics Field

Sorry, I don't really know how to make those spoiler things to save space, if someone can let me know, that would be cool for the future.

Second, I am looking at the following feats, what do you guys think? I Left my main character information at home so I will post as many feats as I can remember.

Point Blank Shot, Psionic Shot, Narrow Mind, Psicrystal Affinity, Precise Shot, Psicrystal Containment, Extend Power, Split Psionic Ray, Greater Psionic Shot

That is all I can remember right now. Basically, I want to be a good blaster but have my crossbow for use when I don't want to burn PPs. I always liked crossbows in the NWN games and wanted to see if I could make them work.

If you guys want I can post my character sheet, if that will help.

Finally, is it wise to take Kineticist all the way to 20? I really like manifester level progression, obviously, but I notice some of my final power picks are kind of weak, maybe I could substitute something else up there. I am not too keen on the fiery whip from the Pyrokineticist, but maybe the other powers gained via that PrC would be useful.

Anways, any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and sorry for the wall o' text!

You're right to not wan o give up manifester levels, but please - get out of straight kineticist ASAP. Basically any PrC that gives full manifesting is better than sticking with psion.

And stay away from pyrokineticist. Only two ways to make it decent, and you aren't set up for either of them.

get out of straight kineticist ASAP.

Why?

Basically any PrC that gives full manifesting is better than sticking with psion.

Why?

And stay away from pyrokineticist.

Why?

I'm not trying to be a jerk -- I'm truly curious about the reasons for your claims. I've been recently building a Kineticist myself and curious about what path would be better for a Psionic energy-hurler.

...except it gets feats.

Anyways, you want to ditch Kineticist because all it gives is feats. Kinet 10/Anarchic Init 10 is solid, as is Kinet 20.

Expanded knowledge is good, as it allows you to blast better. Hustle, Metamorphosis (and the feat that lets you gain access to Su's of metamorphed forms) are amazing, for instance.

Pyrokineticist is only good if you're going to go crazy with your CHA mod for heat death, or if you're going to go power-attack crazy with the flame-whip. And the whip is really heavily debated - there are some decent claims that you can't power attack with it. But that's a whole new can of worms that you don't want to get into.

GaffeR's exactly right about kineticist. A feat every 5 levels ain't much in the way of impressive class features. As long as you aren't giving up manifesting levels, just about any PrC will have tastier features. The presence of so many ranged combat feats in your build seems a little odd, butif you want to invest that many feats into a backup tactic, go ahead. Just not my first choice.

Energy Ray (+split psionic ray) and Energy Stun (Best scaling DC ever!) are both amazing powers that you should get a lot of use out of at any level - they both augment amazingly well.

With all those meleers, you shouldn't worry about doing any kind of damage. Your party needs battlefield control and utility (and a healer?).

Think of it like this

Wizard 20 is solid
Wizard 10/Incantatrix 10 is better

same logic applies to Kineticist
the difference between Kineticist and Psion prcs are less grand than Wizard and Incantatrix but the difference is still there.

With Anarchic Initatie you gained full manifesting, wild surge, some other abilities, and if you empower a power plus chaotic surge, you will always gain a beneficial ability and sometimes double damage or more.

Only problem is that, with the exception of the Anarchic Initiate (CPsi) and the Subverted Psion (Mind's Eye. Uses the taint rules from HoH), all psionic PRCs (at least those published by Wizards) lose at least one manifester level.

I will take a look at those PrC's you mentioned, will probably have to make a trip over to the nearest Barnes and Nobles.

Anyways, I spent those two feats early on on bow skills (PBS and Psi Shot) because I wanted to be able to contribute more damage than my paltry power point pool allowed. Now that I finally have a decent pool, and I spent the time to put together a comprehensive guide to my powers, the damage they can do, how to augment, their saves, etc. I see that I don't really need my crossbow much at all. I may forgoe picking up the additional x-bow related feats in favor of some Expanded Knowledge pickups.

I know that the party needs more CC, but I am just a bad person and really want to play as a blaster. The thing is, I don't get to play much, so when I do I want to take advantage and play what I had been working on in my mind for the months before. I had no idea the whole team would decide to be melee when I had gotten fired up to play a psionic blaster, so it kind of stunk when I found out.

Is there any way I could use psionic wands (for the life of me I can't remember how to spell the d-word) for CC? Our ranger is dabbling in UMD for healing wands, would it be wise (possible?) for me to get some ranks in that? For that matter, anyone have any powers they think would be good for me to have in wands, based on my tentative power list?

I really didn't have any specific reason to go to 20 in pure psion, I just didn't have any better alternatives off the top of my head!

Thanks for the help so far, keep the advice coming!

first ... you might look here for some additional ideas:

3.5 Psion Buildguide and Compendium

First, I made a list of powers I think I would like to get and I wanted some feedback. I wasn't planning on taking Expanded Knowledge unless I really have to, since I want to mostly be a blaster. Here are the Powers I am thinking of in order of when I got/get them.

i will adjust the way they are listed to read them better:

1st lvl:
Bolt
Control Object
My Light
Energy Ray
Inertial Armor

2nd lvl:
Psionic Levitate
Energy Missile
Energy Stun
Concussion Blast

3rd lvl:
Energy Cone
Time Hop
Dispel Psionics
Telekinetic Thrust

4th lvl:
Control Body
Energy Ball
Psionic Dimension Door
Telekinetic Maneuver

5th lvl:
Fiery Discorporation
Psionic True Seeing
Power Resistance
Psionic Plane Shift

6th lvl:
Temporaral Acceleration
Psionic Contingency
Psionic Disintegrate
Retrieve
Null Psionics Field

7th lvl:
Psionic Moment of Prescience
Decerebrate

8th lvl:
Psionic Greater Teleport
Bend Reality
True Metabolism
Psionic Telekinetic Sphere
Recall Death

9th lvl:
Tornado Blast
Reality Revision
Affinity Field

but i would suggest an adjustment .... try this instead:

will adjust from 5th lvl up:
1st lvl:
Bolt
Control Object
My Light................... this is a poor choice, use the Power Psychic Reformation to change it if you can(Vigor is much better)
Energy Ray ............... this is a poor choice, use the Power Psychic Reformation to change it if you can(Crystal Shard is Much better)
Inertial Armor

2nd lvl:
Psionic Levitate...... this is a poor choice, use the Power Psychic Reformation to change it if you can(Ego Whip is much Better)
Energy Missile ...... this is a poor choice, use the Power Psychic Reformation to change it if you can(Share Pain is much Better, especially if you have Vigor)
Energy Stun
Concussion Blast

3rd lvl:
Time Hop
Dispel Psionics

.................................. new suggestions .....

Telekinetic Thrust
Energy Wall

4th lvl:
Control Body
Psionic Divination
Empathic Feedback
Psychic Reformation

5th lvl:
Energy Current
Psionic True Seeing
Adapt Body
Psionic Plane Shift

6th lvl:
Temporaral Acceleration
Psionic Disintegrate
Retrieve

7th lvl:
Energy Conversion
Mind Blank, Personal
Decerebrate

8th lvl:
Psionic Greater Teleport
Bend Reality
True Metabolism

9th lvl:
Tornado Blast
Reality Revision
Affinity Field
Assimilate

Sorry, I don't really know how to make those spoiler things to save space, if someone can let me know, that would be cool for the future.

look here , it explains many fun features that make your posts more readable

Second, I am looking at the following feats, what do you guys think? I Left my main character information at home so I will post as many feats as I can remember.

Point Blank Shot
Psionic Shot
Psicrystal Affinity
Precise Shot
Psicrystal Containment
Extend Power
Split Psionic Ray
Greater Psionic Shot

Narrow Mind ....................... Skill Focus(Concentration) is better, even though it is a lower bonus, it applies to ALL concentration checks... still i wouldnt take it, Twin Power is far Better

for what you are trying to do ..... those seem very nice... a fun combo:

Crystal Shard 1 PP + Greater Psionic Shot = 5d6 No save, No SR/PR for only 1 PP

or

Crystal Shard 1 PP + Greater Psionic Shot + Split Ray(expend Psicrystal focus)= 10d6 No save, No SR/PR for only 3 PP

Kineticist is a great Discipline... and works fine even plain old Kineticist 20.... the bonus feats are what make it Valuable.

i have several useful Builds that use Pyrokineticist .... in the Psion Buildguide.. you may want to look at them also .... they are on Page 4 or 5

the targets must ALL be within 15' of each other, thus basicly it is a 7.5' radius effect and capped at only 5 targets...... not often do enemies conviently stand that close together

if you really want to do a bunch of energy damage .... Chain Energy Push.... can affect up to 20 targets with 30' radius effect, they take damage from energy and when they hit something from being pushed

Energy Wave is even more Effective for Mass Damage, as it has a huge area effect and it is a Spread effect(it goes around corners)

Chained Energy Conversion is probably the most efficient

Thanks for the input Carnivore, I think it is time for me to do some research on psychic reformation!

Truthfully, I haven't used Psionic Levitate yet, and really have only used My Light for RP purposes, so I definitely can live without those.

I will dig through you info and post any more questions I may have in here.

Let me just doublecheck something with you, you say

Crystal Shard 1 PP + Greater Psionic Shot = 5d6 No save, No SR/PR for only 1 PP

or

Crystal Shard 1 PP + Greater Psionic Shot + Split Ray(expend Psicrystal focus)= 10d6 No save, No SR/PR for only 3 PP

That means I can use my Psionic Shot and Greater Psionic Shots on any of my manifested rays, correct? If I take Psicrystal Containment could I use both Greater Psionic Shot plus something like Split Psionic Ray?

For a PrC, get into Anarchic Initiate from Complete Psionic. It's a good bit better than Psion, at least for a few levels.

The chaotic surge ability looks funky on paper, but if you run the math on it, the expected value is higher than the cost. That is, you use it for free (especially at 3rd level when you get wild surge 1 for free) and in exchange you have a 25% chance of doing half damage, a 25% chance of doing normal damage, a 25% chance of doing 150% damage, and a 25% chance of doing max damage. That works out in your favor, and the better BAB progression on the class also helps with your touch attacks.

I played one of those characters for about 10 levels, using a telepath psion who had energy missile via EK (or maybe study, I forget). She was amazing, favored energy (cold) helped a bit, and could do a crapton of damage to a lot of selective targets. With Kineticist, you can protect against people with globes of invulnerability and whatnot, but you will probably find yourself mainly shooting things with energy missile, I'd say.

correct ..... any power you manifest that requires you to make a Ranged Attack roll... can benifit from Psionic Shot and Greater Psionic Shot.... you can also benift from Power Specialization... notice:
POWER SPECIALIZATION [PSIONIC]
You deal more damage with your powers.

Prerequisites: Weapon Focus (ray), manifester level 4th.

Benefit: With rays and ranged touch attack powers that deal damage, you deal an extra 2 points of damage. If you expend your psionic focus when you manifest a ray or a ranged touch attack power that deals damage, you add your key ability bonus to the damage (instead of adding 2).

it is a Cheap way to boost Damage without costing Extra PP ....

Here is an Important Tip:

"Learn to budget your PP, divide the Total PP for the Day(including bonus PP) by 4(assumes 3 encounters). This allows you to manifest Long Duration Buffs early in the Day, and have enough PP to last the rest of the Day"

Long Duration buffs and even offensive Powers are very good to Have. Dont just pick Blasting Powers.

there are several very useful Defensive powers that can Be used offensively as well:

Energy Retort ...........long duration, can even last through 2 encounters possibly. its like having an extra attack each round.. if someone hits you, or casts a spell or manifests a power that targets you.. it even works vs Ranged Attacks
Empathic Feedback .... very nice, excellent duration
Energy Conversion ............. at higher levels so people use this as thier offense.... all they need to do is have a few rounds to charge themselves up with

Add in Empower and suddenly you are doing
25% doing Normal Damage
25% doing 150% damage
25% doing 200% damage
25% doing Max Damage+50% damage

The thing you lose for Chaotic Surge + Empower. Can't do wild surge, 2 power points, and you lose your psionic focus. I say that is a fair trade, for 50% of the time you are doing double damage at least.

If your making effective use of the terrain, chokepoints, surprise rounds, etc. clumped up enemies should be happening very frequently. Also, nothing states that you have to use it against multiple targets.

if you really want to do a bunch of energy damage .... Chain Energy Push.... can affect up to 20 targets with 30' radius effect, they take damage from energy and when they hit something from being pushed

If your chaining it your effectively significantly higher manifester level then it takes to get, and use chain missile effectively.

Energy Wave is even more Effective for Mass Damage, as it has a huge area effect and it is a Spread effect(it goes around corners)

Chained Energy Conversion is probably the most efficient

:D

I'm sure these are, but how available to you are they at 3rd level? or 6th level? Comparing a second level power to significantly higher stuff isn't the most appropriate comparison.

true , "if" you are making use of good Tactics(that is not the point here, unless you suggest to the OP Tactics to make the most of Psionics)... but if you want something vs a single target .... Energy Stun would be better..... Energy Missile is not a power that will continue to be as useful as Energy Push or Energy Stun,IMHO
If your chaining it your effectively significantly higher manifester level then it takes to get, and use chain missile effectively.

true again ..... but the Payback can be even more worth it when you are able to use it(9th lvl min... allows you to affect 9 targets in a 60' Dia(30' Rad), and they can be in Melee with your guys at the same time)
I'm sure these are, but how available to you are they at 3rd level? or 6th level? Comparing a second level power to significantly higher stuff isn't the most appropriate comparison.

the idea is to plan your power picks to aviod getting powers that become obsolete.... you dont need a lot of Offensive Powers to be a good Blaster, but since you only get a few Powers Known... might as well try to make the most of it

the power list i gave was a very useful power list... if he was able to make the changes i suggested he would do fine... notice:

1st lvl:
Bolt.................. many dont use this power, but it is a Very nice power for someone set up with Greater Psionic Shot.... it allows you to have EPIC weapons @15th level
Control Object
Vigor
Crystal Shard
Inertial Armor

2nd lvl:
Ego Whip
Share Pain
Energy Push
Concussion Blast

3rd lvl:
Time Hop
Dispel Psionics

at 5th level this is what he would have... he has

1: Melee/Ranged Martial Combat
Bolt
Control Object

2: Direct Damage
Crystal Shard
Energy Push
Concussion Blast

3: Battlefield control
Energy Push

4: Save or Die powers
Ego Whip
Time Hop

5: Information Gathering
6: Transportation
7: Healing
8: Buffing
Vigor
Share Pain
Inertial Armor

9: Utility
Control Object
Time Hop
Dispel Psionics

then @ 10th lvl he would have these additional powers known:
Show

1: Melee/Ranged Martial Combat
Bolt
Control Object
Telekinetic Thrust
Control Body
Empathic Feedback

2: Direct Damage
Crystal Shard
Energy Push
Concussion Blast
Telekinetic Thrust

3: Battlefield control
Energy Push
Energy Wall
Control Body

4: Save or Die powers
Ego Whip
Time Hop
Control Body

5: Information Gathering
Psionic Divination

6: Transportation
Psionic Plane Shift

7: Healing
Psionic Plane Shift

8: Buffing
Vigor

9: Utility

I've said it before, but when you face an Evil Fighter, you don't have to target his friends with your Sonic Energy Missile, you use your five targets to hit:

  • The guy
  • His sword
  • His armor
  • His shield
  • His hair

So, then he might be short some HPs, but he's also unarmed, unarmored, and bald. I love energy missile for just that.

But yeah, a real kineticist will have lots more flexibility with other powers. But I still contend energy missile is one of the best powers out there. Good scaling, good flexibility, and you don't have to worry about accidentally hitting your buddies. And, it's medium range. That's something that many blasting spells don't share (orbs and eldritch blasts and magic missiles are all close range), and the difference is pretty significant sometimes. It's not the end of the line, but for a non-blaster, it's just about the only DD power you need.

In one of the more recent games I ran, I had a player running a kineticist who would target weapons. If the opponent relied heavily on said weapon, it was a very effective tactic.

Sucks to lose the loot though. Then again, if you have to pick between saving the rest of your party or getting that tasty sword, I'd probably blast the sword. If it's just the BFS who will bite the dust I would have to make a strict evaluation between the price of NPC True resurrection and the sword. If needed, even Animate dead will do.

I haven't had a chance to look at Anarchic Initiate yet, this posts assumes I take Kineticist to 20. Adjusting feats, what about this selection?

Feat Selection
Point Blank Shot
Psionic Shot
Twin Power (changed via Psychic Reformation at level 7)
Psicrystal Affinity
Precise Shot
Psicrystal Containment
Greater Psionic Shot
Extend Power
Split Psionic Ray
Weapon Focus: Ray
Power Specialization
Chain Power

With all those feats, Psionic Body might be a consideration. Do the math and compare to Improved Toughness. If your DM allows Metapsionic feats to qualify for Psionic Body, it is definitely worth it.

Another good feat for a Kineticist to add on damage is Privileged Energy (a rare gem in CPsi). It stacks well. Linked Power is great too, especially since you can get it and use it at very low levels (another rare gem from CPsi).

since you are going to Expend you focus(a lot) to use these feats... you Need to take Psionic Meditation to refocus quickly(Move Action). also you need some additional powers from other lists to be more versatile.

try this:
Point Blank Shot
Psionic Shot
Twin Power (changed via Psychic Reformation at level 7)
Psicrystal Affinity
Psionic Meditation
Expanded Knowledge: Metamorphosis
Psicrystal Containment
Greater Psionic Shot
Expanded Knowledge: Schism
Precise Shot
Extend Power
Expanded Knowledge: ?????

Is that too many meta-psionic feats (is there such a thing!)? Is Fell Shot worth it?

No for your Build..... most of your Powers already use Ranged Touch Attacks ... also you have a Limited amount of Foci to expend ... dont try to do everything at once.. remember you must refocus each round to be effective

The ones I still haven't incorporated are:

Energy Push

...... i have reconsidered due to the tactics given by pfooti, and the reasons given by Pinzer... Energy Missile can be a handy Power, especially if you are faced with Humanoid types
Ego Whip

You list Ego Whip as a Save or Die, but it seems like it would take several casts at low level or an augmented cast to actually kill something, even if they only had 8 charisma. Am I missing something?

yes, you are missing some very important points... notice:
Ego Whip
Telepathy [Mind-Affecting]
Level: Psion/wilder 2
Display: Auditory
Manifesting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. +10 ft./level)
Target: One creature
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will half; see text
Power Resistance: Yes
Power Points: 3

Your rapid mental lashings assault the ego of your enemy, debilitating its confidence. The target takes 1d4 points of Charisma damage, or half that amount (minimum 1 point) on a successful save. A target that fails its save is also dazed for 1 round.

Augment: For every 4 additional power points you spend, this power’s Charisma damage increases by 1d4 points and its save DC increases by 2.

no matter what they take Cha Damage... many creatures have Low Cha... but vs creature that rely on High Cha(Sorcerors, Bards,etc..) it is very effective

also if they miss thier save they are Dazed:
"Dazed: The creature is unable to act normally. A dazed creature can take no actions, but has no penalty to AC.
A dazed condition typically lasts 1 round." ...... thus everyone in your party gets to beat on them and they cant do ANYTHING back... they just stand there and take the beating ;)
Divination, Psionic

I understand that our team needs Psionic Divination for information gathering, I just don't know if I am prepared to spend a slot on it! Would it be possible to put it in a psicrown or dorje, or would that be too expensive/a waste of time?

its always good to think about what your group is planning on doing then manifest Divination to get Hints from the DM... notice:
"a divination spell can provide you with a useful piece of advice in reply to a question concerning a specific goal, event, or activity that is to occur within one week."
it is too useful to rely on getting it from items(that you may or may not find or be able to buy)
Adapt Body

Adapt body seems like it would be really nice if we start doing plane hopping, but I can't really see our DM doing that, so I may hold off on getting it as well. I was thinking it would also be a candidate for a dorje. Thoughts?

can your character Swim, how long can he hold his breath .... what about extremes in Heat or cold due to environment .... you can ignore All of that with Adapt Body... and it is a Long Duration effect... you only need to spend a few PP in the morning and it will last most if not all the day(Extended)

Powers that have a Long Duration are more useful to you for conserving PP

:D
