| #1hijaxxMar 09, 2009 14:39:23 | The Kobold Killing Competition This is an optimization competition. The goal is simple: who can kill the most kobolds in one round, using a ECL 20 build competition info Books you can use: Any wotc splat books Important facts: This copetition assumes that an infinite amount of kobolds exist at an infinitely big place. Also, 'how many kobolds you can kill', should be written as, 'how many attacks you can make a round' or something. Basically, this means that whenever you kill a kobold, a new one spring up where the old one was. Also, the kobolds are immune to anything but melee attacks (otherwise some awesome spell area attack would simply win it pretty easily) beaten Champion the current champion is: EDit:he was beten big time, see some of the posts below Mok the ultimate area attacker half ogre |
| #2BloodDragonMar 09, 2009 16:06:44 | You can only take abberation blood at first level. And why no spells? Blowing stuff up and FAR more satisfying then stomping them one by one. Just get into 3rd level of Kight's protector. Inhuman reach. Large Size. And just keep cleving through them... 5ft move cleave, 5ft move cleave, You only stop cleving when you miss on a natural one. Then you get you're next attack and keep on going... So Fighter 4 / X 1 / KP 3 / X +12. So pick something with allot a high number of attacks for those lost 13 levels, and it becomes more of a precentage of IF you'll STOP attack as compared to how many you can kill. Or Binder 4 / Cleric 5 1- Improved Binding 3-Extend Spell 6-Presisent Spell 9-DMM (Presist) -Bind Paimon -Cast Presistented Foots steps of the Divine -Shorten Duration on Footsteps all the way (So you have 144000 movement) - As per chuck. -Activate Paimon -Weapon of Choice... Your Um ... Boot. Sure why not. Dead Kobolds: 144006 x Rows of kobolds you can reach. If you have Inhuman reach and Divine Power (Or enlarge) up: 720,030 Kobolds who have been booted in the head and killed. What's the point of this really? If you're looking for something actaully useable. The Surreal dex has a few builds like the "Machine Gun Rogue." Go check it out. |
| #3hogarthMar 09, 2009 16:18:07 | -Half ogres have type Giant; Enlarge Person doesn't work on them. -Monkey Grip doesn't increase your reach. -Battle Jump takes more than just a move action. There are probably other issues, but that's as far as I've gotten so far. |
| #4hijaxxMar 09, 2009 16:44:49 | The battle jump thig is debatable. it says: you can charge your enemy by dropping from 5 feet above them. i agree that it is cheesy and debatable whether this actually lets you charge wuth a move action. as for half ogres not being able to be enlarged, dang. as for monkey grip, dang again. |
| #5jameswilliamogleMar 09, 2009 17:27:51 | That build that gets a bajillion speed using that flame maneuver would win, then. Or, if that's too cheesey, let him take 3 levels of Binder and Improved Binding to attack everyone via Dance of Death. |
| #6keithioMar 09, 2009 19:59:43 | If these are regular kobolds and they reappear right where the old one died, then the feats "Lightning Mace" [CW] and "Great Cleave" [PHB] will yield an arbitrarily large number of attacks. This is everything but a 1 kills a kobold, which procs cleave, and crit threats (19-20) proc another attack. So 85% chance of gaining another attack, 10% chance of gaining 2 more attacks, 5% chance of gaining no more attacks. With 8 attacks to get things started, you are almost guaranteed more attacks than you could ever have time to roll. You'd have to do the math and find the expected value. |
| #7arogenithMar 09, 2009 20:20:07 | all this is is a statistics course. On the cleave matter, doesn't Frenzied Berserker get something called Superior Cleave? Forget what it does, but it might help. Warhulk 10 +great cleave +as much reach as you can manage + spiked chain. Oh, also, Bloodstorm blade manages to hit somewhere around infinity times in a 100 foot radius. Well, not infinity times, but too high for me to give a rats *** to count it. 10 ft for throw anything, take far shot, enter Eye of the Storm stance (if you make a ranged attack and someone AoOs you (hit or miss doesn't matter) free melee attack on them first) + their level 10 ability that lets them attack everyone as far away from them as they want, once each, every hit kills a kobold, making another kobold, which you get another free attack on, and crank up the great cleave to several thousands. If you can go epic levels, grabbing Dervish's Thousand Cuts lets you double your attacks in a round, meaning millions of kobolds. But then again, thats not until level 25 |
| #8keithioMar 09, 2009 20:34:33 | BloodStorm blade wouldn't work. Their ability would proc many cleaves, true, but those cleaves would proc less than 1 cleave each (.95 due to missing on a 1), so the total number would converge to something finite. |
| #9sofawallMar 09, 2009 20:40:42 | UMD+Alter Fortune scroll? |
| #10BloodDragonMar 09, 2009 23:31:15 | Basically, this means that whenever you kill a kobold, a new one spring up where the old one was. Wait... So If I just shoot one or two a Acid Fountain Arrows into the same square in the crowd I semi-instantly kill a infinity amount of kobolds and could be a commoner... and done without loops, spells... or even a build. |
| #11PlzBreakMyCampaignMar 10, 2009 2:46:13 | kobalds are too easy to kill. Perhaps things with a boat load HP would be more satisfying ![]() unless your an angry shoeless god of war |
| #12sofawallMar 10, 2009 21:08:57 | unless your an angry shoeless god of war ![]() |
| #13arogenithMar 10, 2009 21:54:20 | BloodStorm blade wouldn't work. well with (my math might be wrong here) 18636 squares that you are attacking, 95% of those provoking additional hits (17704.2), then another 16818 cleaves, etc etc, however every time a Kobold dies, another one appears, and is therefore within your reach, giving another attack from BBs ability. So you are actually multiplying you attacks by 190%. After the first 18363 attacks, you get 35408 "more" attacks. Essentially, you will kill more and more kobolds until you eventually kill yourself, unless you make sure you deal damage equal to a kobold's life, and give yourself damage reduction that number (through barbarian, feats, and items). Also, with eye of the storm, anytime you make a ranged attack, 8 kobolds that are around you make melee attacks at you, giving you yet another free melee attack on each of them, so every attack you make is actually multiplied by another 8*95%, so 760%. In essence, the way it would go is for every attack you make, you're gaining an average of 9.5 more attacks, those extra 760% attacks would slowly lower as you fail to kill the kobolds directly around you, however you get two 95% chances to kill each of them, plus all of those cleaves that pile up, so in essence, you should be doing around 9.5 times infinity attacks :D Of course 9.5 infinities doesn't make sense, but you get my drift |
| #14vilettaMar 10, 2009 22:22:02 | Don't go the Great Cleave route. One natural 1 breaks the chain. Whirlwind Attack, though more feat-heavy, attacks all of them. That means 95% of them are dead. Now, what you want. Ogre. Psychic Warrior. Spiked Chain. Whirlwind Attack. Unnatural Reach. Willing Deformity (Tall). For your powers, you want Expansion and Reach (from Mind's Eye. If you grow from large to gargantuan, normal reach becomes 20'. Double makes 40'. Unnatural Reach, Willing Deformity, and Reach each add 5', making 55'. You take up a 20' square, so you pretty much wipe out 95% of all kobolds within a 65' radius with each whirlwind. |
| #15arogenithMar 10, 2009 22:28:19 | Viletta, look up, Bloodstorm blade attacks all Kobolds in a 100 foot reach, gets free extra attacks for doing it, and is a lot easier to do this, meaning more feats to get anything else you want. Also allows for greater weapon focus, if you really want it |
| #16keithioMar 10, 2009 22:34:20 | Don't go the Great Cleave route. One natural 1 breaks the chain. Whirlwind Attack, though more feat-heavy, attacks all of them. That means 95% of them are dead. A natural 1 breaks the chain, yes, but a natural 19 or 20 starts a whole new chain thanks to lightning mace. Now, what's more likely...rolling a 1 or rolling a 19 or a 20? Pew pew pew pew pew pew! math Well first off the cleaves are just melee attacks, so they won't provoke any attacks of opportunity. While you do get a huge number of initial attacks, they provoke fewer and fewer cleaves until you run out. My way you get more and more and more cleaves. EDIT: Also, you only need to be 6th level to do it my way. |
| #17vilettaMar 10, 2009 22:41:41 | A natural 1 breaks the chain, yes, but a natural 19 or 20 starts a whole new chain thanks to lightning mace. Now, what's more likely...rolling a 1 or rolling a 19 or a 20? Pew pew pew pew pew pew! I'm not sure I like those odds. A 1/3 chance of the chain sputtering out on its own, or an almost guaranteed 95% kill. I think I'd go with the safer one. 95% every time probably averages out ahead in the end. |
| #18arogenithMar 10, 2009 22:53:13 | my attacks are considered melee attacks ^.^ granted its not lvel 6, but why would I stick to level 6? Also, a normal hit gives 2 new attacks, not just a crit. This build can use lightning mace too, which would increase it even more |
| #19sofawallMar 10, 2009 22:53:43 | Again, Alter Fortune, wand, contingent, whatever. Spend all your cash on it, and max UMD. No more pesky ones for a while. :D Also, if you only provoke from guys next to you, then you're still racking up 8 AoOs every time you attack. I mean, AoO limits per turn will start to hurt, but w/e. Anyway, if the kobolds pop up exactly where one just died, so many things mean infinite kills...Heck, maximized Flaming Sphere would do wonders. |
| #20keithioMar 10, 2009 23:17:51 | Bloodstorm blade would certainly spawn such an immense number of initial hits that lightning mace's median result would be nonsensically huge. But still, since the challenge is so easy I like the approach of using simplest character, and Fighter6 is nice. |
| #21sofawallMar 10, 2009 23:45:06 | EDIT: Grr... Nevermind. |
| #22arogenithMar 10, 2009 23:52:43 | by a very long time, do you mean 6 really really long seconds? :P And the thing with AoOs racking up, you kill all the kobolds around you from their AoOs on you (Bloodstorm's ability says a free attack on them that isn't called an AoO [actually states that and says it doesn't count against them per turn]), meaning you kill all Kobolds, and cleave 8 times because of it, each cleave gets another AoO from a new kobold that just popped up, etc etc etc EDIT: do I win? |
| #23sofawallMar 11, 2009 0:15:52 | So, in otherwords, you kill a kobold, you gain 8 attacks? Then use one to smack 8 kobolds, gaining 8 more attacks? Thank god these kobolds don't have Combat Reflexes, or else you'd be getting NI attacks, BEFORE cleave. |
| #24arogenithMar 11, 2009 0:31:11 | that would be correct sir however you're forgetting the other 8 attacks I get for free too, because I'm also using a ranged 'whirlwind' like ability, so when they come into existance, they all get targetted by it, targeted by my free "AoO" that isn't an AoO, and cleave.......and lightning mace, thanks to you :P |
| #25thedragonmasterMar 11, 2009 5:51:10 | Why in the world are people discussing (semi-)melee attacks and not spellcasting? EDIT: Nvm, reread the OP... no Apocalypse from the Sky for me... |
| #26phaedrusxyMar 11, 2009 11:05:07 | I think a Chuck-like build where you turn into an Elephant, and stomp them all using Trample and Persistent Footsteps of the Divine would be more satisfying than the other stuff here. :D |
| #27keithioMar 11, 2009 11:07:22 | I just a a dramatic revelation. With infinite kobolds... ...one of them has to be punpun.... |
| #28BloodDragonMar 11, 2009 11:38:54 | I think a Chuck-like build where you turn into an Elephant, and stomp them all using Trample and Persistent Footsteps of the Divine would be more satisfying than the other stuff here. :D ![]() |
| #29phaedrusxyMar 11, 2009 13:37:11 | You're kicking them. I think it would be more fun to turn into an elephant and use the trample attack to just step on them as you run around. Minor difference, I admit. :P You basically won the thread in one post. |
| #30BloodDragonMar 11, 2009 14:05:11 | You're kicking them. I think it would be more fun to turn into an elephant and use the trample attack to just step on them as you run around. Minor difference, I admit. :P You basically won the thread in one post. You don't like the Boot-to-the-head? =P |
| #31ozgunMar 11, 2009 14:28:05 | I just a a dramatic revelation. You have an important, if painful, point. |
| #32randomzeroMar 11, 2009 14:28:42 | It's simple, really, and I thought it was a well-known build (in general, though I don't think it's often rushed like this). Human Fighter 4/Psychic Warrior 2. 1: Improved Unarmed, Power Attack, Roundabout Kick. 2: WF: Light Mace. 3: Two-Weapon Fighting, Cleave 4: Combat Reflexes 5: Dead level 6: Great cleave, Lightning Mace. 7-20: Does it matter? +1 Aptitude Keen kukris will set you back 36kgp. Now, my math is off the cuff and I'm AFB, but I'm pretty sure it goes something like this: 5%: Miss entirely. Move on to your next chain of attacks. 65%: Hit. Kill a Kobold. Great Cleave procs. Continue on this chain. 25%: Crit threat. A new chain is ready when this one ends. 18.75%: Crit confirmed. Make that two chains. Statistically, that's something like six new attack chains for every one that breaks. Continue rolling until you get bored. Write a quick script to roll for you. Continue until you overflow your killcount buffer. |
| #33sofawallMar 11, 2009 20:56:12 | You know, I'm tempted to write that up in Java now... |
| #34arogenithMar 11, 2009 23:07:01 | well you've gotta understand that with the essentially infinitive amounts that you're trying to reach, your odds of rolling multiple 1s in a row is constantly increasing. If you roll 25 1's in a row, it will break your chain, not mine :P |
| #35keithioMar 12, 2009 6:04:41 | Ah, but the number of 1s needed to break the chain is also increasing, that's the catch. Besides, as mentioned by others, the 1s aren't even a problem if you don't want them to be. Although that involves level > 6 worth of WBL, probably. |
| #36arogenithMar 12, 2009 10:29:29 | assuming you're going to infinity, though it requires a greater amount of 1's, you also would have to achieve every possible roll, meaning all chains here would end, I was just stating that mine was able to last a tidbit longer. Of course you'd want to throw luck feats and/or some persists on, but they don't last forever |
| #37keithioMar 12, 2009 11:06:13 | C code #include #include #include int main(void){ long int attacks=5, roll, kills=0; srand ( time(NULL) ); while(attacks!=0){ roll=(int) ( rand() / ( (double)(RAND_MAX)+1) *20)+1; if(roll>18) attacks++; if(roll==1) attacks--; else kills++; //printf("%ld %ld\n", roll, attacks); if(kills%1000000==0) printf("%ld\n", kills); } printf("%ld\n", kills); while(1); return(0); } |
| #38farodinMar 12, 2009 15:16:59 | It takes a swift action to make this special Eye of the Storm Attack of Opportunity, so you could do that only once a round. Not even once actually; Activating Thunderous Throw in order to treat your ranged attacks as melee attacks and be able to use cleave also takes a swift action. (If I'm blurting out gibberish and this doesn't matter, my apologies. I sort of read through this thread in a pretty erratic order.) |
| #39phaedrusxyMar 12, 2009 16:36:18 | be able to use cleave also takes a swift action. Uhh... unless this is from some specific ToB ability, cleaving takes no action, and great cleave explicitly says there is no limit to the number of times you can cleave in a round using it. |
| #40farodinMar 12, 2009 16:45:14 | Uhh... unless this is from some specific ToB ability, cleaving takes no action, and great cleave explicitly says there is no limit to the number of times you can cleave in a round using it. Sorry, my wording wasn't very clear. The swift action refers to activating the Thunderous Throw ability: Not even once actually; Activating Thunderous Throw, in order to treat your ranged attacks as melee attacks and be able to use cleave, also takes a swift action. And those "special" attacks of opportunity also take a swift action. |
| #41iamthatguyMar 12, 2009 17:38:01 | If the only restrictions are no casters, then can we use a rogue with max umd and all money spent on magic stuff.....Scroll of Maelstrom? EDIT: woops. I see that this goes against the flavor of this thread. My bad. |
