| #1thewingsofoblivion_dupFeb 17, 2009 21:55:05 | I want a build that gives someone the largest threat range possible. This question was inspire by a post I saw earlier this week. If this has already been done I'd love a link to that page. |
| #2grifter730_dupFeb 18, 2009 1:30:35 | Somewhat related (gives your weapon x4 crit multiplier): http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031014a Kukris or Scimitars are probably best weapons to use for crits. I think there was a weapon in 3.0 that had a 17-20 threat range, though I can't say for sure. |
| #3wihFeb 18, 2009 2:37:52 | Somewhat related (gives your weapon x4 crit multiplier): http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031014a Stump Knives had 17-20 crit range if you had already damaged the target in the same round. Stump Knife + Imp Crit + Disciple of Dispater + Psionic Weapons Master is probably going to be around the best you can get, though I wouldn't hedge my bets that someone else knows a better way. |
| #4heliomanceFeb 18, 2009 4:24:12 | Psionic Weapons Master doesn't work with Disciple of Dispater. DoD only works wih iron weapons and PWM only works with crystal weapons. Ibelieve the general record is 9-20. You may be able to improve that if you're allowed to use the Weapons Master class from Sword and Fist. |
| #5oprickFeb 18, 2009 6:47:09 | iirc, the kukri in 3.0 had a 17-20 |
| #6PlzBreakMyCampaignFeb 18, 2009 8:17:36 | What about a double weapon? Would having one side metal and one side crystal work? eh I'm AFB but I considered that build for a crit build a while ago... |
| #7grifter730_dupFeb 18, 2009 10:16:47 | iirc, the kukri in 3.0 had a 17-20 That's probably it, since I remember wanting the kukri really bad back then. 9-20/x2... do you really need more than that? I'd prefer doing something like 12-20/x4 and using Kaorti steel to get that x4 instead of getting an additional 3 on the threat range. Of course if you can get 9-20/x4, that's even better. |
| #8gilfalas_elaandrinFeb 18, 2009 10:28:48 | Try Kensai (Weapons Master) from OA. It has most of the abilities of the Psionics weapons master as far as crits go and does not have a material type restriction on the weapons aside from simply HAVING a masterwork weapon to qualify for the PrC. It even specifically states that once your in the PrC you can lose the MC weapon and still retain all your abiltites. Problem is it is EXTREMELY feat heavy to get into and the crit threat boost is not until level 6-7. |
| #9phaedrusxyFeb 18, 2009 11:11:45 | That's probably it, since I remember wanting the kukri really bad back then. 9-20/x2... do you really need more than that? Kaorti weapons aren't metal, so no DoD with them! |
| #10thedragonmasterFeb 18, 2009 11:27:39 | There also was the Bladed Gauntlet in 3.0 Sword and Fist that had a threat range of 17-20, but it was errata'ed to 19-20 (not for it being a mistake in the first place, but to nerf it). |
| #11SydonisFeb 18, 2009 11:42:50 | I believe the general record is 9-20. How exactly does one get a 9-20 critical threat range? that's rediculous! What exactly does a character need to possess to have that kind of range? |
| #12necrosnoop110Feb 18, 2009 12:04:33 | What are the best core + complete books options? |
| #13phaedrusxyFeb 18, 2009 12:05:01 | How exactly does one get a 9-20 critical threat range? that's rediculous! What exactly does a character need to possess to have that kind of range? Start with a 17-20, and double it twice via classes or feats. I don't think there are any weapons that have a 17-20 anymore, though. |
| #14rparaviciniFeb 18, 2009 12:18:35 | How exactly does one get a 9-20 critical threat range? that's rediculous! What exactly does a character need to possess to have that kind of range? Disciple of Dispater 8 + Improved Critical (Scimitar) + Iron or Steel Scimitar Alternatively substitute Scimitar for an 18-20 critical weapon of your choice. |
| #15phaedrusxyFeb 18, 2009 12:56:48 | Disciple of Dispater 8 + Improved Critical (Scimitar) + Iron or Steel Scimitar That only gets you to 12-20. |
| #16gilfalas_elaandrinFeb 18, 2009 13:02:14 | That only gets you to 12-20. As does Kensai(Weapon Master) 7 with any weapon. |
| #17sansvoirFeb 18, 2009 13:48:08 | That only gets you to 12-20. Scimitar gives 18-20 MoD 8 gives 12-20 Improved Critical gives 9-20 x3 from MoD stacks with x2 from Improved crit for x4 range. Aka 9-20 |
| #18phaedrusxyFeb 18, 2009 14:37:13 | Scimitar gives 18-20 Does Disciple of Dispater have two increases? I forgot. |
| #19willpowerFeb 18, 2009 15:17:01 | There also was the Bladed Gauntlet in 3.0 Sword and Fist that had a threat range of 17-20, but it was errata'ed to 19-20 (not for it being a mistake in the first place, but to nerf it). Yeah, before that happened I had a villain Dwarf fighter that dual weilded them. He took on the whole party himself. Lost, but it was a tough fight. |
| #20SIKBUZFeb 18, 2009 15:30:53 | Use a Jovar with Disciple of Dispater 8 and Mythic Exemplar 2 Kaorti Jovar = 18-20/x4 Disciple of Dispater 8 with Improved Crit gives 9-20/x4 Mythic Exemplar 2 gives another 1 to crit range = 8-20/x4 (I think?) Brilliant Weapon enchantment makes attacks vs touch AC Blessed/Holy (not sure which - any help guys) Weapon auto confirms crits.. All this equals a whole world of pain for those able to be hit by crits Enjoy |
| #21grifter730_dupFeb 18, 2009 16:29:20 | All this equals a whole world of pain for those able to be hit by crits Truedeath and Demolition Crystal from MIC would be nice. Fortification armor is boooooo ![]() |
| #22oprickFeb 18, 2009 16:47:45 | kaorti weapons dont work with DoD, because they are made of resin, not iron |
| #23SIKBUZFeb 18, 2009 16:56:33 | kaorti weapons dont work with DoD, because they are made of resin, not iron Ahh.. Very true. :D There may be something else out there that will enlarge the multiplier. The build above can be obtained by level 17 (maybe 16) . I can't be sure because I'm away from any books.Other than what I've posted, the Weapons Master from Oriental Adventures may help but I don't know what level we are building this to.. |
| #24EndarireFeb 18, 2009 18:27:07 | Mercurial weapons (Sword & Fist) have a x4 crit last I saw. |
| #25wihFeb 19, 2009 0:04:20 | Mercurial weapons (Sword & Fist) have a x4 crit last I saw. 3.0 Mercurial Weapons were updated from S&F in A&EG to 20x4 crit weapons, so the crit range is negligible. |
| #26idontknowFeb 19, 2009 0:56:55 | Psychic weapon master also adds to your crit range and it stacks with improved critical. Link below http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040827d |
| #27saladin77Feb 19, 2009 0:58:05 | The best way to exploit a high threat range, imo, is Blood in the Water stance from Tome of Battle. Dual-wielding Speed Scimitars will get you 9 attacks per round, with an average of 5.4 threats each round. This means that each round of combat, you get an average of +5.4 to attacks and damage, stacking until the end of the combat. After 5 rounds of attacking in melee, thats a +27 to your attack and damage. The only problem is that there's a good chance the enemy's AC will be so high that a threat is not enough to hit them. |
| #28idontknowFeb 19, 2009 1:01:28 | Now that I think about it psychic warrior 5/ psychic weapon master 7/disciple of discipater 8 works well. Both prestige classes get their crit ability at level 7 repectively 8 wich makes this a nice round build for level 20 (and playable too from up to level 1) |

| #30true_shinkenFeb 19, 2009 8:32:38 | Psychic Warrior/Psychic Weapon Master or Warblade/Disciple of Dispater into Kensei is pretty doable. Remember that the Kensei from Oriental Adventures was never updated to 3.5; all updated PrCs from OA are listed on Dragon Magazine 318 and Kensei is not among them. |
| #31ozgunFeb 20, 2009 11:38:51 | The best way to exploit a high threat range, imo, is Blood in the Water stance from Tome of Battle. That is where having a bunch of Power Critical feats comes in. +4 to crit-confirm is an appreciated boost. |
| #32phaedrusxyFeb 20, 2009 11:49:16 | That is where having a bunch of Power Critical feats comes in. +4 to crit-confirm is an appreciated boost. That still won't make a difference if your attack can't even hit their AC. Critical threats don't automatically hit. That's only a natural 20. |
| #33surrealFeb 20, 2009 11:59:01 | Burn a feat on EWP Great Scimitar from Sandstorm, which is basically a scimitar but exotic so you can dip into Exotic Weapons Master for uncanny blow. There's also a material you can make it out of (it is metallic) which adds +4 to your confirmation rolls. |

I think this is mentioned because so many people play where threats are treated as 20's. Because we all love blowing obscene amounts of cash on a vorpal weapon until we learn in only should work on a natural 20's auto-hit ![]() |
| #35spectre3541Feb 20, 2009 14:59:21 | For criticals, I think this is most likely the best thready out there... http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=15764409 |

| #38atomickitkatFeb 22, 2009 18:51:28 | Can't remember. Is Kensei from OA same thing as Kensai from CW? |
| #39wihFeb 22, 2009 23:41:30 | Can't remember. Is Kensei from OA same thing as Kensai from CW? While technically the CW Kensai replaces the OA Kensei, they're completely different classes. |
