Hi all,

This is my first time posting here, but I have stalked the boards for some time. If I make any mistakes, feel free to call me a moron and tell me how to fix my post.

I have been accepted into a level 21 gestalt game with some odd rules, I will list out the house rules, then the current build and other information I feel relavant.

Rules/House Rules:
  • Point Buy: 32 Points on a 1:1 basis (10 points to go from 8 to 18)
  • Up to 2 flaws are allowed
  • Intelligence increases are retroactive with Skills (So when you recieve a permanent Int mod, you gain a skill per level)
  • Everyone recieves a 'minor artifact' for free. (Mine was custom made by the DM, and stats are posted below)
  • No Level Buyoffs are allowed
  • All 3.5 books are allowed
  • Limited Level Dipping, If you take a presige class you have to take it the entire way.
  • No Dragon magazines or 3rd party books are allowed.
  • No Epic Spellcasting until level 26, and Leadership is only used for cohorts.

Custom 'Minor Artifact':
The rod counts as a +5 keen quarterstaff
May at will generate a antimagic field around itself, which does not effect itself or it's abilities
The rod is an Intelligent Item with 20 int and wis, and 16 cha.
It can speak Common, Elven, Dwarven, Gnome, Halfling, Draconic, and it has telepathy. It has 120 ft. darkvision, blindsense, and hearing. The item is Lawful Evil. The item has an ego of 38.
It can use the power of the rod of cancellation 3/day
It can use dimensional anchor on a foe 1/day
Item can create deeper darkness 3/day
It can use hold person on an enemy 3/day
It has deathwatch continually active
It can use faerie fire 3/day
It has 10 ranks in Sense Motive
If it absorbs (with Rod of Cancellation) an item it becomes Axiomatic and unholy for 1d4 hours, if that item was epic it gains Axiomatic Power and Unholy Power as well for 1d4 hours.
DC for all Abilities is 28.
It's anti-magic field won't effect anything you produced, such as your spells, items you made and the like. However you can't cast any new spells when it is active. (This has some Roleplaying origins with it using the rod of cancellation effect on my Phylactery)

Character Setup:
I want to apply the Dark Template, and the Lich Template to one side of the progression, and on the other side I want a full caster progression. The original build was

Beguiler 20/Shadowcraft Mage 1 // Dark/Lich/Monk 16

On a Gray Elf base (House rule from the "magical tests" thing from Complete Arcane and the flavor text from shadowcraft mage).

I can post a full feat progression if anyone wants it, but this plan pretty much has to be scrapped. Before the game started several other players were using the Killer Gnome builds from the Shadowcraft Mage Handbook. In order to avoid being a copycat I beseech you for your guidance.

Using a Dark Gray Elf Lich, I would like to keep Beguiler 20 on one side for the casting and skills. I am thinking of something as follows:

Beguiler 20/Dark // Cleric 17/Lich 4

But that makes me MAD (not terrible with the point buy system, but...) I'm looking for another Int based class that might synergize with Beguiler? Should I just take the Shadow and Illusion Domains as the Cleric? or is there a class somewhere I'm missing?

For roleplaying purposes I strongly wish to remain Lawful Evil, so Barbarians are banned. And I am not looking for a complete build (unless anyone wants to write one up, lol) but class ideas that synergize with the beguiler (that aren't Shadowcraft Mage)

Archivist will get you pure int based casting. Or you could take Academic Priest from Dragonlance: Legend of the Twins which makes your divine casting int based except for the dcs.

Edit: Rainbow Servant if you take the evil adaptation from complete divine will also net you full divine spellcasting if you put it on the not beguiler side of the Gestalt. I say full divine casting because it lets you add divine spells to your list of spells and Beguilers automatically know and can cast all spells on their list.

How about...
Wizard 6/Swiftblade 10/Abjurant Champion 5
And
Archivist 21

Very different from what you wanted re: beguiler, but I think the other suggestions cover the options for beguilers pretty thoroughly. Other than mentioning that favored soul is pretty rad, there's not a lot else for me to say there. This build gets: Nines on both sides, BaB 17/18. Pure int synergy. Broken haste.

Question, how are PrCs working? can you have two at once? That's supposed to be illegal in gestalt, but the you-must-finish-all-prcs deal is making it hard to run just one PrC at a time.

Could he apply Academic Priest to Ur-Priest? That thought just occurred to me. Because then he could Theugre one side for full Arcane and Divne casting and do some grotesque power attack build using Revenant blade and Frenzied Berserker on the other side.

MT is normally disallowed by gestalt rules.

Shoot forgot about that. And I so liked the idea of a lich actually fighting in melee dealing absurd damage from brute force.

Have you considred being a Dread Necromancer 21// Dark 1/Artificer 20?

That way you can complement your spellcasting through runestaves and wands, you get the skills ans 4 extra levels. You could be doing pretty much anything, by virtue of skeletal, vampiric, corpse, etc. minions.

Humbly yours,

They are standard Gestalt rules, no prestige on both side, and no "dual class" prestige. I might be able to get a little leeway on the "no level dipping" but he said you needed an amazing reason and I doubt "CharOp" counts :-\

After looking over it, I think I'll probably end up going with Beguiler 20/X 1 // Wizard (Transmuter) 5/Rainbow Servant 10/Master Specialist 2/Lich 4

It doesn't give me 9th level casting on both sides, but it does give me a lot of spells and a wide selection... Still looking for advice though.

Where would I find the epic progression for Archivist?

One Side: Erudite Spell to Power at least 17, Int of 18 at start goes to 20(+)
Other Side: Ur-Priest 10, Wis of 18 at start goes to 20(+)
filler for the rest.
Level 21 feat of note: Improved Spell Capacity - adapted to Psionics as per the epic rules.
Why?
This gives you psi 10th level "spell" capacity, which opens 9th level Wizard spells, to the Erudite Spell to Power option in Mind's Eye here at wizards.com. This gives you access to 9th level spells that need M components, that now don't need those M components. Super Sweet.

Psi 9s
Wizard 9s
Cleric 9s
extra goodies
Not bad, without Epic Spells.

Hmm, if you want lots of casting, skill points, and lichdoom I would go

Dreadnecro 21// Spell Thief 1/Bard 9/Sublimechord 11

The bard and spell theif will give you 6 skill points a level for the first 10 and 4 points a level for the next 11 with sublime chord. Next your caster level will be as high as 42 at level 21 (without equipment). Without feats, the sublime chord sets your caster level at its level plus the level of one other caster class. For this you choose dread necromancer, placing you total spell caster level for all classes at 32. For more fun, there is a feat for the spell thief that lets you add all your caster class levels together to determine your caster level. It also sets your ability to steal spells to that of your combined arcane levels, so full spell thief stealing.

This is a simple build, you can always take another prestige class earlier. You will end up with 9th level dread necro and sorc spells with access to 6th level bard spells. All of this at a very high caster level and cast off of Cha. You may have to drop spell thief depending on how you are doing favored classes with gestalt.

Also note that you will be advancing two classes epically (dread necro and sublime chord), meaning you will get bonus epic feats from both classes.

If you are interested in buffing, I would also suggest the illurian race from races of destiny. They are basically humans (any class is favored), but they get word based powers. Take the option that allows you to use turn undead attempts to apply metamagic without raising the spell level. Basically divine metamagic, but it works with arcane spells too. The race is humanoid so you still can become a lich.

Thank You everyone, I submitted my character sheet to the DM a few minutes ago, and while it wasn't fully optimized because of RP reasons, you all helped a great deal.

Thanks again, especially for such fast responses. I was expecting it to take at least a few more days before I got something that satisfied me. I hope I can contribute to your questions at some point.

Sorcerer 16/ Spellwarp Sniper 5//Spellthief 20/Sorcerer +1

Master Spelltheif, caster level 41 or 42 (I think for all spells)

I really like that mix, plus you can steal spells from other people..

If you want to play a lich and can get around the "finish PrC" bit: Ur Priest 2/Walker in the Wastes 10 is GREAT for what you want to do.
