I'm about to participate in the "Quicksilver Hourglass" premade campain. For it, my friends and I are making a party of level 30 characters. We are allowed to use all 3.0 to 3.5 material and anything published including Dragon magazine, books by AEG, Green Ronin, ect. ect. ect.

We have to have predetermined stats of 18, 18, 16, 14, 12, and 10. I have already made a "draft" of my character and I would just like some of you more experienced (and most exalted) veterans of the game to help me with this build. I exspecially need help with spell choice. I have a vague idea but I would love whomever gives me , in their opinion, the epitome of the best spells to have when playing a character based on the "Killer Gnome" strategy.

I deeply appreciate and thank any of you who are kind enough to help me. I'll try to reply as swiftly and as often as I can to any quaries into my decisions. Here is what I have so far:

How does that build combination work? The overall strategy I mean.

With the one I have it was just taking advantage of the above average 100% of reality and damage and with some metamagic abuse.

Improved metamagic (4) the feat + Improved heighten spell + Improved Metamagic (Inc capstone) (1) + Earth Spell (1) = Casting effectively 10th level silent images from 4th level slots. With arcane thesis:silent image any metamagic under 7 is free.

And his character didn't lose his VoP by continuing to associate with you? Unless you killed all the witnesses that seems strange.

Anyways, if you can work Dweometerkeeper 10 in there, you get component-free spells from any school as supernatural abilities AND -2 to all metamagic costs (-1 from this, -1 from Incantatrix). Free Maximize, Reach Spell, and Twin Ray on like everything?

That'll cut into epic incantatrix pretty steeply. Not worth it IMO.

In character he wouldn't know so it wouldn't break Vow of Poverty. Its really just a joke between me and him. An evil character teaming with a Vow of Poverty for the the money has a nice irony to it.

I have plenty of time before the campain so I'll make both of your suggestions and mae comparisons between the two. Even if one is prefered I can take levels of Dweometerkeeper or Epic Icantrix from 31 to 40. I need something to go into next after all. :P ^^

If you can get your DM to allow non gnomes to be shadowcraft mages, then I would recommend a Wizard 5/Hathran 20/Shadowcraft Mage 5 or an Archivist 5/Hathran 20/Shadowcraft Mage.

Circle Magic+A huge amount of epic feats since you get epic feats every 2 levels with Hathran.

I'm sure he would allow it; I let him bypass certain races and location requirements as well.

Yeah, circle magic could come in handy. I wish Hathran had greater circle magic like Red Wizards, but only the Epic Hathran gets a bonus feat every 2 levels. :/

I'll have to compare the benefits of going epic Incantrix with Hathran since they are both very inticing. 20 levels of Incantrix gets 3 metamagic feats, instant metamagic, and 3 epic bonus feats and 20 levels of Hathran would give me circle magic plus 5 bonus epic feats. At first it looks like Incantrix would be the most efficient but further on Hathran looks to be a winner. I just have to get my DM to bypass the race limitation of SCM or coarse and see if he'll let me use leadership.

Incantatrix has metamagic effect. That's too smexy to drop right now. If you expect to go higher than 40 pretty fast, hathran could be worth it.

Incantatrix has metamagic effect. That's too smexy to drop right now. If you expect to go higher than 40 pretty fast, hathran could be worth it.

Remember Hathran besides having lots of epic feats

Can switch out spells on the fly with Rashemi Spirit Magic. She can do this anywhere thanks to the Acorn of Far Travel.

She gets more epic feats than a Incantatrix. At level 30 she will have a total of 4 feats from levels, and 5 from class levels for a total of 9, vs a total of 7 for incantatrix (4 from levels, 3 from class levels).

This means she can take Improved Metamagic 4 times (this by itself isn't that big of a deal since the Incantatrix can take it 3 times and his 10th level ability is effecitvely another one for a total of 4).

Thing is though if she subs out a Heightened Silent Image which takes a 5th level slot, but is a 9th level spell due to heighten(and a 10th level spell after earth spell), she can use the Rashemi Spirit Magic ability to switch that spell out for any other 9th level spell in existance in her multiple spells/prayerbooks.

In other words, she can be throwing out 30+ 9th level spells per day at the bare minimum (before she uses epic spellcasting to boost her Intelligence/Wisdom to obscene levels thus giving her even more bonus spells).

----

Oh Circle Magic will also allow her to have a caster level bonus of +40 for a caster level in the 70s, and she can also boost dispel checks from 1d20+20 to 1d20+60. Combine with Battlemagic Perception and Spell Stowaway Timestop/Celerity and suddenly the enemy caster won't be casting anything before she dispels the **** out of it, followed by a 9th level spell up that person's ass.

----

Also remember you can do circle magic several times per day, you aren't limited to 1 circle, only to the fact each circle takes 1 hour to prepare. Circle magic can give you effectively free heightens which translates into more high level spells. And the 10th level ability of Hathran is Greater Circle Leader.

I dont' have much time, but a couple of sweet epic things. make darn sure you gain a bonus epic feat at level 27 when you can take improved metamagic, i.e. take a level of anything else in epic before 27 and take 9 levels of incatatrix for max feat, and also max multispell goodness. you may be able to make silent images miracles as well I know theres something on this site about how to munch that.

remember any feat you gain from a class while you at lvl21 or above grants you a choice of either that classes pre epic choices or a pick of there bonus epic feat choices.. i.e. if you take a level of fighter you could take damage reduction at level 21 even if it's only your first level .

if at all possible try and take your 5th level of wizard at level 21 , for the extra bonus epic feat.. vs non epic . can't remmeber the page in epic book but it is just around the page with the epic barbarian pic on it that explains the bonus feat shenanigans.. it sure could be more succinct . good luck mate

Stuff

You still lose 4 metamagics. Your points are all quite good though. Note the prereqs on improved metamagic though. At best, the Hathran gets it one more time for equal metamagic reductions.

Hathran is a different style and more feat-tight pre epic, but comes out on the same power level IMO.

Thanks for reminding me of the accorn combo.

archr, the section is on page 8 under Adding a second class. it says excactly what you gain from taking a new class after lvl 20. at the end of the paragraph it states"when you have to choose from a list of bonus feats in your second class you can also choose from bonus epic feats described for each class below"

oh just a thing about epic levels... most likley everyhting will be saving against every spell you cast, so spells without saves are pretty great.. unless of course you can munch a mental epic spell for intelligence etc to get your dc's to stupid levels, but it's annoying territory is epic spells. one of the best spells you can mess with is obediant avalanche from frostburn or the force orb spell metamagiced to hell and back, try creating a higher level one with more damge cap.
ohh if you can squeeze a level of nightmare spinner it's a bunch more spells, empyreal armour is nice as you can get a +5 sacred bonus to your saves , it's in book of exaulted deeds.
the darkstalker feat is fantastic, it means blindsight tremorsense scent et al, can;t be used against you, peeps can only see you with a spot check, it's in the lords of madness book. if you max hideability, and your a dark creature so hide in plain sight as well, pretty much nothing can see you, even when your casting spells and thats about the best defense in the game:P.

well, the srd on epic stuff is a little bit shorter than the book+errata ,which I have. the srd is nice but it doesn't always go into as much detail as the books do , as is the case here.
if you want I can type out word for word the whole section on adding a second class, from the epic handbook in case the chunk I submitted earlier isn't enough.

well in their section it's a bunch shorter and also mentions nothing on the handling of feats. I also have the 3.0 to 3.5 upgrade booklet thingee for the epic handbook and nothing changes there.

basically nothing else mentions what happens with feats from non epic classes taken at epic except in that paragraph. if there is something out there that says specifically that this is not how it works, I'd be most gratefull if you could show it too me, untill that, I'll take my errata/3.5 upgrade/actual book, that explicitly covers the subject over the anaemic free online version that covers a lot less.

I fail to see how that changes the list of feats wizard 5 or fighter 1 opens up. If the passage pas referenced is assumed to apply to 3.5 piscan is right. The SRD may have simply omitted it.

In any case, SCM is so feat tight that this rule shouldn't be coming into play at any point. Wiz 5 is for spontaneous divination.

"Original Poster", or occasionally "Original Post" - i.e., you.

If your DM is allowing LA buyoff, the Shadow Creature template (from Lords of Madness) will net you +2 (luck) to saves, Evasion, and a handful of other goodies, while obviating the need for the Collar of Umbral Metamorphosis.

I know epic feat are tight, but you may want to consider a Permanent Emanation (Planar Bubble) for always-on Shadow school maximization and the ability to ignore planar effects.

Also, even though it'll probably get dispelled, you could get an epic Bard to cast a few Modify Memorys on you, in case your VoP friend starts snooping into the disappearance of the orphan's ice-cream money.

I agree that SCM is feat tight and Wiz 5 is for spontaneous divination in the build suggested. However....

All class descriptions provide a list of bonus feats that characters must choose from. When a character has to choose from a list of bonus feats in the second class, he or she can also choose from the bonus epic feats described for each specific class.

Wizard 5 or Fighter 1 at epic levels clearly allows you to choose from the list of bonus epic feats for those classes...

do not waste an epic feat on planar bubble. Just cast multiple planar bubbles per day since the duration is 1 hour, 2 with a rod of extend. Plus if you do my hathran trick you will have plenty of 7th level slots, for now 3rd level slots are in reality a 7th level slot. You cannot take Epic Feats with Fighter Feats. There are no EPic Feats on the Fighter bonus feat list (go look).

Epic Feats are on the Epic Fighter Bonus Feat list. That is, on the feat list of someone with 21+ levels in Fighter.

It's been errata'd, stated, pointed out, and otherwise locked down. Taking normal Fighter levels does not get you bonus Epic Feats. It just gets you Bonus Feats. This won't work.

And I'd be bloody leery of that interpretation of Earth Spell and such nonsense which drives the SHadowcrafter. A lot of DM's will take a look at that rule interpretation and laugh, just like I did.

aelrynth, possibly you didn't look at all the posts in this thread.
it does specifically state in the ELH, for which I have the errata and 3.5 update. that whenever you get to choose a bonus feat from your second calss , after 20th level you can pick from the non epic feats you could normally pick or pick from the list of epic feats available from the class in the section below[that section being the bit on the epic versions of all calsses]. I wrote the exact quote earlier, and someone found it on the srd as well.

if there is a place with new errata or if you have some other kind of confirmation of it being otherwise I'd be most happy if you could show me it.
thanks

ok for ease I 'll write it again, it's on page 8 ELH and hasn't been changed by the errata given on the wotc site or the conversion to 3.5.
"when you have to choose from a list of bonus feats in your second class you can ALSO choose from bonus epic feats described for each specific class below"

at this point it is describing your second class in epic, i.e. a non epic version of a class.

I'm not sure this could be much clearer. it is tucked away slighlty awkwardly in the ELH , it took me a while to notice it was there.

someone found it on the srd as well.

Link to the SRD page? I'm seriously not seeing it, and this is the fourth time I've read through the entire epic section.

That explains it. I've been using the hypertext SRD, which doesn't have the line (second link). Thanks for the first link.

Why is it everyone has to chime in with I as a DM wont allow something that clearly works by the rules.....makes me frustrated

All DMs are different, here we have to work on the rules provided by the OP or the rules as they are written in the books. Earth spell/Heighten let you cast higher level spells.

If it needs to be houseruled that is up to each and every DM out there to decide on their own.

I'm not sure this could be much clearer. it is tucked away slighlty awkwardly in the ELH , it took me a while to notice it was there.

And there is your mistake.

'Second class' is referring to your levels in EpiC Fighter, EPic Bard, etc. It is not referring to levels in fighter, bard or barbarian (levels under 21).

In other words, you can use the Bonus feats from being an Epic Fighter (having 21+ levels of Fighter) to get normal Fighter feats, as well as Epic Fighter Feats. If you are Epic and take Fighter levels, you just get Fighter bonus feats, and there are no Epic feats on that list.

This HAS been addressed multiple times. It does NOT work the way you want it to, because that would be terminally silly. Fighter levels before 21 do not give Epic level bonus feats, regardless or not if the character is Epic themselves. You actually have to EpiC Fighter levels for this to occur.

"Whenever an epic character is allowed to pick up a feat as part of character level advancement, he or she can choose either a nonepic feat or an epic feat. All class descriptions provide a list of bonus feats that characters must choose from. When a character has to choose from a list of bonus feats in the second class, he or she can also choose from the bonus epic feats described for each specific class.

Sentence 1: Character level advancement. This refers to feats/3 levels. It does not say "bonus feats as part of class benefits" in this sentence.
2) All class descriptions provide a list of bonus feats. Fighter/1 has NO epic feats in its bonus feats, strangely enough (go check the PHB).
3) This whole example is positing that you are taking Epic level classes/PrC's, NOT that youa re taking base classes at Epic levels.

This Does Not Work. Go to the Epic Board and they will set you straight on it as well. IT has been answered before.

ok lets break this down.

"Whenever an epic character is allowed to pick up a feat as part of character level advancement, he or she can choose either a nonepic feat or an epic feat."

they could have just left it at this, so anytime you get a feat through your class gaining levels you can pick any non epic or epic one available. so at your third level of epic wizard you could pick up a non epic feat if you so desired.

so that statement is for "if you can get an epic feat you can also choose a non epic"

"All class descriptions provide a list of bonus feats that characters must choose from"

this is for when you gain a bonus feat i.e. at your 23 level of mage. as the only time all classes provide a list of bonus feats to choose from is at epic levels.
I don't recall a list of bonus feats for say barbarian or sorcerer or cleric do you? pre epic that is:P
so that chunk can only be aimed at the "epic" level classes.

"When a character has to choose from a list of bonus feats in the second class, he or she can also choose from the bonus epic feats described for each specific class."

so now, the only time a class can choose from a list of non epic feats is before they become epic. correct? I hope.
like for instance a fighter can choose from a list of feats, so can the mage.
if they could allready pick epic feats, they could pick any non epic feat as described above so this sentence would be redundant.

so , in summary.
the only time "every class" has a list of bonus feats is when they are epic.
which means everytime you could pick an epic feat you could also pick any non epic one.
which makes the last sentence redundant or it means you can take an epic feat from your classes epic list if you have to choose from a list of non epics and your over level 20.

theres also perfectly good fluff to suggest you can do this[new world view from getting past the maazing threshhold of level 20] but thats more esoteric
and definatly more a point of view kinda thing.

so if you find a flaw in my reasoning point it out to me please.
thanks for your time.

also apart from all that, it seems pretty explicit that it is dealing with non epic versions of classes.
It says earlier in that paragraph that you don't gain the base attack or the saves from your second class.

the only time a class has base attack and saves is when the class is pre epic.

this makes it seem pretty clear when they are talking about your "second class" it means that class is "pre epic".

Can someone clear this up for me, please? I was under the assumption that you can only get up to 40th Caster Level Maximum with the increase from Circle Magic. If you are already say a 20th Level caster don't you cap out when you use 20 levels worth of bonus spells to raise your caster level to the maximum 40? Or does it just completely stack on...as in adding an additional 40 levels on top of the caster's 20 making for 60. I have read the circle magic rules in FR and DMG 3.5 and I am finding it still unclear...

What about the fighter feat variant for wizards? Improved Initiative instead of Scribe Scroll sounds juicy.

Also, what of Master Specialist? You can seemingly suck more goodies from that.
