Level 8 campaign (only level 7 cash, 19k), party atm consists of Me (a Monk) and 2 casters (Wizard and Warmage). Lack of a high AC frontliner is disturbing so I'll be changing character. However, being reluctant to play a BSF I decided to use this guide and fleshed it out to a level 8... However, it has no sort of ideas for equipment for that low a level, most if the stuff is way out of price range

So here's char, feel free to suggest improvements on the char as well as suggesting some equipment... I've done searches to try and find equipment but nothing's come up.

Character

Fire Elf Abjurant Champion 3, Duskblade 5

Str: 10
Dex: 18
Con: 14
Int: 16
Wis: 12
Cha: 6

Fort: +8
Ref: +7
Will: +6
BaB: +8

Feats
Combat Casting
Point Blank Shot
Weapon Finesse
Weapon Focus (Longbow)

Can wear up to medium armour, can cast up to level 2 Arcane.

Try getting into Knight of the Raven (Expedition to Castle Ravenloft) using Favored Soul for even more fun...

I don't see much benefit in combining Abjuant Champion and Duskblade. Straight Duskblade 8 would be preferable. If you want a Prc, Sand Shaper or Mage of the Arcane Order would be better.

More Constitution!

I'll try and work out what stat to lower for more Con, if I'm honest I was really hoping to get more con but the rest of the stats seemed more important

PLAY A CLERIC!. Theirs your frontline fighter and healer.

Simply put, no. I don't want to be a cleric because I'm wanting to try out new things.

Try getting into Knight of the Raven (Expedition to Castle Ravenloft) using Favored Soul for even more fun...

Will look into this

I don't see much benefit in combining Abjuant Champion and Duskblade. Straight Duskblade 8 would be preferable. If you want a Prc, Sand Shaper or Mage of the Arcane Order would be better.

For later levels I get full caster level progression due to Martial Arcanist, whilst still being able to improve my BaB.

Thanks for the replies guys, keep them coming :D

Abjurant champion is always good, but what do you need martial arcanist for? Maybe you're thinking to go eldritch knight? you'd be better off with full duskblade.
Or do you want to take levels in fighter? If so maybe you should look into something different from duskblade, something like wiz/fighter/abj champ, or sorc/pal/abj champ: your spell selection would be much better (you'd gain access to spells like wraithstrike) while keeping a reasonably high caster level.

I second the suggestion to rise con: can't you talk you DM into letting readjust your stats?

More importantly: you seem to be focused on archery. Are you aware that the channeling ability of the duskblade works only with melee attacks? If you want to be an arcane archer there are better ways than to be a duskblade (for example being an arcane archer to begin with, multiclassing wiz/sorc and fighter/ranger).

Thinking of going for full arcane archer as per the link in the first post.

Don't need to talk to GM, this char hasn't been put into play yet so I can still mess around with it. What would you suggest lowering to raise Con? I'm thinking Strength for if I'm going to be ranged but I have a feeling I had it that high for a reason, just can't remember what...

The archery focus is for when I get level 2 Arcane Archer and can imbue arrows, then I can use the spellcasting to do funky stuff. I believe the Duskblade was in as it was easiest to get into Abj Champion and keep full BaB and get a few extra little helpers here and there. It also means if I end up in close combat I can switch to a melee weapon and still channel spells at them (some of the equipment I take may be to make switching from ranged -> melee easier, gloves of storing is suggested in the guide)

These are all good tips you guys are coming up with, keep them coming!

Main points so far:

Raising con, what to lower? Str is my opinion.
Equipment, I'll need a decent weapon and then possibly some handy utensil stuff (gloves of storing maybe, though expensive with only 19k to spend)

ok for this, i agree that raising Con and Lowering Str is the best idea, since Fire Elves get(+2 Dexterity, -2 Constitution, +2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma), but you dont need that high of an Int....try this instead:

Fire Elf (+2 Dexterity, -2 Constitution, +2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma)

Duskblade 5/ Abjurant Champion 3

Assuming 32pt buy

10 Str(10)
20 Dex(16 +2 Racial +2 lvl)
14 Con(16 -2 racial)
16 Int(14 +2 Racial)
12 Wis(12)
6 Cha(8- 2 racial)

i find a more balanced stat array works better... this will keep your Will save up as well as helping Spot and Listen checks

Feats:
Combat Casting
Point Blank Shot
Weapon Finesse
Weapon Focus (Longbow)

and since you are going into Arcane Archer.... try this:

carnivore, as ever you're a legend.

Convinced me that str will go to 10 and con to 12. It's 28point buy so I'm going to leave wis at 8. Only have 19k to spend (we're level 8 buy level 7 cash, blargh) so will cut down somewhat on the alchemical, but the rest looks solid. Thanking you very much

with a 28pt buy id suggest this:

10 Str(10)
18 Dex(14 +2 Racial +2 lvl)
14 Con(16 -2 racial)
16 Int(14 +2 Racial)
12 Wis(12)
6 Cha(8- 2 racial)

reducing Dex only looses +1 hit ..... but Wis 12 gives +1 to Will saves, Spot, Listen, Sense Motive, Survival, as opposed to -1 to all of those... it will be easy to boost dex.... but the Skills and Saves will give more options in the Game

for only 19000gp.... try this:

6300gp +1 Serrenwood Elvencraft Longbow
2100gp +1 Mithral Chain Shirt
320gp Masterwork Rapier
1800gp Efficient Quiver
4000gp... +2 Gloves of Dexterity

2000gp...Handy Haversack....very useful for his entire career
750gp Healing vest

200gp......2x War Ponies(trained)...one to be riden, one for carrying supplies...both are combat ready and can fight
150gp......6x Guard Dogs(trained).....trained for various things

+miscelaneous stuff

Sounds good, I'll reduce the dex... I reckon I can live with the 1 less to hit

That equipment looks nice too, and I have a whole bunch of animals to be our front line :D

Just checking, is Mithril really needed. Due to Duskblade I can wear medium armour without arcane spell failure?

The extra Max Dex will be useful at later levels but for right now my dex mod is +4 which is the chain shirts max.

Mithral only adds 1000gp to the cost of a Chain Shirt... might as well get it... but it could be used for something else.... since it is not absolutely needed

I cant find a Healing Vest in any book or google search, I found the armour property healing which costs 32,000/24,000/8,000 so guessing that's not it :/

EDIT: Found an item called Healing Belt for 750gp, thinking it's the same thing so taking it :D

you are correct... it should be Healing Belt from Magic Item Compendium
