Lich LA question

Apr 03, 2008 15:59:04 I am playing a Spellscale Sorcerer in a current campaign, and I am planning to become a Lich. My question is, when I have become a Lich, do I have to take the Level Adjustment? I realize that you don't lose levels, but would I not gain levels until I had gotten enough experience to bypass the LA? If so, isn't Lich therefore quite bad for casters as it means a CL hit and delayed spell levels unless you wait to take it until you have 9th-level spells?

100% correct!

Or just play a Dread Necromancer instead of Sorcerer - they become a Lich at 20th level for free.

Apr 03, 2008 16:19:05 Even if your DM allowed that, you would get crushed so hard by the epic spells you SHOULD be casting at that point. Have you looked at palemaster(LM) and uhhh.... desert lich? (sand)

Yes, what else would be the purpose of the Level Adjustment in the first place...?

Dry Lich, from Sandstorm. If you get it by taking 10 levels of Walker in the Waste, you arguably don't get the LA.

Arguably.

It's one of those cases where I can understand DMs who don't agree - even if RAW they might be wrong. Even though I think the +5 for the dry lich is too much. (Just as much as the +4 for normal lich.)

You're paying the opportunity cost of not taking IoSV, Incantrix or the dozen other good PrCs for an arcane caster prior to Epic. So I think it's appropriate.
Is Walker in the Wastes even full caster progession? If not, then every lost caster level (almost) balances the loss of one LA. After which, opportunity cost should make up for the rest.
