| #1gamer91919Jun 28, 2011 19:25:08 | Hey everybody, just looking for a lvl 20 build for a thief-turned-pirate. He needs to be able to hold his own in a challenge (He will be the only non arcanist in the group). I would like to make sure he has some nifty tricks to get out of trouble as he will likely be used as a scout often. I have been thinking of using invisible blade, shadowdancer, or scarlet corsair. as im digging the feint attacks(with sneak attacks) and the shadow jump. I am looking for something that fits the concept, a stealthy thief type, who is able to fight effectively, that can become perhaps a captain of his own ship. I am primarely having trouble finding any build that can survive a little trouble while still being sneaky, theaving, and elusive. Information on character: RACE: Aventi(from stormwrack) STAT ROLLS: 15,16,8,13,11,10 None are currently assigned. Thanks in advance everyone! |

Fighter 2/Rogue 3/Dread Pirate 10/Menacing Brute 5 (If you can, get your DM to give a waiver on race requirement.) BAB - +17, +5d6 sneak attack. (or smaller sneak attack and some bard style bonuses) Lots of piratey intimidation themes going on. The rogue levels can make you sneakie enough. Leadership is a sweet bonus thrown in. Good skills at every level except your fighter ones. Not even close to broken, and so you won't have to worry about DM intervention. Definatley has the captain of his own material. Use two weapons, dual short swords, dual daggers, or something along those lines. Stats - Dex > Str > Con > Int > Cha > Wis. But really those have a LOT of wiggle room. Just noticed the race. Are you set unchangeable and demanding it? That race is seriously not good, and it gets in the way of the menacing class. Thats really the most interchangable class though, I think it just fits. |

Does an aventi's human blood trait qualify him for the able learner feat? It's prerequisite is “human or doppelganger,” and an aventi “is considered human” “for all effects related to race.” A rough description of that feat is that anything that's a class skill for you once is a class skill forever. That'd allow you to take any class with good skill points for most of your levels without worrying about the skill list. |
| #4gamer91919Jun 28, 2011 23:25:19 | I am pretty attached to the aventi race due to my written backstory relationship with the rest of the party... We put a lot of effort into a interrelated backstory that was deep and engaging... Though kind of extensive. All 3.0 and 3.5 books are allowed except ToB. The setting is Eberron, highly sea based, though we will also be at port enough to not be entirely focused on the ocean. We have bursts of battle in campaigns but generally it is also very heavily story and RP based. The able learner will work on the aventi (after asking DM). Thanks for the Idea Krusk! I need to take a look at those PrC's since I am not familiar with the first and never even heard of the second. If anyone has any more idea's that I could look over I would greatly appreciate it! EDIT: I could change the race if it opens up a more fun build. But I would rather not change the backstories since the GM is using our backstory as fuel for the game. |
| #5dmverdandiJun 29, 2011 6:59:40 | Hmm... Okay. 1 Lion totem ferocity barbarian, Sneak thug 5/Factotum 5/Legendary Leader 5/Legendary Captain 4 Focus on leadership feats. Leadership, improved cohort, MIGHT MAKES RIGHT, Rulership, Also get stormheart. Able learner as well. Screw charisma, Boost strength, dex, and Con to the stratosphere. This guy isn't a monster, persay, but has the ability to do little tricks every now and then. He is also a very strong inspirational leader. Using a straight melee is brave, and I commend you for it. The alternative to this is barb1/factotum9/chameleon 10. Anything you want. That ten can even be switched with 5/5 legendary leader and captain, or you could just use factotum 20. You can still get some of those leadership feats, get yourself a crew, and a Mr.Smee. Make him useful this time. Make him into an artificer. |

| #7gamer91919Jun 29, 2011 16:20:42 | Thanks for the location! That combination looks very fun. However I dislike the orc/ogre race. I guess I dont "Have" to be aventi, but I would like to be a ocean based race.... |
| #8tr0llmanJun 29, 2011 17:19:31 | Thanks for the location! That combination looks very fun. However I dislike the orc/ogre race. Let's just get it over with: YOU'RE GOING TO BE THE WEAKEST MEMBER OF THE PARTY. Since you're looking for a lvl 20 build, I'll assume that you intend to start right at the top, not at level 1. With that in mind (the fact that you're not going to be in the same league as your teammates), you can feel free to play whatever race you want. Your request is very vague, but as far as I can tell, you want to talk smack, but when chips are down, you blend into a shadow, then come out from another shadow and murder people. The usual cheese for that build is Shadow Pounce, available in two Forgotten Realms PrCs. |
| #9gamer91919Jun 29, 2011 17:45:39 | Thanks for the location! That combination looks very fun. However I dislike the orc/ogre race. First we are starting at 6 and i want to have direction for progression, second im still pretty new to d&d, third you are assuming I want to be some uber powerful killer, fourth I want fun and utility for a character that can fight when he has to but will almost always try to escape(unless of course his friends are in danger). I am sorry for being vague, I am not familiar w/ the system and am basically saying what i want to do in hopes that somone will be so kind as to point me in a good direction. I appreciate your attempt at honesty very much, but I feel you are jumping to conclusions about me as a player. |
| #10dmverdandiJun 30, 2011 0:02:34 | Thanks for the location! That combination looks very fun. However I dislike the orc/ogre race. MMMHmmm. Starting to sea what is going on here, matey. You are new, so you head into CharOP, so you can get some help on a character. Good Idea. But you have to let us help. One problem here is that a CharOperator begins to understand that... Classes are ends to a mean. To be honest, what they do is FAR less important than HOW. I could reflavor anything into anything else. Flavor is mutable. Mechanics... Those are the ticket. This guy wasn't attacking you. Not at all. He was helping. You have been thinking about a character in your head so deeply that it has become conceptual, but concepts are observances of events, not the dynamics. The color green is a cognative calculation/interpretation. Without eyes, there is no green. Electromagnetism exists outside of human perception, however. It is the cause, rather than the effect. To translate what you want, we must find the CAUSE of what makes you a pirate/swashbuckler, and one good enough to be a hero worth note, Not the title. The title is the effect. Does the pirate class make you a pirate? No. Stealing stuff makes you a pirate. Robbing people at sea, Being lawless, or even worse, working for a corrupt government, and basically regulating sea trade and territory through your own interpretation. That makes you a pirate. Classes are like educational degrees. The more flexible the degree, the more applications and broader the education. The swashbuckler class means you for some reason through personal, vocational, or educational means learned how to fence. A codified rule of fighting which makes dueling easier. The pirate classes represent a certain idealized education of what a pirate SHOULD be, but a pirate's life is about freedom, not constricted education. A pirate class is someone following what others define as a pirate. It's like being a student at the school of hard knocks, to get a PHD in asskickery. Might work, or you might be focusing on the means rather than the end. If this is single class progression and without anything crazy happening, I say take Factotum 20. After all, versatility is and should be your primary focus. Take able learner so you can do anything that takes mundane skill. Load up on diplomacy, use magic device, diplomacy for friends, intimidation for enemies, and any skill the srd says a pirate should have. Then he is already archtypal. Learn about skill tricks. Get some followers VIA Leadership. And get a useful cohort. Have them as your crew. Use a cool exotic weapon (doesn't have to be *exotic*, just interesting... OHH! The DMG has rules for flintlock firearms and grenades!) Steal stuff and Command the seas. Also, Item Familiars are cool. Get yourself some pirate jewelery. Most of all, stop thinking a pirate is in a class. That is an educational tract, but everyone doesn't get properly educated. Some have natural tallent. A pirate is anyone who says he is, and puts a musket to the head to anyone who says he isn't. |
| #11gamer91919Jul 01, 2011 14:40:11 | @DMVerdandi You sir, speak my language. I appologize as well to tr0llman, I took that more personally that I should have, I just care less about being powerfull and more about being sneaky, tricky, yet able to at least handle an enemy without getting squished immediately. Thanks everyone! |
