#1 natenate Sep 22, 2008 14:43:17	I'm trying to find the feat that allows a caster to spend multiple lower-level spell slots to cast a higher level. The game I'm currently playing in uses the Spellpoints variant from UA/SRD. I intend to use that feat to apply metamagic feats that would end up taking higher level spell slots than the highest level spells I can cast. I was wondering though, how would that feat interact with spellpoints? IIRC it says you can basically spend X 1st-level spell slots to cast an X-level spell. Normally an X level spell costs 2X-1 spellpoints to cast, but a 1st level spell "slot" costs 1 spellpoint, so would having that feat make all spells simply cost spellpoints equal to their spell level?
#2 carnivore Sep 22, 2008 15:08:27	the feat: Versatile Spellcaster: Races of the Dragon P101: You can use two lower-level spell slots to cast a spell one level higher. the thing is... the Spellpoint system is a very balanced System that resists abuse... it is basicly identical to Psionics.... since your CL limits the number of Spellpoints you can use on a single Casting..... Versatile Spellcaster would have to be adapted similar to the Psionic Feat: Overchannel to be balanced ... but i would avoid it if possible the other problem you will run into.... your character does not "Know" spells of a higher level even if he could cast them... he hasnt learned them yet :D
#3 natenate Sep 22, 2008 15:26:22	The similarity between spellpoints and psionics is actually fairly limited. Your limit on spellpoints spent is not limited by your caster level, the only limitation based on your caster level is how high you can boost the caster level of your damaging spells. A 9th level Wizard could cast an Empowered Fireball (base 9 spellpoint cost) and pay an extra 4 spellpoints to make it count his caster level as 9 instead of 5, thereby paying 13 spellpoints for it but not going over the caster level limitation. But it looks like it won't work out like I'd hoped, since I was thinking that it would allow you to cast spells several levels higher than your highest level spells available. Thanks for clearing that up though, I must have looked in every book but that one trying to find it.
