Looking for Sorcerer Ideas (D20)

Hi everyone.

I'm playing in a campaign where I've chosen to be a Sorcerer of some sort, however I'm kind of stumped which route to take him.  I figured I'd lay out the rules and see what anyone else suggests.

 - Can only use PHB, PHBII, DM Guide and DM Guide II for the build.  No other splat books are allowed.
 - Character Level 3, Human Race
 - Looking for something beyond just a "blaster" style.
 - Stat numbers - 17, 16, 15, 13, 13, 12

What kind of character should I start with and what should I be aiming towards?  I figure somewhere around a level 10 optimization and everything else is gravy.

If anyone can help that would be great.  Thanks,

EDIT: Added Stats

I guess I should add that I did flip through the Optimization FAQ, but there wasn't much on Sorcerers themselves.

Level 10 optimization? Does the scale go to 10 or 100? 5?

General sorcerer advice.

Take one blasting spell at most each level. Take spells that are useful at all levels. Good level 1 examples include animate rope, expeditious retreat, grease and ray of enfeeblement. Things that don't do direct damage, or allow saves.

Also, prestige class into something with full casting ASAP. Sorcerers don't have class features, and those are handy. Fatespinner is generic and good enough for most use. (EW saw DMG is the only source for those... ummm archmage is great, take levels in that and then don't bother with the others).

Your signature was indeed a great read!  Thanks very much.

I was aiming for the campaign finishing in the 10-12 range, thus I figured I'd aim for a build that was effective all the way through till ten at least (regarding feat selection/spell selection/class selection and such).

What is the Archmage from?  I can't find it in the DMG...?

Thanks for the advice!

That's odd, because you'd expect Archmage to be right in front of Assassin in the DMG.

Is it in the DM Guide 3.5?  I have the 3.0 version it looks like and in front of Assassin is Arcane Archer...

I guess I'll have to get my buddy's book and take a look at the class when I see him next.  Thanks again.

You know it's available online at the Hypertext d20 SRD, right?

Spells:
Grease (for being the best 1. level arcane BFC spell)
Charm Person (for utility use)
Enlarge Person (to let your BSF buddy threaten a much, much larger area)

Feat suggestions:
Bonded familiar from PHBII.
Apprentice (Spellcaster) from DMGII
Scribe Scroll, to avoid running out of spells
Craft Wondrous Item
And, as always, Improved Initiative.

Got you, level 10 character. For whatever reason, I thought you meant "Level 10 optimization" as in like 10/10 in power or something. Not level 10 character.

You won't be able to get into archmage, its needs super high levels. 12 minimum. Sorry.

Minimum of level 13, as you have to be able to cast 7th level spells.
