An idea i've been kicking around for the last two months is for the following.
* Large Creature or if DM willing Powerful Build Race with no LA.
* Fighter 16/War Hulk 4
* Overpowering Attack

Combat Expertise
Deadly Defense
Improved Trip
Knockdown

WF: Spiked Chain
WS: Spiked Chain
Melee Weapon Mastery

cleave
power attack
great cleave

combat reflexes
Robilar's Gambit

Obvously not in that order. Still trying to work it out. But the basic strategy is always use Overpowering Attack combined with War Hulk Cleave ability which will automatically cause a trip attempt to incur on all targets via Knockdown.

Spiked chain builds are practically archetypal to the CO forums, if you look in Surreal's "Some Handy Links for CO work" sticky, there are some. I'll go ahead and link them here. That post is very useful for finding old builds though.

Good luck with the wicked powers of the gatling tripper!

A good, easy build is Goliath Barb 1 / Fighter 1. With Wolf Lodge Totem, Improved Trip and EWP: Spiked Chain. You'll need some flaws, too. Take the goliath barbarian racial sub for Mountain Rage, and you actually go Large when raging. Note that this does actually double your reach, getting even more AoOs. You should have about a +15 or so to trip with a ECL of 3.

This could be further optimized, but it's already a bucket of cheese just by going goliath.

Human with Jotunbrud would work too, but you wouldn't have access to Wolf Lodge in that case, IIRC.

The goliath mountain rager is a good base to build a solid tripper out of. Get some extra rage from somewhere at some point (feats, items) because you'll want more fighter levels for more feats like Curling Wave Strike, Robilar's Gambit (or Karmic Strike, or Defensive Throw) among others.

I can only use human, no outside races or classes. Feats are ok though.

what is Jotunbrud, and what book?

Jutunbrud is a feat that makes you count as large for a lot of things. It is very similiar to the Powerful Build ability of goliaths and half-giants. I think it was from the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, and probably reprinted in Player's Guide to Faerun. I don't think there is anything preventing you from taking both Jotunbrud and a Berzerker Lodge feat, either.

They are both Regional Feats, and as such can't both be taken. Berserker Lodge = Rasheman, Jotunbrud = ...somewhere else, I think.
