| #1clockworkrevengeApr 17, 2008 22:32:55 | Ok, in an upcoming game im playing in, im playing a wizard (grey elf), and his character focus is on foribidden knowledge, so my DM is altering the Loremaster class with some more bizzare tricks (think alienist + loremaster). Including which would be the maddness abilitiy. However, i was wondering, what sort of wizard build i should make so that i can be a powerfull/active wizard. Im not even exactly sure what i want to do, something blasty/powerfull/dynamic/is-going-to-be-dramatic, but will still mesh with the this alternate loremaster... c'mon boys, impress me! |
| #2archerpwrApr 17, 2008 22:36:11 | Blue link in my sig. Thanks. |
| #3logicninjaApr 17, 2008 22:37:25 | Wizard 7/Loremaster 10/Archmage 3 is core and plenty strong. |
| #4clockworkrevengeApr 17, 2008 22:39:21 | Ya but im thinking exactly what sort of wizard... i was kinda hoping to use every trick in the book to game metamagic... sense i love it. Any ideas? |
| #5clockworkrevengeApr 17, 2008 22:41:24 | Blue link in my sig. Thanks. Lol... very subtle. Ok im looking to be a very active, dynamic wizard, and trying to figure out what, and if to specialize, focus specialize, variants, etc. Im especially interested in trying to get as much metamagic use as possible for as cheap as possible. This character has access to all WoTC DnD books, especially UA. |
| #6logicninjaApr 17, 2008 22:54:35 | Lol... very subtle. Incantatrix, in the Player's Guide to Faerun, is the PrC to take for all your metamagic needs. It's also the most powerful prestige class in the game that isn't Planar Shepherd. |
| #7clockworkrevengeApr 17, 2008 22:56:37 | Incantatrix, in the Player's Guide to Faerun, is the PrC to take for all your metamagic needs. Thats good to know but i am looking specificly to combine flavor with utility, the im at least going to max out levels of Loremaster... so im not really looking for a prestige class (other than to fill the three level gap after wizard7/loremaster10, im more looking for builds involving how to tweak those seven levels of wizard. I dont have access to the PGF, could you (in breif) detail the incantrix or show me where i can get some info on it? my DM is allowing me/is altering the Loremaster class to be flavor tweaked to be more into forbidden knowledge, and is giving it the maddness ability + more powerful secrets; so i may try and see if he'll allow me to steal from other PrC's abilities and transform them into secrets for the loremaster. |
| #8WyvernhandApr 17, 2008 23:07:06 | A funny thing about Loremasters is their ability to learn a language...ANY language. So, what's the best language to pick? DRUIDIC! lol. Now you can cuss those nansy pantsed treehuggers to incite their rage upon you before you wtfpwn them simply because you chose to write wizard at the top of your sheet. Check out the Surealodex for handy guides for wizards. Of notable mention are those by Treantmonk20 and LogicNinja. They give you a rundown of some of the +/- of different PrCs and more specifically, spells! Spells are your primary class feature, and can make two wizards more different than night and day. Choose wizely, and you will win, period. Choose poorly, and you'll probably still win, it'll just take another round or 2. |

| #10WyvernhandApr 17, 2008 23:15:24 | http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=482636 There, the Surealodex. Top sticky on the front page. He made everything easy to search for, just a ctr + f away. There are links there to the 2 guides I mentioned, as well as all of Treantmonk20 and others school by school evaluation of almost every spell ever written. Or should I get a spoon? |

You can find a guide to wizards by a charming and all-around wounderful individual behind this fine, well-crafted link. |

Faaantastic i dont suppose i could come to you for a critique/peaching of the variant of the loremaster (forbidden lore) im working on? |
| #13phaedrusxyApr 17, 2008 23:45:44 | The best thing about loremaster is that it gets Use Magic Device as a class skill. The best thing about that is that your familiar gets to use your class skill ranks. So give your (pseudonatural) little buddy a wand or two, and you just got some free actions every round. |
| #14fun_at_funerals_dupApr 18, 2008 5:23:00 | Not sure about power building but if your DM likes the whole forbidden knowledge bit, then Divine Oracle should play right into that. Gives you the Oracle Domain, a Scrying Bonus, some other benefits, one of them being Evasion in light armor. Find a piece of armor with the right enchantments that reduce ASF and you're good. Requires a feat, but you can make up for that with Loremaster. It's a pretty good 2 level dip. This is more for flavor, really. |

QFT, I don't see too many people who take levels in Loremaster who DON'T take 2 levels in DO. The trick is to take SF: Know (Religion) to satisfy your SF: Know (Any) requirement of Loremaster. Then you recover that single feat expenditure from one of Loremaster's Secrets, which is nice because you can literally claim that feat whenever you want, which makes it great for feats that have high prereqs like Elven Spell Lore. |

| #17clockworkrevengeApr 18, 2008 10:18:04 | Please post the Loremaster alterations when you get the chance. Ill give you what the DM has approved so far: --Maddness: As per the Doomdreamer with this exception: the "maddness" stat is applied to whatever stat the PC uses to cast spells. It remains a penalty to will saves and wisdom skills. (Maddness + Intelligence = Virtual intelligence for purposes of determining spell save DCs and bonus spells; Maddness - Will Save;Maddness - Wisdom Skills) This is added to level one loremaster. --Instant Mastery: Choose a skill you have no ranks in, you immediatly gain 5 skill points in the skill and it becomes a class skill. Can be chosen multiple times, for different skills. --Deeper Maddness: +2 maddness. Can be chosen mutliple times. --New Found Arcana: You instantly learn any spell from any spell list as though your [spell casting class levels] + [loremaster levels] = the coorisponding class level to the spell list you choose from. This secret can be chosen multiple times. |

This secret can be chosen multiple times. Um...Wow? Can we say....Heal? Blasphemy? MIRACLE? Christ, wow....thats really strong. Go poach off the paladin, hunter, and adept spell lists to abuse this bad boy. Wow...my head is still spinning from the possibilities of abuse for this bad boy. Jeeze....If your DM approves this, take it as many times as you can....Holy hell... The madness one is kind of cool too, since DCs are difficult to raise past a certain point. The need to make will saves can be completely negated at level 15 with the learning of the Mind Blank spell. |

Jeeze....If your DM approves this, take it as many times as you can....Holy hell.. For most of the Secrets that can be taken multiple times, their cost rises by at least three, and that would be the most expensive secret, so, at best you'd get that twice. Most of these updated secrets are preliminairy. Not all secrets will be able to be taken multiple times, (i.e.: the save bonus secrets arnt stackable), and their costs usually rises. The DM and i havnt gotten it all pounded out quite yet. Im actually more interested in whoring metamagic than poaching from other spelllists anyway >.>; |

Recaster, Arcane Disciple, and plenty of other things already let you do this. If those spells aren't overpowered for whoever casts them normally, they why would they be for the wizard? It's a good ability, but it's not as crazy as you're making it sound. |
