Luck Feats take 1

My group and I are about to begin the “city of the spider queen module” and have been asked to write up 10th level characters. In most games I play a diviner, with huge numbers of scrolls, wands and items to fix any problems we have outside of battles, and everyone else plays pure damage dealing psychopaths m(warlock blaster, frenzied berserker etc).

For this game, I really wanted to try something different. I wanted to pull the most I could out of luck feats, and specifically the fortunes friend. So I designed this guy.

Beguiler6/Fortunes friend 4
Cl8 human
Feats:
1: lucky start
H: spell focus (illusion)
3: unbelievable luck
6: make your own luck
9: tempting fate
FF: Good karma
FF: Survivors luck

Total: 9 luck rerolls
4th level spells
1/day don’t die!

Skills:
UMD, Concentration, Bluff, diplomacy, disable device, open lock, slight of hand, spell craft, search, listen and spending other skills on kill tricks, smatterings of others.

Now, this guy is obviously not a powerhouse. He’s got great skills (6+ int), and will be going for skill monkey/face/battlefield controller/backup healer (wands and scrolls).

This is the best method for using luck feats I could imagine. Anyone have any ideas for improvements?

I did a 'combat' divine sorcerer/fortune's friend/Luckstealer (Strongheart halfling) with all luck feats... suffered from lack of good spell list but was fun to play. Your idea looks way more functional though...

I have a build i'm hoping to use soem day witha couple of luck feats in it. I picked Lucky Start, Survivor's Luck, and Unbelievable Luck. It was a Factotum/wizard type, so "go first and win" was an obvious route, and I wanted some security on saves too.

Personally, I figure that saves are where luck rerolls really come in handy.

I kind of went the same route as Naanomi except instead of sorcerer I used Beguiler. Again I was on my finish more then one PrC kick but I really liked this one. Beguiler 5/Fortune's Friend 5/Luckstealer 10. I don't have the build on me it's on my laptop but you lose I think 3 caster levels so you cast as a level 17 beguiler you get something like 9 or 10 luck rerolls by level 20 and with luckstealer you can use the stealing power to fuel luck feats.

I thought about beguiler, but opted against it in the end... mostly because I wanted access to the Luck domain {triple re-rolls is ultra lucky!}, and sorcerer was the only "Cha only" caster I could come up with to give me access to it. Being a charisma caster seemed to fit so well, 'just born with it' extends the idea of 'born lucky' well... AND I get a Parrot familiar!

Might want to add some Fatespinner later on, for more casting and extending BAD luck to your enemies! Would fit in well flavor-wise, and is quite a good PrC in its own right, too.

One thought without much spoilering:

You are going to suffer SO bad with a Beguiler in that module. Enemies consist of undead (at least 50%), beings with SR (drow in particular, another +2 vs Will), and constructs.

I like the concept though. You should consider going rogue instead of beguiler, and choose the alternative class feature 'penetrating strike' (allowing to deal half of your SA damage to beings immune to it, it is in Dungeonscape IMO).

Another option is a bard, specializing in buffing/music who may come handy. You can use the afformentioned PRC, and might add Sublime Chord, Lyric thaumaturgist, Virtuoso as well.

second the idea of playing a bard or cleric buffer instead of a beguiler in city of the spider queen, there are way too many enemies immune to most of the spells on the beguiler list for you to pull your weight.

Thanks for all the input guys. In the end, i talke to my dm, and e confirmed that a beguiler was not going to have a whole lot of fun in this campaign. So ive changed to an effigy master, and will set about flatening everyhting that is imune to beguilers with large fists of steel. Thanks again for all your input.

Gestalt luck based build... sorcerer (Domain)/fortune's friend/luck thief//wilder (Mantled)/Archanic initiate... Born lucky indeed!

Good luck, zedorland.

For those who may peruse this thread later, the Pride domain might be a good choice for a luck-based character. The granted power lets you re-roll a natural 1 on any saving throws you make (once per save attempt). This could help in preventing your from spending your daily luck re-rolls on such things.
