Magic Items for an 18th Level Wizard

So I'm currently playing an 18th Level Wizard, well technically he's an 11th Level Conjurer, 3rd Level Human Paragon, and 4th Level Archmage, in a Forgotten Realms game. I'm looking to get him some magical items and I have about 328,000 gp with the only rule being I can't spend more than 82,000 on a single item.

I'm looking for advice mainly because there is just so much stuff and I'm not sure what stacks with what. I haven't played DnD long and have never played a character above 10th level before.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh some information that might be important... He's a follower of Mystra, he's currently being hunted so he's looking for things to protect him from scrying and other magic, he loves to teleport, and he's neutral good.

#1 magic item resource

As to what stacks with what.... the answer is almost invariably "does not stack if it has the same name". So an Armor bonus from Chain Shirt stacks with a Shield bonus from a buckler, or a Deflection bonus from a Ring of Protect, but wouldn't stack with an Armor bonus from Bracers of Armor.

Same Name = Does Not Stack. Make sense? Here are the exceptions.

"Dodge" bonuses always stack with themselves. "Circumstance" bonuses do too. Unnamed bonuses stack, unless they're from the same source, however you define that. Otherwise, things only stack if they specifically say they do. The "Enhancement" bonus to AC from weapons (including armor spikes) with the Defending quality is a specific example.

The Cube of Force is a bit expensive, but incredible for high level mages. It is in the DMG (and SRD).

Thanks for the link and the explanation of stacking bonuses. They were both most helpful! Though I do admit I was hoping for things a little more Wizard focused, I did find some useful items like Boccob's Blessed Books.

Caster's Glove is useful. DMGII, though may have been updated in MiC. 20k, functions as a Glove of Storing, but any usable magic items inside can be activated by a mental action - so you can drink a poiton or read a scroll without draw AoOs, and your magical implements like Wands and Staffs can't be disarmed or sundered.

The headband of conscious effort I think is in the Bunko's thread. It lets you make a Concentration check instead of a Fort. save once per day, IIRC.

Look at these: Blessed Book (obviously), Third Eye: Penetrate (MIC 142), Deathguardian Bracers (MIC 93), Ring of Arcane Might (CA), Ring of Enduring Arcana (CM 126), Magical Locations

A Ring of Counterspells (DMG) with Greater Dispel Magic stored is a very wise investment.

A Ring of Freedom of Movement (DMG) is a MUST. No excuse not to have this.

Check out the Raiment of Four item set in the Magic Item Compendium, as well as the Runestaffs (I recommend Transmutation).

Dont think it works like that. You store a spell and only if that single spell is aimed at you, it will discharge and counter the one targeted on you. Dispel Magic and the other flavours of dispel works fine when you use them as a ready action vs any other according to spell discription but not in this case AFAIK.

Perhaps it'd be a wise investment because, as a buffed spellcaster, people will be casting Greater Dispel Magic at you?

So it will work against targetted dispel, and not area dispel - still a good investment.

Okay, so I'm wondering if this would work.

Robe of the Archmagi (+5 AC Armor Bonus)
Amulet of Natural Armor +5
Runestaff of Power (Inside a Casting Glove) +2 Luck Bonus to AC

Now, would a ring of protection work?

Yep.

Awesome.
Hrm.. now it's a toss up.. Ring of Protection +5, A Ring of Counterspells with Greater Dispel Magic stored, A Ring of Freedom of Movement, Ring of Arcane Might, or Ring of Enduring Arcana.

Any thoughts or suggestions as to which two I should pick?

Get a Hand of Glory (8k, DMG), and you can wear three. :D

The spell Freedom of Movement lasts 10 min/level. You could bribe the party cleric into casting that on you before encounters. I don't find it essential, myself. There are plenty of other ways to avoid/escape the things it provides protection against, as a wizard.

Follow the rule in the DMG and MIC and combine a few into three rings, and use a Hand of the Mage.

First (most expensive) ability is x1, second most expensive ability is x3/4, and every other ability is x1/2.

Otherwise, burn feats on Forge Ring and Extra Rings (ECS). That would let you wear 5 rings combined with the Hand. And there's a dagger in Arms & Equipment that 'wears' a ring for you, and as long as it's in your hand, you gain the benefit of the ring.

Can you enchant the Hand of Glory to have +6 Con? ^^

If you reread the rules there, they state it only works for items that don't take up a bodyslot - the most prominent example is a Staff.
However, the MiC states you can add "simple" enchantments on at no additional cost, so you can still stack on Protection +5 and such on without any extra costs.

In complete mage is a location that tripples the duration of a transmutation spell 1/day for like 2k gp. Damn good buy for metamagic rod extended shapechange.

I'm sure you can. I'm not sure how much it would cost. I haven't looked all that closely at the MiC rules for combining stuff.

Hand of Glory takes up the Amulet Slot, so it would be at no additional cost IIRC - a simple extra 36000gp.

I am referring to the initial crafting, and having the item have multiple similar abilities (meaning tied to the same body slot).

The only other mention of adding abilities, is for non-similar ones. And for upgrading an existing item.

It may be worthwhile to think through some no brainers first:

headband of int +6
5 selfcrafted scrolls of wish (for inherent bonus to int)
+1 Twilight Mithral chainshirt (no penalty, cheap ac and ability carrier)
githcraft MW buckler (no penalty, cheap ac and ability carrier)
Pearls of Power

Id like to also recommend blessed book its in the DMG. It seems like a little thing but it will save you alot of cash. Also check out page 140 of complete arcane and protect that spell book. The spell book is the single most important item you have magical or otherwise.
