| #1b3jsd73jfxMay 19, 2008 23:58:18 | Here's the build I'm looking at right now: Spellthief 1/Sorcerer 5/Spellwarp Sniper 3/Unseen Seer 10 Yes, I know about the bonuses from AT, but I don't care Either way, I was looking at other builds on here and noticed that one of them had both Practiced Spellcaster (Spellthief) and Practiced Spellcaster (Sorcerer) while still including the Master Spellthief feat. What would be the point in this? Wouldn't the Master Spellthief feat allow you to cast as a 19 Sorcerer while stealing spells as a 19 Spellthief. Now I know Unseen Seer gives the negatives to caster levels, but wouldn't you only need one Practiced Spellcaster on either of two class choices to make it nullify out? Also, any ideas on that last level, this character will go epic so another 7 or 8 levels would be fine too lol |
| #2operation_shoestringMay 20, 2008 2:49:39 | Here's the build I'm looking at right now: That;s only 19 levels. Too much Sorceror, not enough SS. Spellthief1/Sorceror4 is enough to get into Unseen Seer. And unless you have an epic progression or your DM makes you finish prestige classes, there's not really a terribly compelling reason to take 10 levels of Unseen Seer. Your last real class feature hits at 8, and 9 gives the boost to your weak saves. The SA die at 10 isn't worthwhile when you already have Hunter's Eye, and you have better things to take. Spellthief1/Sorceror4/Unseen Seer2/Spellwarp sniper5/Unseen Seer+7/Visionary Seeker1 Or Spellthief1/Sorceror4/Unseen Seer6/Spellwarp Sniper5/Divine Oracle4 Both these builds get Divination CL 24 for 8d6 from Hunter's Eye. |
| #3kuroimakenMay 20, 2008 2:57:36 | Wow, you're seriously making a build that gets defeated by a single 5th level spell, and only hits one target at a time to boot? You must be seriously brave! |

You must be seriously brave! Spellwarping is free, so it's not like it's hurting him. He can still cast other stuff, not just rays, mind. |
| #5kuroimakenMay 20, 2008 3:30:55 | Spellwarping is free, so it's not like it's hurting him. He can still cast other stuff, not just rays, mind. I suppose that's true. But Ray Deflection surely makes the class less than stellar. And like logicninja once said, anything is better than straight up Wizard 20 as long as you don't lose caster levels... |

And like logicninja once said, anything is better than straight up Wizard 20 as long as you don't lose caster levels... So let's get this straight: Enemy has Ray Deflection. Sneak attack with a WEAPON and steal it. Then go back to rays. Where is the problem? As a weapon I would recommend a Hellfire Crossbow (which you'll have to steal from an Orthon devil from FCII), since you can make touch attacks with it and it's not a ray, AND it deals Hellfire damage which is not reduced by anything. It also for some reason uses a move action to attack (so you can't full-attack with it). You only need to aquire Baatezu sub-type somehow. I'm not up date on the latest Fauxlymorph rules, so I don't know if you can get sub-types. SRD says you aquire Type and Subtype, I'm going with that right now. So the deal would be Otherworldly and then Polymorph to some kind of devil. Maybe there are some ways of getting ranged touch attacks with weapons that you could use for Sneak attacking, and stealing that naughty Ray Deflection. CORRECTION: Probably won't work, dammit. Ray Deflection doesn't only deflect rays, as it seems, since it specifies ranged touch attacks, including rays. Well, it also kills the Warlock, then. We're back down to (Gr.) Dispel Magic , or melee SA with Wraithstrike. |

Find the Target (anyone remember what book this was in) + regular shortbow + Greater invis. Seriously, with hunter's eye you should have at a decent amount of sneak attack. If he's blocking rays, put an arrow through his eye. If nothing else, it'll make him waste a turn putting up windwall. Or just slam him with a with a Melf's Unicorn Arrow. It's not a touch attack, but as a caster you should have a spell or two that boost your attack bonus. |

You do realize any caster can be destroyed by a well placed Dispel Magic or Antimagic Field? Therefore, according to your logic, every caster is "seriously brave" build. How about you post some criticism instead of just being pessimistic |

There are ways around Dispel and AF. ;) The best way around Ray Deflection is not using Rays. However, there is no reason this caster needs to be 100% ray dependant. Pick up a couple Battlefield Control or something to add versatility and you should be OK. |
| #10nicro007May 20, 2008 19:17:25 | I'm not sure if you would be allowed to use the generic spellcaster, but the following might be an interesting take on the idea. Generic Spellcaster 5 / Arcane Trickster 10 / Spellwarp Sniper 5 I haven't really looked deeply into the rules on picking up the ability Turn Undead, but it would be kind of slick to use Charisma to power the turns and your casting for DMM:persistent to boost your AB for your ray attacks. |
| #11dawnmorMay 20, 2008 20:50:13 | Just go swordsage 1/wizard 5/JPM 10/XXX Youll get maneuvers and 9th lvl spells. |
| #12operation_shoestringMay 21, 2008 1:04:19 | I'm not sure if you would be allowed to use the generic spellcaster, but the following might be an interesting take on the idea. WHY, FOR THE LOVE OF PELOR WOULD HE WANT TO DO THAT? AT sucks. Unseen seer is far better. And getting into AT with a generic Spellcaster means giving up both your bonus feats for SA die, which is a horrible waste. |

Perhaps not in this specific build, but in a lot of builds it provides the exact bonuses that people are looking for. You could easily find 10 fantastic builds in less than 30 minutes using AT |
| #14kuroimakenMay 26, 2008 3:52:08 | You do realize any caster can be destroyed by a well placed Dispel Magic or Antimagic Field? Therefore, according to your logic, every caster is "seriously brave" build. How about you post some criticism instead of just being pessimistic Oh, right. I'd forgotten that casters are stupid by nature and have never foreseen the need to bypass AMFs with well-placed Orb of X spells (or just about any conjuration spell, really. Toppling Wall of Iron on whoever's head, anyone?). How utterly, utterly silly of me! Seriously, though, you're talking about casters that for some inane reason are not wearing rings of counterspell among other things... Any caster with half a brain is either naturally protected against dispel (high CLs help) or "artificially" buffered against the same threat (via the already mentioned rings of counterspell). So yeah... a build that's 100% ray-dependant, when there are beauties like Ray Deflection around, is quite "brave" by my standards. Why would you want so many rays anyway? It's not like the best Wizard buffs aren't personal, and that whatever few touch attack spells you have to make you aren't better off using Spectral Hand for getting off anyway. Otherwise, it's either down to area spells or save-or-suck, which you probably wouldn't need in a ray because they can be targeted by line of sight alone. |

Otherwise, it's either down to area spells or save-or-suck, which you probably wouldn't need in a ray because they can be targeted by line of sight alone. Now the thing I still don't understand is where this wizard is "ray dependant". All you are giving up is one level for Spellthief. And you'll be sacrificing low level slots to sneak attack with rays, or adding a few dice to your disintegrates, when you have them. Attacking with rays is a style thing, that's all, you can still be a viable GOD at the same time - you just need a rod of lesser quicken. Hit a group with an SoD and snipe one of them with a quickened split ray Something. SWS abilities aren't really that great, but Unseen Seer is nice. Also, going by the description of Ray Deflection, Orbs are also deflected since they require a ranged touch attack IIRC, and I think orbs are many a blaster's best friends. Noone argues that they suck, though, because they can be deflected. They might suck (in a given environment) for other reasons. |
