| #1hodgie25May 08, 2011 20:45:02 | My old character died in a game, very high powered crazy game. Wight gives me D12 hit die, from now on. It also allows me to bestow 2 negative levels, everytime I hit with a natural attack. And all those nice undead traits. Evolved gives me nice CHA boost, Nat armor, other things. Base race is gonna be a Hellbred from fiendish codex. I end up with about 32 CHA with my 18 into it. We are only allowed 1 class level, going to 7th ECL. Gotta pad it out with templates, HD, and LA. The reason I chose Death master and Dread necro are because they deal with undead a lot, which I am, and they get huge bonuses from CHA, my highest stat. I also get and undead minion or 1D8+1 healing to me and my undead or damage to others for Death master or Dread necro, respectively. Any book is allowed, I need advice on feats, which class to choose, if I go Death master which undead minion to take, I looked at a ghoul, it's 1 CR, pretty good AC, good attacking ability. I talked to my DM, and he might allow me to start with 1 or 2 wights already under my control already. I'm starting with 19,000 gold. Need advice on good gear. I need to survive in this game, the DM is going to be cracking down on us. I looked at a cloak of charisma. I have 3 feats to choose from, taking 2 flaws. |

A Wiz 3/Clr 3/TN 14 (it's a 14 level PrC) gives you access to 9th level spells from both classes, and a host of other goodies. Not to mention the undead crafting feats that are in there. Hellbred doesn't seem like a good race to be able to play as an undead or a necromancer in my opinion, but it is your character. It says in the description that Hellbred can't be raised by anything but a Resurrection spell or higher, so how are you getting around the Hellbound ability/drawback being a sentient undead? Not to mention any other Hellbred would kill you on sight for being a necromancer, or the other in-game Role playing problems associated with being a necromancer (angry villagers, people who hunt and destroy undead, etc.) The whole point of a Hellbred from a RP prespective is redemption from the deeds of an evil life; unless you're worshipping Wee Jas or some good- or neutral-aligned death god/goddess, I really can't see this working out too well without the character being evil. At the end of the day, though, it's your decision. There are other templates/races that give you better than +2 Cha, but if it's your preferance...(shrugs). If you're playing with Psionics, grab the Phrenic template from XPH. Gives you a great deal for a LA of 0. The Hecuva and Half-Illithid templates from Fiend Folio are worth checking out, but apply the Half-Illithid template first, as it changes all HD to d8's. Where is Evolved Wight from anyway, I can't remember? Finally, is Dragon magazine allowed to be used in any way? |
| #3Chrome-GnomeMay 09, 2011 15:50:22 | With your great cha, I have the perfect feat for you. Life Drain(LM). Whenever you bestow a negative level, the victem loses 5hp, this changes that to 5 + your charisma mod and you gain temporary hp equal to the amount they lost for 1 hour. At 32 Cha, thats 16 damage and 16 temporary hp per negative level. I say don't take Ability focus, your save DC for energy drain is Cha based, so you don't need to improve it. But if you feel you need more, go ahead. If you think the DM will throw clerics at you, you may want either Improved Turn resistance(LM) or Necromantic presence(LM), since you control the wrights you create w/o turning. But if you want to control things with your dread necro's rebukin, then don't take Necro presence. |
| #4hodgie25May 10, 2011 16:06:25 | Life drain is good. Hellbred gives me 2 CHA, the DM allows it. Any other +CHA races would be appreciated if you got them. Wight is a template, and evolved undead is a seperate template. I got Wight from Savage species, and Evolved from libris mortis. Dragon magazine will be allowed. |
| #5Chrome-GnomeMay 10, 2011 16:28:52 | Spellscale is pretty good, +2 Cha and -2 Con. The con penalty is great because it won't affect you as a wright. Star Elf is good for simular reasons |
| #6hodgie25May 12, 2011 2:31:49 | I picked up savage species again. Thinking of going a monster class instead of Hellbred. I don't know exactly if I can do this, being undead, but I'll try. Succubus/Incubus gives me +6 CHA, at first level. 3 times as much as spellscale or hellbred or even star elf. Also, I gain other neat benefits. It's great. CHA boosting is the best thing for me. I also looked at the Hecuva template mentioned earlier, looks great as well. That leaves me with a whopping 36 CHA, 13 modifier. That makes the DC to avoid my negative levels 24. Don't know if a lot of things can make that. And it can only go up. This seems really awesome. Any tips on equipment, utility items, feats, anything I may be missing? I looked at grafts and stuff. There was one that grafted a weapon to your hand, making it a natural weapon. That's great because I can only do negative levels through natural attacks, so I'll be doing regular wep damage plus negative levels. What I mostly need are things to increase my hit points or make me really hard to hit. As it stands, I have 28 or 29 AC. Most things won't be able to hit me, but when they do, a mere 15 hit points (D12 hit die+3 from toughness bonus feat from hecuva) won't stop them. I do have fast healing 6 from the Evolved undead template however. I think the things the DM is throwing at us do more than 15 damage tho. Don't know what to do about that. |
| #7Chrome-GnomeMay 15, 2011 9:50:38 | So, you only have 1HD? that doesn't sound right. If I were you, I'd work your immunities to your advantage. Use poison. Maybe be a carrier for a Disease. With you current AC, I assume you've picked armor. Does your party have a rogue, you can make a good rogue-type with a fair amount of skill points and +8 racial move silently bonus. Maybe you can take bluff and feint in combat to give you a better chance to hit with slam. The good news is that with life drain, you can have temporary HP. Carry a bunch of cats in a bag of holding and drain them to gain temporary HP before/during combat. I'm kinda wondering what role you're filling in your party, that would help with picking gear. |
| #8hodgie25May 15, 2011 11:18:56 | I'm going to be a damage dealing guy. Not much else I could do. I suppose I could be the parties face with my insane 40 CHA. I got grafted weapon, making a scythe my natural attack, so I deal 2d4 and deal negative levels as opposed to having to use my claws and dealing 1d3 damage with negative levels. I love scythe because it's a X4 critical. That's pretty awesome. |
| #9Chrome-GnomeMay 15, 2011 13:55:45 | Well, I don't know about exact, but if I were you, I'd get some positive energy resistance.(Ring of Positive energy resistance is great, but out of your budget.) As for general stuff, Get a Pearls of Speech(Sphyx) for each of your party members (Most obscure language ever). Classic Hat of Disguise if you think the social stigma of being undead is too much for you. Also, since you have toughness, maybe you want to take a Tomb-Warden (if you can find a way to have a mobile graveyard) for the turn/rebuke immunity also the 3rd level ability w/ your cha mod would be great. Go for Evil Cleric, you get domain abilities, and you Can Bolster undead such as yourself Also, your "Evolved" template means you've been around for at least 100 years If you didn't want the weapon grafted, Necrotic Focus(LM)( +3) treats a weapon as natural weapon for using energy drain or such. Edit: I found a great feat Necrotic Reserve in LM, You create a reserve whenever you life drain, if you drop under 0 hp, it keeps you alive, but weakened. Another one: Is the actual positive energy resistance feat. |
| #10hodgie25May 15, 2011 19:47:50 | All great stuff. I can take my old characters share of the gold to pay for the Ring I think. |
| #11Chrome-GnomeMay 15, 2011 20:53:37 | Well, I hope you have lots of fun with the character, Its good to know there is another necro-player on the boards here, feel free to ask other questions. |
| #12hodgie25May 15, 2011 22:33:47 | I hope this undead survives. Or at least doesn't get commanded by the drow cleric in the party.... |
