| #1banatineMay 30, 2008 2:33:26 | We have just started an evil campaign, and i was going to be a warlock 6/ warmage 4/ eldritch theurge 10. I started as a warlock 1, with baleful utterance, and Mortalbane. That is where i draw a blank. Any help with any character aspects would be appreciated! |

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the warmage class but it's abilities don't seem to mesh well with that of a warlock besides the synergy of their Cha score. With the warlock's eldritch blast and the ability to infuse it with invocations, there's really no need for the warmage's destructive only spell list. Anyone on these boards will tell you right off to drop the warmage and grab the sorcerer, if you want to go that route. I actually prefer the wizard instead. It allows you to gain the Eldritch Theurge class quicker and it's versatility in spells can't be matched. Scribe scrolls in your off time for those "no point in memorizing" spells and leave your damage dealing to the gaining power of your eldritch blast. Sure your going to prepare a few destructive spells, but the combo of the Eldritch Theurge is to free up those slots for more diverse and helpful spells. I'd probably only have 1 spell per level that deals direct damage like magic missile or hail of stone at 1st, scorching ray at 2nd, lightning bolt or fireball at 3rd and so on... If or when you hit level 16 (warlock 3/wizard 3/eldritch theurge 10) stay on the wizard path, netting you 9th level spells at level 20. Feats like Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot allows you to shoot into melee without penalties and feats such as Ability Focus (eldritch blast) help boost DC saves. If you insist on being a warmage, still advance the warmage levels after 10 in eldritch theurge for 8th level spells and more importantly those spell slots. Feats such as Rapid Metamagic will help quicken your more potent spells while giving you the ability to eldritch blast in the same round. Other feats such as Sculpt Spell, Spell Focus (evocation), Greater Spell Focus (evocation), and Explosive Spell are good choices for warmages. Also, while Extra Spell is nice if your DM allows you to pick spells from the wiz/sor spell list, I dont' think it's worth the feat for 1 spell and stay away from Extra Edge, it's just stupid IMO. |

Unfortunately, those are three of the most common enemies DMs will use. While the feat is indeed very powerful (as it can be used all at once by RAW), sometimes it will hinder you if you don't know what you are up against. Note that Elementals, Plants, and even (sometimes) Oozes are considered immortal, so the feat may not work well if those show up too. A great way to back it up is with either the entire Elder Evils book or with the Sanctify and Purify SLA feats from the BoED. Also, the following are from the Wizards site, so they are legal for play: Infernal Affinity |
| #5banatineMay 31, 2008 17:04:51 | About why warmage, because i thought it was the perfect class to synergise with eldritch theurge, since i'm trying to be a sniper/blaster. I was originally going to go straight warlock 17/ hellfire warlock 3, but when i got complete arcane, i wanted to see what the theurge was like. Almost every spell on the warmage list can be used with Spellblast, which is what i was after. I'm just trying to play a simple-ish character. pretty much every utility spell i need can be gotten as invocations. last note: Why does everyone like the beguiler so much? (Maybe i should have just asked about feat choices...) |
| #6vicen_korelJun 01, 2008 0:23:11 | Becuase Beguiler is so much better than warmage. Warmage gets the same hit dice as the beguiler and both can cast in armor. However the beguiler gets Trapsense, more skill points, more skills, and a MUCH better spell list. Warmage has Warmage Edge which isn't great there are better ways to add damage to spells (BTW only works on warmage spells). And you could get most of your utility from warlock but I think you have the cart before the horse if you do. You will run out of spells, and even faster if you are blasting with them. Why blast with a limited resource when you have the ever-zap power of eldritch blast that equals damage spells easily? Grab a couple of blast invocations and be done with it, and you can still have some utility invocations. You save your spells for things that blasting won't solve. Also you can limit your blast damage, so if need be you could blast a friend for 1d6 damage + a buff spell effect (not the best way to do it but you could do it). |
| #7iamwardicusJun 02, 2008 9:22:28 | read this : http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=751117 : Thinblades warlock guide is the best one out there. also, I would recommend eldritch disciple and go along the lines of warlock / ur-priest /hellfire warlock. that's my personal favorite. |

That way, you can take 4 warlock, 1 mage, and enter Eld Disciple early. Hence, you lose very little warlock goodness, and gain the mage spells for "free". It also gives you some fun stuff like tossing a Blast and attaching a spell to it, or vice versa. |
