| #1Chaos348Apr 03, 2008 12:10:47 | I don't know if it's been spotted before (I've not seen it but that's no guarantee) but I just noticed the spell Delay Death in Miniatures Handbook. Broadly while under the effect of the spell you don't die at -10 hp. You keep on taking damage and if the spell ends and you're on -10 or below you still die. It's also persistable. So basically your hit point total becomes irrelevant. You need to have some way of not being unconscious while on -1 or less and I was thinking Healing Touch to boost you back up to half health when every body is dead. Essentially you just need to avoid death effects and stuff like disintegrate and you're good to go (and as I recall Bone Knight seems a good plan for that stuff). What do people think? |
| #2phaedrusxyApr 03, 2008 12:15:03 | Yes, this combined with the Die Hard feat has been used in many builds on here. I think there is also a spell that lets you continue to function when below 0 hit points. Beastlands Ferocity, IIRC. |
| #3Chaos348Apr 03, 2008 12:17:10 | Fair nuff... I assumed it had been spotted somewhere but it jumped out at me. |
| #4aftercrescentApr 03, 2008 12:23:37 | got nerfed in spell compendium. can't be persisted anymore. Still a decent spell for bone knights |
| #5WyvernhandApr 03, 2008 12:34:06 | Still a decent spell for ANYONE....When I'm playing LG, my cleric always packs at least one as an 8th level character. When I play my higher level fighter, I encourage clerics in the party to prep at least 1, if not 2. Its honestly an immediate action spell that generates 5000 gp in diamond dust every time someone in your party gets hit really hard. That to me is an amazing spell... |
| #6phaedrusxyApr 03, 2008 12:59:12 | Wow, they made it an immediate action and gave it close range? I'd hardly call that a "nerf"! Sounds like a great spell. Yeah, it won't help your DMM super-buffer, but it is great for a cleric that focuses more on helping out his groupmates. It makes Diehard a decent feat choice for the party's BSF, also. |
| #7aftercrescentApr 03, 2008 13:09:42 | Eh, touch spells are good for their ability to be reach/persisted. 1 rd/lvl is nice, don't get me wrong, but immortality from HP damage for a fighter is much nicer buff. :P |
| #8bowensilverclaw1986Apr 03, 2008 13:13:54 | Yeah, it's a fun combo. I'm planning on using it for the BBEG cleric of my campaign, 24 rounds of immortality :P ~Bowen |
| #9aftercrescentApr 03, 2008 13:16:30 | ;) Doesn't stop being disintegrated though. |
| #10phaedrusxyApr 03, 2008 13:16:58 | Eh, touch spells are good for their ability to be reach/persisted. 1 rd/lvl is nice, don't get me wrong, but immortality from HP damage for a fighter is much nicer buff. :P It is very debateable whether touch spells are legal targets for Persist. A 3.0 FAQ explicitly said they weren't. I'll leave it at that, because I don't want to derail the thread. :P |
| #11aftercrescentApr 03, 2008 13:20:12 | I agree with you. That's why I said "reach/persisted" Applying Reach Spell makes it a fixed range of 30' which makes it a valid persist target ;) Handy little trick, imo. |
| #12bowensilverclaw1986Apr 03, 2008 13:24:49 | ;) Doesn't stop being disintegrated though. Meh, decent SR, pretty high touch AC and a great Fortitude save should help a little :P Besides, I don't think the party actually has Disintegrate in their arsenal ![]() |
| #13WyvernhandApr 03, 2008 13:25:06 | Its also a druid spell...druids get animal companions...dire boars can be animal companions....dire boars have ferocity (like diehard, only better), druids can also wildshape...dire boar is a valid target for wildshape if you meet the HD...Ferocity is an (Ex)... SQUEAL LITTLE PIGGY, SQUEAL! |
| #14aftercrescentApr 03, 2008 13:28:41 | Its also a druid spell...druids get animal companions...dire boars can be animal companions....dire boars have ferocity (like diehard, only better), druids can also wildshape...dire boar is a valid target for wildshape if you meet the HD...Ferocity is an (Ex)... Possibly the best reason I've heard to use a dire boar wildshape ;) @ Bowen: Hahah, sucks for them. That'll be an intense encounter ![]() |
| #15phaedrusxyApr 03, 2008 13:35:13 | I agree with you. That's why I said "reach/persisted" Applying Reach Spell makes it a fixed range of 30' which makes it a valid persist target ;) Ah yeah, missed that reach in there. :P |
| #16operation_shoestringApr 03, 2008 13:42:28 | I agree with you. That's why I said "reach/persisted" Applying Reach Spell makes it a fixed range of 30' which makes it a valid persist target ;) I though only spells with a range of "personal" could be persisted. |
| #17phaedrusxyApr 03, 2008 13:44:02 | I though only spells with a range of "personal" could be persisted. Personal or "Fixed". |
| #18operation_shoestringApr 03, 2008 13:46:12 | Personal or "Fixed". I still don't think the trick works though... Reach spells are "ranged touch", and still not persist-able, IIRC. |
| #19aftercrescentApr 03, 2008 13:47:50 | They are ranged touch with a range of "30 feet" which is a fixed range. |
| #20WyvernhandApr 03, 2008 13:50:13 | Possibly the best reason I've heard to use a dire boar wildshape ;) The difference between Diehard and Ferocity is that Diehard specifically mentions a HP limit "-10" after which point, it doesn't work. Ferocity simply says that you are unaffected by the "disabled" and "dying" conditions, and its normally implied that at -10 you are no longer "dying", but "dead". Since Delay Death removes the "dead" part of being at -10 or below, its safe to assume that you are still "dying" at that point, which you AND your animal companion are explicitly not affected by for the duration of the spell. Just imagine...druid and his companion both reduced to like....-500 HP or something and still swinging before the party catches on and kills them both with a pair of targeted dispells... |
| #21aftercrescentApr 03, 2008 13:51:51 | It's amusing. And about the only reason I'd ever use boar form. Multiple natural attacks >>>> single natural in my mind ;) Still nice, though |
| #22phaedrusxyApr 03, 2008 14:06:11 | It's amusing. And about the only reason I'd ever use boar form. Multiple natural attacks >>>> single natural in my mind ;) Still nice, though The boar might make a decent grappler, though, if you have Improved Grapple. Use iterative grapple checks, instead of natural attacks. :P |
| #23skydragonknightApr 03, 2008 14:15:39 | Meh, decent SR, pretty high touch AC and a great Fortitude save should help a little :P Only SR and touch AC will help. Even if you save, if the 5d6 reduces you 0 or fewer HP, you're ash. What party doesn't have Disintigrate? The party that's never had it's Fighter trapped in a Forcecage. Or that's never fought a Frenzied Berserker in Deathless Frenzy. |
| #24skydragonknightApr 03, 2008 14:17:52 | It's amusing. And about the only reason I'd ever use boar form. Multiple natural attacks >>>> single natural in my mind ;) Still nice, though I find those forms quite a bore. |
| #25aftercrescentApr 03, 2008 14:48:56 | Boars? Or multiple natural attacks? |
| #26skydragonknightApr 03, 2008 17:44:31 | Read what I said aloud. |
