Ok so I am playing D&D 3.5 in Ebberon and I want to make myself a vampire. Only thing is I want to not end up being in control of the vampire I intend to ask. Is there a spell or something that would release me from his control, preferably something I can use / cast before hand. I am a Cleric / Bone Knight with the ability to use up to 5th level Cleric spells.

Also it may sound like a small thing but I do not want to lose my soul. (end up with some kind of possibility of a Vampire me versus a Ghost or resurected me. lol.) Would I have to prepare something for that too and if so what would it be?

thanks for the help

You don't have to bump your thread so soon.

The vampire can't control you when he's destroyed. If the party destroys the vampire after he has made you a vampire, there's no vampire to control you.

I don't understand your question about the soul, so I can't help. Sorry.

Also, I'm wondering - vampires have a level adjustment of +8.  Will your party gain eight levels when you become a vampire? Have you talked with your DM about it?

yeah my DM likes the idea, we are near the end of the campaign and it works out perfectly story-wise (I'm a Colonel in the Order of Rekkenmark directly under a vampire we met after our 2nd day (by day I mean how many days we have been playing D&D we are all new to it).

Plus it hasn't been an issue in the past, one ally became a Werewolf he just stopped leveling up with us (funny story, he was always... ALWAYS... attacking us every encounter and each time we had to put him down (to less than -10 of course) which was easy due to DR. So the last time he turned, he ripped apart like 5 strong enemies and was down to 2HP before turning on my other ally. He scared and after doing the math, fired a spell at him, forgetting the DR doesn't apply. He dealt 12 damage. Now he is a Half-Celestial (new character of course).

Anyway forget about the soul thing I mis-read another type of creature, thanks anyway.

Yeah so far the only choices are to have Zvi release control of me (eep), or have the party kill him (even though they wont know I've been turned until the end - my character was built to be a support character so when the other turn on me (and they will) I will have zero chance without being a vampire). Basically I'm looking for a charm or spell to protect me from being mentally controlled by Zvi, can't seem to find one. If you think of anything please let me know.

Thanks.

Protection from evil (or an equivalent) might offer temporary protection, since one of its effects is to prevent mental control from being exerted.  It wouldn't break the control completely, and the duration is relatively short (1 min./level), but it's something.

yeah unfortunately that seems to be the only choice I really have. Oh well, if anyone can think of something more permanent please let me know.

thanks guys.

Sticking with Necromancy = theme is appropriate.

Necropolitan feat, and some fluff = somwhat in the ballpark.

Vampire racial template progression = almost spot on, with quirks.
www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/200...

You don't have to take the template all at once, or
consecutively.  You could take 1 level of it, and "plan"
to take the rest of it during your eternal retirement.

Pick some Vampire-y feats + spells, to have the flavor.

edit --- you mentioned Ghost, which also has a racial template.
www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/200...
Ghost 1 is rather the dish.

pretty sweet links awaken. Definitely something I will be using when I become the DM.

I have a question about the vampire domination thing:

Would I be able to act to temporarily remove the domination with Protection from Evil and then attack and kill the vampire that controls me or is that something I cannot plan ahead of time and the only way I could turn on my creator is for someone else to use Pro-Evil?

I don't really know how the control works exactly, am I completely sired to him that I cannot use the Protection from Evil spell as a way to let me kill him or am I only compelled when I'm given an instruction?

thanks

You could Diplomance the Vampire ahead of time.
Charm + Hypno = Fanatic = I'll make you into a
Vampire even though I now hate you for it.

The Vamp template class doesn't make mandatory
the use of the specific Vamp bite + release rountine.
You The Over Deity, made your PC into a Vamp
... because you can.  It looked like you followed "the" rules.

Anyone have any other ideas that might work? Protection from Evil works on the Vampire's Dominate ability but my DM disagrees with the natural sire-bond like control.

Anyone know of a way for me to temporarally break the control so I can kill my master myself? I may be screwed and be completely bound to him (which is fine but I would like to break it if possible).

Before he turns you, arrange to have someone kill him after you've been turned.

haha thought of that, the only guy that could even try (my cohort from the Leadership feat) is dangerously under powered, especially if he has to fight me as well.

I may be pretty screwed aren't I? :P

Mercenaries are always an option. Hire a band of warforged, since they can't be turned into vampires.

another solid idea, unfortunately I would never find strong enough mercenaries.

I appreciate your posts though, at the very least giving me ideas for when I am DMing a campaign.

Well, by the SRD, " A vampire may voluntarily free an enslaved spawn in order to enslave a new spawn, but once freed, a vampire or vampire spawn cannot be enslaved again." The first part technically only mentions spawn, but the second seems to indicate that vampires under the control of the vampire sire can also be freed.

So "all" you need to is convince your superior at Rekkenmark to let you free. No need to get him slain. He's your superior officer and a fellow member of the Order, for the Blood's sake. You would not actually betray the Order in that fashion, would you, Colonel? Wink

As to how you could get the vampire to release you, there are several possibilities. Strike a deal with him, if you have something to offer. Perform some service for him, perhaps destroying his sire, if he has one, or whatever else it takes. If nothing else works, use blackmail or get someone to use control undead on him, from a scroll if necessary. Just remember to have those things in place before, and make sure he cannot renege on the deal.

I don't suppose you could diplomonster yourself to make the vampire friendly towards you then convince him to give you his gift but since your friendly not enslave you and let you free.
