| #1katashMar 31, 2008 18:35:39 | Hello, Wanna play a warmage in an upcoming game and need it to rock. Have read alot of stuff knocking this class. Would like it if it could be pimped. Was thinking Warmage?/IOSV7/Sand Shper? Utilising versatile spellcaster and one of the Feat bloodline spellists from Dragon compendium (unsure which) The bloodline feat and Sand shaper add alot of new spells, versatile spellcaster will let me swap low level crappy for higher level spells. PHB II eclectic learning will give 3 more utility spells. IOSV will give good defensive abilites without sacrificing spell levels. Unsure of the rest of feat selection, gear etc., ways too get more spells known Help please? BAB is gonna suck (i can live with that) but need to make this guy an arcane killa if poss. HAVE to keep my 9th lvl spells. |

| #3magrusApr 01, 2008 2:33:48 | Oh lol, I just find the link to that thread being the first suggestion for a thread like this vastly amusing. It conjures images of hobo warmages who can't adventure anymore, and what they do for coppers. ![]() Umm, why not be a monk instead if you want an arcane caster killer? It's about the only thing they're good at. You'll make someone feel special somewhere if you do that. |
| #4neboApr 01, 2008 2:39:26 | Umm, why not be a monk instead if you want an arcane caster killer? It's about the only thing they're good at. You'll make someone feel special somewhere if you do that. That would be a good idea if monks were actually good at that. You're better off blowing goats. |
| #5ander_spectacularApr 01, 2008 5:38:00 | That thread actually contains some great tips on building a great warmage. That thread came down to a debate about which specific spells were the best instead of a debate about whether the sorceror or warmage was a better class. On which blasts better, warmage does so hands down(as indicated in that thread). There are some good builds in there. Blending some of the ones I put with some of the ones solbergb posted should help. How are you getting into IotSV? -AS- |
| #6the_shamanApr 01, 2008 5:43:45 | Umm, why not be a monk instead if you want an arcane caster killer? It's about the only thing they're good at. You'll make someone feel special somewhere if you do that. Even with the get-out-of-jail card that Abundant step is, it's not a good idea. The most you should get, as usual, is 6 monk levels, but even then I'd suggest another base class. If you have problems with casters, the best idea is to fight fire with fire, imo. The monk is imo at its best when countering other agile combatants such as rogues or scouts, or possibly against archers. It's not as bad vs mages as a few other classes, but it's far from good at it. |
| #7ChristopherGrovesApr 01, 2008 8:31:39 | If you really want your warmage to rock, prestige bard. |
| #8katashApr 15, 2008 8:02:11 | Okay, I've read the afore mentioned threads (even started one using Treantmonk's guides to create an alternative spellist.) As much as I loved the new spellist it was overpowered. Found (I think) a decent solution for a fairly rockin' but not insane Warmage. Build: Human, Two flaws Wis must be 15 Non-good 'Dark hero, uses evil against evil type' Warmage 13/IOSV7 Lvl 1 Feats- Arcane Disciple- Protection domain (all spells are Abj. 1/day but fills preq for IOSV) Mother Cyst- grants some AWESOME Save or Dies, (dependant on a successful 2nd level casting. All offensive spells in the list 5th lvl or higher deal capped 15d6 on a successful save and die if fail (necrotic eruption has the added benefit of implanting a cyst in sorrounding creatures) Penumbra Bloodline (Dragon Compendium)-Grants some shadow spells, including Shadow Evocation and Greater version. Spell Focus: Necro Lvl3-Spell Focus:Abj Lvl 6-Skill Focus:Spellcraft Lvl9- Versatile Spellcaster Lvl12-Gtr Spell Focus: Abj Lvl15-Extra Spell: Need help Lvl18-Extra Spell: Need help Advanced/Eclectic Learning- 3- Dawnburst 6-Manyjaws or Great Thunderclap or Wings of Cover 11- Wall of Force or Wings of Flurry or Dimension Door. NOTES Char role- Dark Persona Focused Blaster (Hence use of Warmage) with some good save of Die's (Mother Cyst) Evocations likely Copied (Shadow and Gtr) Seeking Ray (PHB II) Ray of Ice (SC) Scorching Ray (PHB) Tenser’s Floating Disk (PHB) Manyjaws or Great Thunderclap or Wings of Cover (Depending on what I choose above) Blacklight (SC) Ghost Lantern (CM) Sonorous Hum (SC) :evillaugh I think this would ALWAYSwork as he BBEG does not interact with it. Contingency Give up your save and have this work all the time.Bigby’s Grasping Hand (PHB) ForceCage Wall of Force or Wings of Flurry (Depending on what I choose above) So *THINGS I'M UNSURE OF. 1. The Description for manyjaws in my SC says they are up to 10 pairs of jaws doing 1d6 dam NOT 1d6/CL so why does everyone act like one set of jaws does 1d6/lvl capped at 10d6? IS THIS ERRATA? 2. Are these the best possible choices for Advanced/Eclectic Learning? 3. Are the Shadow Evocation/Gtr versions worth it? The ability to spontaneously cast ANY evocation spell I want seems great but does the extra will save make it crap? 4. Is this the best feat selection? 5. What spells do I learn at 15,18 (keep in mind DM rules ANY spell is allowed as long as it's arcane) |
| #9katashApr 15, 2008 14:03:24 | Any ideas on tweaking? I know this class doesn't do 3million damage on x spell but the class abilities for IOSV are pretty powerful defensively. Will this be playable. I normally play straight psions or gish psions or the Big stupid fighter. Never a pure caster before so need advice. Would have liked focused specialist (Treantmont seems to rate em) so I could learn the best spells but I really like the spontaneus casting (hence, my preference for Psions but sorcerers have to few spells known for me). |
| #10ander_spectacularApr 15, 2008 15:31:23 | For your 15th level Extra Spell, Avasculate(SC) would be helpful. For 18th, Greater Arcane Fusion. You should be solid with that. -AS- |
| #11katashApr 16, 2008 3:33:36 | Cheers, where is Gtr Arcane Fusion? Not sure if the Mothercyst spells are as good as first thought. Takes 2 rounds to kill. One for the 2nd level cyst spell (which may fail) and another for the save of die. Is this using too many actions? ![]() |
| #12andyjamesApr 16, 2008 5:18:20 | There is only one way that a Warmage becomes good: Rainbow Servant :D *runs away from the can of worms* |
| #13x-codesApr 16, 2008 6:03:07 | If you really want your warmage to rock, prestige bard. With Eclectic Learning to nab Charm Person, it's actually not a bad idea. |
| #14ander_spectacularApr 16, 2008 6:45:14 | Cheers, where is Gtr Arcane Fusion? Greater Arcane Fusion is Complete Mage. 2 rounds is a bit long in all honesty. You are lacking some metamagic(empower, maximize) so you could always trade Mother Cyst out. Trying to get Charm Person would be nice, actually. If you figure out the skills side, you can get into Mindbender, which would be pretty sweet. -AS- |
| #15ChristopherGrovesApr 16, 2008 7:44:44 | Plus you'd be a bard. By definition, you'd rock (and roll). To get into Prestige Bard you need divination, illusion, enchantment. Your list starts with one (divination) and you can eclectic-ize the others. It does take a feat of some sort to get the necessary Perform ranks. Not to mention you'd immediately add some handy spells to your spell list. |
| #16alastarApr 16, 2008 7:51:24 | Could Greensinger initiate work? |
| #17katashApr 17, 2008 18:06:27 | Minbender no good, will NOT sacrifice CL. As for Mother Cyst, not sure as never tried it before, but forgot to mention DM LOVES to throw heaps of fodder at us along with high HP Mellee threats with a (usually caster) type mastermind. Combat for us generally lasts more than 10 rds. Feasable then? Necrotic cyst is 2nd level fort, with spell focus:necro what are the averages of a Caster succeeding his save. Maybe arcane prep and highten spell would be worth it to bump the DC? Way I see it- Rd 1 cast hightened Necrotic Cyst (max spell level avail) on the caster boss. Use swift action spell to hit someone else. RD2- Use necrotic eruption on caster (save and still suck) if saved made still takes 15d6 (half vile) but if save failed he dies, surrounding fodder must save or be infected with their own cyst AND take 15d6 damage (reflex half) Rd3- Boss dead so either commence blasty cleanup or Use Necrotic Tumor to dominate that Big stupid fighter that MAY have failed his save. Worth it? Any one know the save vs fort likely hood for a caster type? |
| #18jaronkApr 17, 2008 18:56:29 | On which blasts better, warmage does so hands down(as indicated in that thread). Bah, Warmages can't cast Maw of Chaos! Okay, seriously, getting more spells on the list is priority number 1. Sandshaper and PrC bard both do it, but you lose caster levels. If you could find a way to get Silent Image onto your spell list, Shadowcraft Mage would absolutely rock. JaronK |
| #19katashApr 17, 2008 19:21:31 | Extra spell would do it where is shadow craft mage- can't recall the class.![]() |
| #20ChristopherGrovesApr 17, 2008 20:33:17 | Races of Stone Ok, so you're missing our point on Mindbender. Try this. Warmage 6 (w/ two eclectic learnings) / Prestige Bard 2 / Mindbender 1 That's only one lost CL (from Prestige Bard 1) ... a hugely expanded spell list. Feat-wise you'll need Apprentice (Entertainer) or similar to snag Perform + Practiced Spellcaster. FROM THERE you don't do anything else to lose a caster level. One ain't horrible. |
| #21zarzakApr 17, 2008 22:47:20 | A nice quick fix is to make warmage INT based instead of CHA based (so a high INT helps warmage edge and his spells). Makes more sense based on the flavor text too (imo warmage should've been INT based, beguiler should've been CHA based ... I don't know why its the other way around). Ask your DM about it - I'm playing that way in a game, no expanded spell list yet, and rocking. I just focus everything on INT, get some nice bonus damage and some nice bonus spells - as it should be. |
| #22Treantmonklvl20Apr 17, 2008 22:48:03 | You could get into IotSV with the Arcane Disciple feat (Protection Domain) You would have Spell Immunity and Spell Resistance at 10th level qualifying the 2 abjuration spells level 4 or above requirement. You would get some decent protection spells on the list as well. |
| #23katashApr 18, 2008 0:28:59 | Went that way. Protection domain is okay, even at one/day. IOSV seems really powerful defensively. so will sure up defensive weaknesses. Rainbow servant seems good but the whole casting any divine spell ability (while great) takes too long for me. Will look at mindbender (but besides the telepathy- mother cyst duplicates the domination/thrall spells) and sand shaper again (what's the view on the SS extra spells? none of them reached out and screamed pick me!) If anyone could go thru some of the better SS spells? If there are any pearls in there. Cheers |
| #24katashApr 18, 2008 15:46:45 | Kill this thread- not happy with the way warmage is shaping.![]() |
| #25Midnight_vApr 18, 2008 17:17:16 | Kill this thread- not happy with the way warmage is shaping. Most people I've talked about it weren't either... |
| #26ander_spectacularApr 19, 2008 7:02:54 | Kill this thread- not happy with the way warmage is shaping. What is disappointing you about it? The setup(IotSV) you have is very unusual, so that could have some impact. It would be interesting to hear your problem, though. -AS- |
| #27ChristopherGrovesApr 19, 2008 7:54:36 | Sand Shaper does get some nice spells (and check out the buffs - they are a level early). I do prefer other casting options though, generally. At later levels, Rainbow Servant is awesome paired with their ability to cast any spell on their spell list. At lower levels, I generally prefer prestige bard. IotSF did sound pretty interested though. What were your problems? What level did you start, etc.? |
| #28neraagileApr 19, 2008 8:20:46 | That's only one lost CL (from Prestige Bard 1) ... a hugely expanded spell list. Feat-wise you'll need Apprentice (Entertainer) or similar to snag Perform + Practiced Spellcaster. where does it state anything about gaining more spells from the prestige bard? It will increase CL of certain schools as well as lowering the CL of others... but thats it Spellcasting |

| #30ChristopherGrovesApr 19, 2008 8:38:45 | (it is often missed) |
| #31katashApr 19, 2008 17:06:15 | Class abilities were fine but still chafing at the spellist. Going to try again with sorcerer and learn as many off the best spells off Treantmonk's guide's as I can get. Still gonna shoot for IOSV. | #32ShakaUVMApr 19, 2008 18:40:56 | Hello, Have your DM make a new class for you and call it a Warmage. |
| #33Midnight_vApr 19, 2008 19:17:02 | Have your DM make a new class for you and call it a Warmage. I can no longer tell when people are joking or being serious.... ![]() ![]() |
| #34ninjarabbitApr 19, 2008 21:26:58 | I think the problem was that you were trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. Warmage and IotSV just isn't a good combination. |
| #35ShakaUVMApr 29, 2008 2:25:30 | I can no longer tell when people are joking or being serious.... I'm serious. With a few tweaks to the class, it could be a lot better. The main issue is warmage edge not scaling correctly between 1st and 20th levels. If it scaled up over time (perhaps being able to add +int to spell damage per 5 levels) then it'd be a bit more playable. |
