Master Template List

While working on a thread for The Symbiotic Creature Template Symbiotic Creature Template – Handbook
I got frustrated with trying to figure out which templates would work for this. And so the Master Template List is born...

I have tried to compile a list of all the templates available for use on creatures and player characters. Level Adjustments (LA) and types are listed with the most up to date errata if possible.

LA listed as n/a is either not available or listed as as LA: –, which generally means not avaialable as a player character option.

Format
The formatting is the Name of the template (Book & page number) the LA – the requirements to apply the template and what the creature type changes to(TC.

Additional Template Information

Instructions on how to Apply a template - Here is a handy link to a WoTC article on how to go through applying a template.

Mulhorandi Divine Minion -- online Template that allows access to 11th lvl druid wildshape for only LA+1.

Vampire Lord Template - This one bears special mention as there is no level adjustment. You have to meet a 10 character level requirement after you become a vampire but the benefits are very nice. I will include it in the list below under the LA +0.

Template Racial Classes (thanks Sharp_Claw) - Here is a handy link to an article on templates as a racial class and a note below on how to (ab)use it.

I'm particularly interested in Templates that change a creatures Type, so yeah, this looks like a great list idea.

My current fixation is Clerics commanding other critters via the Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Plant, Spider, Slime, Scalykind, Thirst, Warforged, etc. domains, so Templates that can make a creature into an Earth creature (Mineral Warrior, Earth Creature), or a Contruct (Half-Golem, Raggamoffyn, Ice Beast, Dustform Creature), or a Plant (Yellow Musk Zombie), are always useful for my mad tinkerings.

Have you considered sorting the templates by LA, or base type, rather than by book? From my own point of view, I'm generally looking for a template for a specific creature. Which book it comes from is a secondary concern.

Anyway, just a suggestion.

I had thought about sorting it by LA but I usually look at what book first to see if it would comply with the game I am in. Maybe I will make a second list sorted by LA.

Sorting by base type would be too complicated as there are too many varying possibilities.

You have the Epic Level Handbook Pseudonatural as +4 LA.

I don't recall it having a level adjustment, but the Challenge Rating adjustment is +10 to +16, depending on HD.

I very much doubt that the LA on a +16 CR template would be +4. :|.

Well, there's also one listed in Races of the Dragon, which is interesting. I can't recall what they're called, but they start off as one of the base races, then go through this ritual which transforms them into a draconic version of their original self. They get scales, fangs, claws, everything, but they still have the "frame" of the original body. "Sharp eyes can determine...their race of origin."

What do you mean by "LA n/a"? Why is it not applicable?

LA n/a means that there was no level adjustment listed in the text or that the Level Adjustment was listed as LA:-

If I read it right, the rules about LA means that a LA: n/a means it cant be used by PCs. But to not include those in the Master Template List would be leaving out way too many of them. This list is supposed to be a Master list encompassing all templates from all books. This is supposed to be a resource for both sides (PC's and DM's). Feel free to alert me to anything I have missed.

Just a note about the link I posted: the beauty of those classes (or perhaps, the way to abuse them), is to remember that you don't have to take all the levels of a class. Or any, for that matter. For example, you can be an Aasimar, complete w/the Outsider subtype and +2 Cha, for no LA.

The reason I keep all listings up is so that people who have games where they can only use specific books can use this thread to help them. Also by including all versions of a template, this thread is all incompassing, and people can see the progression of the template. Such as if you play a 3.0 game (not likely anymore) but just in case. Or if there is ever a debate over a template people can find all instances of it printed.

That was my reason behind leaving duplicates of a template in both lists.

Well, it's described in the flavor text as power neutral, trading spellcasting for other abilities. I'd have to call that RAI LA 0, with now RAW LA in sight. And it just begs in my mind for dragon-wrought kobold abuse.

I'm not familiar with the dragon-wrought kobolds. How would this combination work? Xorvintaal is only applicable to young adult or older true dragons, not just any creature with the dragon type - does this invalidate the loophole?

I believe the Vampire Lord template was also written back in the 3.0 era, when LA did not exist.

Looks at 3.0 Monster Manual II: "Some of the creatures in this book are capable of having levels in a class, and when they do, they are significantly more powerful than the races described in the Player’s Handbook. This difference in power is expressed as the creature’s level adjustment (a positive number). This number and the creature’s Hit Dice are added to the creature’s class level to determine its effective character level, or ECL."

Looks like 3.0 knew level adjustments, alright .

The necropolitan should be under a lvl requirment since you lose a lvl in the ritual and 1000 exp to kick. If that takes you to 0 exp or less you are utterly destroyed and can never be raised or revived. So in truth this can not betaken unless your a lvl 3 char with say 1 or more exp point into 3rd lvl if taken befor your are totaly screwed.

On the LA's you need to look at Hit Die (HD) and LA/CR. Quick example, this is not a template, Minotaur as a PC +2 LA but has 6 HD. 6+2=8 Therefore when you want to take a level, say fighter, you must be in progression of going from level 8 to level 9. Take a look at some of the Templates I'm not sure which ones but I do think a few give you additional HD. I know some also increase your HD.

This should help in figuring the total LA, that and listing the LA + any HD would give a better feel for the playability of the Template.

Just a thought.

I'm saddened that there are so few LA0 or LA1 races or templates that boost INT. Deep Imiskari ("Dragon" 3.0) gives +2 INT, -2 DEX, and some other stuff for 1 LA. Primordial (Secrets of Xen'drik) half-giant (Expanded Psionics Handbook) gives +4 INT and CHA for 1 LA.

I never looked through all the Templates but what I said was I think there are a few that give some (ie +2HD). And a few that increase your HD (ie d8 to d10)

Dragon Disciple PrC from TaB 3.0 increase from HD (ie d8 to d10, max d12)
new Dragon Disciple has base d12 from DMG 3.5 -- Sorry Surreal
Half Dragon does the same (ie d8 to d10, max d12)
Multiheaded out of Savage Species-- each extra head gave an additional 2 HD.

Thanks for that one.

Yes these are all 3.0, but as stated above this is a compiled list of all templates 3.0 to 3.X So that anyone looking for a specific Template can find it and where it's located. But having them listed by correct LA's and HD's adjustments help people choose an appropriate one for themselves.

And I agree that there are not enough +0 or +1 Templates for PC's.

You do know that that kind of HD adjustment has no affect on the ECL, and it only affects racial HD right?

Also, I misunderstood what you meant when you said increase your HD. I thought you were talking about adding again, not increasing the die itself.

Yes, but the multi headed template does give you an additional +2 HD/additional head. Though this template is 3.0, it is still usable in 3.5 as it was not reprinted or errata'ed (?sp). Makes a good template more for DM's than for PC's, but still have you ever fought a 2 headed blink dog or a 3 headed minotaur? :D Still a good Template.

I think this thread has forgotten the 'Vivacious' template.

Templates/races that give incorporeality.

Undead don't increase by one step, they change all current and future HD to d12.

[USELESS PEDANTRY] Most do. For example, the lich and ghost templates say "increase all current and future," the skeleton and zombie templates say "double the number of Hit Dice left, and raise them to d12s," and the necropolitan template says "increase all." I cannot think of any templates that do not say it in some form, however. [/USELESS PEDANTRY]

Note that non-templates do not say this. For example, the sample mummy lord with ten levels in cleric has 8d12 plus 10d8 Hit Dice.

Looks like 3.0 knew level adjustments, alright .

part of the reason 3.5 was printed was to address inconsistencies from the early 3.0 books compared to later ones. Monster Manual II (or BoED, etc) is a perfect example of this transitional period when 3.0 was on the way out and 3.5 was coming up.

Dragonborn (LA0 - Races of the Dragon 8) requires the subject be non-evil and have at least 3 INT and changes the subject to a Humanoid (dragonblood). The subject is treated as a dragon as well as a member of her original type.

It doesn't change your type. It just gives you the dragonblood subtype, and it is poorly written.

Are there any templates, aside from Titanic, that can increase a creature's size category?

Demilich (ELH 175) LA n/a – Any Lich Type Changes: Vermin

Type should remain undead. Even the example demilich remains undead. and the creation section doesn't mention it's type being changed.

Also, there is an LA for Demilich. IIRC it's +8. The very last section under creating a demilich discusses demilich characters. though they don't mention an LA.

Monsters by Challenge rating on page 156:
Demilich is CR 29 and ECL 33.
subtract 21 level wizard, +4 for lich, and you are left with a +8 for DL.

CR 23 Paragon, mind flayer. ECL 26. minus 8HD, 7LA (base race). leaves you with +11 LA. I remember that the guys on the epic boards disagreed with this LA quite a lot. though I can't remember if they recommended that it be higher or lower.

They did say that +8 for DL was alright. You're losing 12 HD and 12 caster levels to do it as a player. so it's a balanced trade when you take into account epic level play.

26 (cr) Worm that walks 27 (ecl)
23HD = +4LA
Type actually becomes Ooze as per the creation rules. Why the sample creature is listed as aberration I have no idea.

21 (cr) Pseudonatural troll 24 (ecl)
6hd, +5la (troll) = +13 LA

Anyways yea.

AFAIK, no templates give additional HD. At least, I have never seen one. You say you know some increase your HD, can you give an example?

Example would be Titanic from the MM2. It specifically states that the template changes size to gargantuan, and increases the creatures HD to 25.

Gravewight is listed as LA+0 on this list, has none listed in its containing book, but it is pretty close to the LA+4 from other publications.
