#1 johniemi Jun 02, 2008 0:28:20	Hello, I'm totally out of ideas and don't have much free time to make my character before tomorrow's session so I'd like your help. We start at lvl7 and all books are available. I need to make a pure melee character, I was thinking of a basic damage dealer, e.g., half-ogre (la+1) wielding a (goliath) greathammer, some levels of Barbarian and of course 1 lvl of exotic weapon master for the uncanny blow- ability. I said he'd have a goliath greathammer, but what I need by the rules is a racial weapon for giants. I'm sure my DM will let me use the goliath greathammer as a racial exotic weapon but are there other alternatives? The other option that would be loads of fun would be a melee cleric but I don't know where to start. I've never played a cleric so I don't know what to do but I can build a gish (from a Sor or Wiz) anytime. I just don't want to play a gish in this campaign as there are two arcane casters in the party already.

#4 marcb Jun 02, 2008 8:05:22	At lvl 7, I might go for Human Cleric 4/Ordained Champ 3 For feats I would definitely go with Extra Turning and extend spell for (DMM persist) Take the war domain so you can get prof. with longsword or whatever your diety's weapon is. You should also take power attack or replace a domain power with it when you take ordained champ 1. For the future of the build, I kind of prefer Cleric 4/Ord. Champ 3/Prestige Paladin 2/Contemplative 1/Fist of Raziel 10
#5 kinter Jun 02, 2008 9:01:08	I'm working on a similar level 5 character of 4 cle and 1 OrdChamp. Setting is homebrew so I can pick my deity's favored weapon. Was going to go heavy flail and try to fit in imp trip and/or disarm, but I'm not sure if I can fit it in. Stats are 14 9 16 13 18 11. Is it worth it to get DMM Persist with such low CHA and thus low TAs? My Domains are War, Str, and Planning. Should I stick with DMM Extend or just drop DMM altogether? Here are some feats I'm thinking of: Holy Warrior Knowledge Devotion Power Attack Combat Expertise Improved trip/disarm Extra Turning I don't want to swap in more classes and I'll probably only make it up to 12 max in this campaign so I want to optimize for mid level.
#6 aftercrescent Jun 02, 2008 9:06:16	New cleric handbook in the sig. Does your DM allow LA buyoff? Goliath cleric 3/Church Inqusitor 2/Bone Knight 2 is a good start. So is Ordained Champion and a lot of other classes. Even a Monk-Cleric Gish could be fun :D
#7 ninjarabbit Jun 02, 2008 20:06:17	Since half-ogres are LA +1 in your campaign I'd suggest a half ogre cleric6 with the strength domain and the human heritage feat. Human heritage makes you considered a human for stuff like spell effects, which means you're now a legal target for the enlarge person spell, which just happens to be a spell in the strength domain. So now with a 1st level spell you can become huge-sized.

#9 johniemi Jun 03, 2008 1:23:29	I think he's referring to the Savage Species half-ogre. In a later book (don't remember which one), the same half-ogre was upped to LA +2. But I could use the LA+1 version... ;)

I assume dragon magazine is okay, since half ogre at LA+1 and half minotaur are in the same issue (DR 313 p94 according to CrystalKeep). That way you get boosts to all the important skills. Start human, 2 feats, then you get two more at level 3 & 6 (if you get flaws, this works even better, let me know) Grab Strength Devotion, Take the Strength Domain and Planning Domain. Now you are large and have 2 natural weapons (slam and gore). Take multiattack if you want (i.e. if you have flaws). Get Persist spell at level 1 and DMM persist at level 3. Grab large and in charge at 6th level. It's a feat in Draconomicon. Str>Wis>Cha>Con>Dex>Int In that order. If nightsticks stack, lower Cha below Con. Go Cleric 3/Church Inquisitor 3 if possible. (You'll be a couple XP short of level 7, but you'll get there quickly). If Eberron stuff is allowed drop that last CI level for Bone Knight, you'll want to get into that ASAP. Any questions?

Yes templates can be bought off. And the half-ogre at LA+1 is a template, not a race. It's from dragon magazine. Yes, Saint would be a good choice, but not at this level.

As already pointed out earlier in the thread, there is a LA +1 half-ogre in Savage Species, also.

On my initial scan of SS, I didn't see the Half-Ogre so assumed, since the OP was unsure, that it was actually the template in DR. I see now the actual race. My suggestion above stands about the 1/2 minotaur if available. If not, the 1/2 ogre from SS will do as a substitute in the same build. :D
