Metamorphic Spellcasting - Time

I recently starting working around the Recaster's metamorphic spellcasting powers in two different games (with basically the same build). The power lets me quicken a spell for free, but it has to be a spell that has a duration greater than 1 round, and the duration is lowered to one round.

The character(s) is a focused conjurer with spontaneous divination, banned schools are evocation, illusion and enchantment. Currently using up to 5th level spells.

What are some good options for spells that have enough duration to be quickened with this class feature, without them being made terrible due to duration being reduced to 1 round. At the moment the only thing I have used it on is Ray of Clumsiness as a quick debuff to make sure I can land a maximized Shivering Touch on the enemy, figuring the ray's damage lasts only 1 round but it wouldn't matter with the 18 dex damage from the Shivering Touch.

Spells from any source are open for use as long as it's not game-breaking. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd probably use it with spells that can be disrupted after they are cast, or require new saves every round. If not for your choice of prohibited schools, I'd suggest Friend to Foe from the PHB2.

You can use it together with Extend Spell to get Quicken at +1, or even with a Rod.

Also, it can be even better for spells like Healing Cocoon - not only would it Quicken it, but it would end sooner.

Look for spells that have a minor effect that lasts the duration, and a "quick" main effect.

Excellent suggestion! I can't really fit the feat into the build but a lesser rod is extremely cheap.

Look for spells that have a minor effect that lasts the duration, and a "quick" main effect.

That's pretty much what I was getting at... looking for specific suggestions though. Really good debuffing spells would be ideal, since I could quicken one then follow up with a save-or-be-screwed/dead spell on the same round.

Fairly standard wizard tactics of course, but I'm pretty limited in what spells can get good use here....

Someone (who used to write a great CO Diary) used it with the Murderous Mist (SC) druid spell - he had picked it as an extra spell. The blind condition is instantaneous so it doesn't matter that the spell lasts only 1 round (it's actually better - your teammates can go in there and mop up).

Similarly, Stinking Cloud could work depending on the wording (IIRC it only shortens the spell's duration, not the duration of the effects).

My immediate answer would be Ray of the Python, but you can't cast cast it since it's a Sor/Wiz Evocation spell. ...unless you learn it with one of the Recaster's Expanded Knowledge.

That one spell stays effective forever, and wins encounters with high CR bruisers easily. Further, it's a great Echoing/Repeat spell.

What do you mean by that? Doesn't it just change the duration to 2 rounds instead of just 1?

Spell Compendium or Complete Mage.

Hmm. PHB2, apparently.
