Need a new level 8 Character for Friday (most books allowed, 1 flaw, 36 PB). I've always toyed with the idea of a Master of Shrouds.

Never played an Archivist before, so I'm thinking of going with...

Illumian, NaenHoon Sigils
Archivist 2/Cloistered Cleric (Undeath, Planning) 1/Master of Shrouds 5

1. CC1- Knowledge Devotion, Extra Turning, Extend Spell, SF (Conjuration), Augment Summoning [flaw]
2. Archivist1-
3. Archivist2- Persistent Spell
4. MoS1-
5. MoS2-
6. MoS3- Practiced Spellcaster
7. MoS4-
8. MoS5-

Abilities (36-point buy):

Str 12
Dex 10
Con 13 (+1=14)
Int 18 (+1=19)
Wis 11
Cha 14

If you're buying stuff for more Turn/Rebukes, Reliquary Holy Symbols are alot cheaper than Nightsticks. They're in the MiC. It is fairly easy to get 2 turns/item, and they cost 1,000 gp each.

I started a MoS handbook, but never really finished it. You can look over it here to see if you can find any useful stuff. I have to say that CC1/Archivist is a nice entry.

Yeah, the Cloistered Cleric gives high skills and 3 really awesome feats on top of turning to the Archivist (Knowledge Devotion, Extra Turning, and Extend Spell), making it better IMO than Dread Necromancer.

I did look at your thread, but I wanted this guy to be more of a melee combattant, with Spikes and Entangling Staff (or whatever the name of that level 1 swift action Ranger spell is that causes a grapple with a +8 bonus on a successful hit with a staff). I just did the divine ranged thing with my last character.

Just looking for general advice, though - what should I do with that 9th level feat? My thought is Divine Spell Power, to give spells like Magic Vestment and eventually GMW a boost, but is it worth a feat for probably at most a +1? If I don't take it, what else would be good?

And what other good spells should I be on the lookout for? Polymorph from the Adept spell list and Divine Power are coming up next level, although I haven't decided yet if I want to go with polymorph cheese or not.

And I still haven't thought too much about equipment, although I'll look into Reliquary Holy Symbols.

persist spell is useless to you at 8th level unless you have divine metamagic. am i missing something?

An Illumian with the NaenHoon sigil gets a limited version of DMM (2/day, but requires less turn attempts).

Illumians have an ability like DMM that is useable twice per day.

I don't think Divine Spellpower is worth a feat. Death Knell + Karma Bead, then cast a (Persistent) Consumptive Field and kill some rats. That should boost your caster level up plenty.

For the feat, if you can really cheese out your turn attempts via magic items, I'd consider adding another metamagic feat like Chain Spell, and then taking Divine Metamagic (Persistent Spell).

Edit: Oh yeah, get a Metamagic Rod of Extend, and apply it to your Persistent spells. Then you can have 4 going at once, instead of 2. :D

OK, I've got 27,000gp to toy around with (but that includes cost of buying and copying spells into my prayer book), and god do I hate picking magic items. Some definite stuff:

1. Ring of Counterspells, (4000gp).
2. Headband of Intellect +2 (4000gp).
3. Reliquary Holy Symbol? (I don't have MiC, can check on Friday)
4. Handy Haversack (just because...) (2000gp)
5. Wand of Lesser Vigor (750gp)
6. Metamagic Rod of Extend, Lesser (3000gp)
7. Damn it, do I really want to spend 10500gp on mithral full plate?

I don't know - I'm lost when it comes to magic item shopping!

Also, I emailed my DM my character so far, and got back, among other things:

"P.S. That's pretty twink how you got the +5 base will. Nicely done."

Got to love a DM who appreciates a little bit of optimizing ;)

EDIT: The only penalty for non-proficiency with shields/armor is that I take a penalty to attack rolls/skill checks equal to the armor check penalty, correct? So a darkwood shield (no armor check penalty) can be used without proficiency with no penalty?

1,000 gp. You'll still want to look at it in the book, though.

Hell no.

That's right.

Dig through the Bunko's Bargain Bin thread. I'd get some cheap swift/immediate action items from the MiC. For example, there is a cloak that gives you 10 resistance vs. any element as an immediate action 1xday.

So, here's what I'm thinking:

Cloak of Element Protection (1000gp)
Reliquary Holy Symbol (1000gp)
Ring of Counterspells (4000gp)
Handy Haversack (2000gp)
Metamagic Rod of Extend, Lesser (3000gp)
Headband of Intellect +2 (4000gp)
Darkwood Heavy Wooden Shield (257gp)
Breastplate (200gp)
Amulet of Health +2 (4000gp)
Ring of Sustenance (2500gp)

(A wand of lesser vigor will be coming to me from my old character, who had one left over)

For a total of 21957gp, giving me ~5000gp to save, use on scrolls to up my spell repertoire, etc.

DM said some Divine Bard spells will be available, so I'll probably persist Heroism and Divine Favor, for the following:

Show
Magic Vestment x2, Spikes, Longstrider.

AC 10 +7 breastplate +4 shield = 21

Death Knell a rat and persist Divine Favor/Heroism, for:

+12 quarterstaff, 1d6 + 13 +entangle or grapple (Entangling Staff, swift action level1 ranger spell)

Add on Dark Knowledge and Knowledge Devotion (can probably easily beat a 25 on just about anything even with a bad roll, so those numbers would probably be more along the lines of +16, 1d6+16).
