I promise I searched, but is there a resource anywhere that lists monster races (with level adjustments and/or racial hit dice) that might actually be worth playing, ie. monsters with crazy abilities and/or spells/spell-like abilities that actually compensate for the lack of class levels? I know the master player list race, but I'm looking to have fun with an offbeat and extremely focused monster character for my store's 10th-level pit battle at the end of the month.

Pixie. Always a winner.

Except for Hulking Hurler.

It's a standing challenge. I remarked that carnivore suggests Pixies for everything, then said "Well, not Hulking Hurler." Someone proceeded to say "Is that a challenge?" or some such thing.

If anyone can make a Pixie Hulking Hurler that is still Hulking Hurler-esque, you win three

The ninjas are out in force today.

Not a monster per se, but I've grown fond of the Voidmind template from MMIII. For +3 LA you get some incredibly useful stuff. Stick it on a goliath and it can make a great grappler build.

Sandstorm has the marrusault. Not sure how viable it is, but for its ECL8 pricetag, it is significantly stronger than a minotaur at any rate.

MM5 has the bladerager troll, which is stronger than the existing MM troll (both have the same ECL of 11 as well).

I have always been a fan of the ghaele, though it seems a little lackluster now that healing has become more cheap and readily accessible.

Dragons of faerun has the steel dragon wyrmling, which is actually quite reasonable for its ECL. Assuming you can use LA buyoff eventually and allow sr to scale with class lvs, it could make for a fairly potent gish build.
