Most Effective ways to boost Caster Level

May 18, 2013 16:10:59 This is a continuation of this thread. In there is the build a basic strategy. It's on post 28 sadly. Anyway it was brought to my attention that my Caster Level for my buffs is really low and any higher lvl NPC caster could just drop a GDM on me and I'd be screwed. What are the most effective ways of overcoming this with the least investment.

May 19, 2013 5:40:49 Well, a determined DM could probably do that anyway - see the Dispelling and Counterspelling Compilation for ways to dispel and defend against it.

The Ring of Enduring Arcana is probably the easiest way to defend vs dispells, but you want a high CL anyway. The simplest options are the Orange Prism Ioun Stone which adds +1 (it's 30k) and the Ring of Arcane Might (I think, from Complete Mage IIRC) which also adds +1, but only for arcane (it's only 20k... but it's not a wondrous item, so harder to craft).

There are more cunning ways, like I think there is a Bard song which can help you etc but a +2 to CL and a further +4 vs dispels is not a bad place to start (note that an NPC probably has a level or two headstart on you, and even if his odds of dispelling are low, he can probably screw up one or two of your buffs).

Another good one is the Craft Magic Tattoo spell (Spell Compendium) but note the 100gp material cost.

This "would" be a serious problem
if your DMs adventure took place on:
The Plane Of NPC Wiz/Sorcs Always +1 Level On You Encounters Only (tm)
... technically that (tm) is pending.

Chances are, you get 1 encounter your
whole adventuring career, against a
higher level npc caster ... that also
has gone out of his(her/its) way to
select GDM instead of all the other
juicy ways to beat the snot out of the rest of the party.

May 22, 2013 6:55:24 I don't think you even need UMD to use the Bead of Karma. Of course, it's only for a boost when you need it, or for all your long-duration buffs (you can use it in the morning whilst casting your Persistant and all-day spells). That makes it a bit dispelling-specific, and at 20k, the Ring of Enduring Arcana looks more attractive. Of course, you could get both.
