Hello everyone!

I'm making a Mul survivalist type character for a new campaign, and I'm looking for help on building the most effective character using the theme and flavor that I picture for him. Here's some background information.

Character
------------

I picture him as an ultimate survivalist. You put him in a location, and he knows exactly what to do. Sort of the Bear Grylls of DnD. The setting is a futuristic fantasy/scifi blend, so magic and dragons with shapeships, planets and guns. In combat, I imagine him wield a gladius type sword and a pistol of some sort, teleporting around the battle field, enhancing his physical abilities with psionics.

House Rules
----------------

3 feats at level 1
We get a new feat every even level.
We can use any book, WotC or 3rd party and Dragon Magazines, just no homebrew stuff off wikis and such.

I was thinking of making him the classic Ranger-Psion-Slayer path, but I don't know if that is the best choice and I thought asking around might give me some ideas.

Any advice you have would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I just found the Horizon Walker in the DMG, this might be a good class to move toward as well. Full BaB, and if I get Planar Terrain (Shifting) I can use Dimension Door every 1d4 rounds. ANy thoughts on this PrC?

Or maybe something with Soulknife? But the lack of actual powers there makes me hesitant to pick it up.

1 - What stats for the Mul are you using? The only 3.5 Mul I'm aware of was in Dragon 318... And on a related note, what are the guns you're using and how do they work?

2 - Generally speaking, the horizon walker isn't worth writing home about except in core-only environments (where it can be deceptively useful for a non-caster). Thematically it's a great survivor and a good "Grylls" (or Les Stroud), but usually you're better off taking a more specialized survivalist (especially because so much about "survival" isn't quite in your class features but rather just a part of the Survival skill).

3 - The soulknife, as written, is gimped. There are numerous attempts to update it; the most popular of these was handled by Dreamscarred Press (publishers of the de-facto Pathfinder psionic system) in their first book, Untapped Potential. (Full disclosure: That version of the soulknife first appeared on these boards by BlaineTog, and I was the lead author of the book.)

4 -  Have you looked into the Ardent (Complete Psionic)? It's a very good single-class gish, and it fits perfectly with the Dark Sun setting (though you're in a custom one, the Mul is tied to DS in the same way the half-giant and thri-kreen are).

There's a few other points (i.e. ability scores), but in general those are up to you. (The more you put in to your build here, the more we can help and the more you can expect to get back.)

For the Mul, I was planning on using a LA 0 version of the Athas.org version. The version in Dragon Magazine is similar, but a little different.

Here's what the DM and I ended up with for a LA 0 Mul:

+2 Str, +2 Con, -2 Cha
30 ft movement
Darkvision 30ft
Tireless (+4 to fatigue checks due to exertion, and saving throws against fatigue spells)
Dwarven Blood

For atts, we're using a point buy:

All atts start at 8, with 30 free points to distribute between them on a 1 to 1 ratio.

Looking over the Horizon Walker, I agree. It seems to be much better for a non-caster. The Soulknife I like, but it seems like a class that can be replaced with the right power selection.

The Ardent is an interesting choice, and the Freedom mantle has Dimension Hop, which is in the right direction for what I'm looking for. I'm going to read over the guide you posted and see what they're all about.

For the character, I'm building him from scratch right now, so I don't have a lot to go with other than what I want from him. I love psionics, so I'd like to use psionics. I want him to be a highly mobile melee fighter with psionics that enhance his physical fighting ability and allow him to teleport around the battlefield.

For the concept, it would probably be good going with a class that gives skills like: climb, jump, swim, survival. Stuff that would help you be an outdoorsy survivalist.

That's why my original thought was a ranger/psion(nomad)/slayer. Maybe scout would be better, for skirmish? Skirmish and Psionic weapon sound like they could be a good damage combo.
