Multiclass EXP penalties and PrCs Question

Hey all-

I've looked around trying to find a definitive answer for this, but haven't had any luck so far. My question is simple (I hope).

Assuming normal rules for Multiclassing, if any of your classes (After the first, assuming favored class) are more than one level apart you get a 20% exp penalty.

My question is this. If I build:
Show
Conjurer 1
Conjurer 2
Conjurer 3
Conjurer 4
Conjurer 5
Master Specialist 1
Master Specialist 2
Master Specialist 3
Master Specialist 4
Master Specialist 5
Master Specialist 6
Master Specialist 7
Master Specialist 8
Master Specialist 9
Master Specialist 10
Archmage 1
Archmage 2
Archmage 3
Archmage 4
Archmage 5

There are no XP penalties for PrCs, so you're safe whether you finish it or not.

By the way, you can enter Master Specialist after level 3 (after level 1 if you have use Precocious Apprentice or Improved Sigil Krau)

Wow, no penalty at all? That's sort of enexpectedly good. Do you know what book I could shove in front of a skeptical Dm to substantiate that?

It was in the 3.0 DMG, but that line was omitted in the 3.5 DMG. Not surprising, given the shoddy editing of the 3.5 DMG (see the Epic Druid section for what I mean).

By the way, I lied. You need to be level 2 wizard to get the skill pre-requisites for Master Specialist. But other than that, you have to be Human with Precocious Apprentice and Spell Focus to get into MS after Wiz 2.

Thanks for the help.
I'm going all the way to wizard 5 because I either want Spontaneous Divination or Domain Granter Power (Magic). I haven't decided.

As Andy said, it's not actually in a book. They accidently left it out. This was explained either in the FAQ or DMG errata, though.

www.d20srd.org

Has the SRD, which are the core rules. Go to classes => prestige classes and it says it there.

Here is a direct link

Prestige Classes

Prestige classes offer a new form of multiclassing. Unlike the basic classes, characters must meet Requirements before they can take their first level of a prestige class. The rules for level advancement apply to this system, meaning the first step of advancement is always choosing a class. If a character does not meet the Requirements for a prestige class before that first step, that character cannot take the first level of that prestige class. Taking a prestige class does not incur the experience point penalties normally associated with multiclassing.

Definitions Of Terms

Here are definitions of some terms used in this section.
Base Class

One of the standard eleven classes.
Caster Level

Generally equal to the number of class levels (see below) in a spellcasting class. Some prestige classes add caster levels to an existing class.
Character Level

The total level of the character, which is the sum of all class levels held by that character.
Class Level

The level of a character in a particular class. For a character with levels in only one class, class level and character level are the same.

Spontaneous Divination- Awesome.

Domain Granted Power (Magic)... why?

Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful.

Magic domain allows use of triggered magic items from prohibited schools, so Focused Specialist stings a lot less.

Your Precocious apprentice tactics is a no go till level 2. Look at the skill requirements.

The skill ranks are still 5 and 5, but you need to be human to grab Precocious Apprentice *and* Spell Focus.

As for using prohibited spell-trigger/completion items, it sounds nice but it's far too expensive to keep up.

And he is going FS, so PA doesn't shift when he hits CL 3rd.

I don't see what one has to do with the other.

I don't see what one has to do with the other.

The wording on the both of them allows you to cast 2nd level spells, and as such qualify for PrCs despite rulings otherwise. I detail this heavily here. Basically, the trick is you take PA, which grants 1 2nd level spell slot. You then use Focused Specialist to delete that slot, and replace it with two of your specialist school. Due to the wording of the ACF, this works, as losing something isn't using it.

This allows a 1st level Wizard to cast 2nd level spells. Also, when you get the ability to cast 2nd level spells, the slot from PA is still missing, so it doesn't shift. This works best for Mystic Theurge or Arcane Hierophant entry, but it is a nice trick to know for other builds. Makes the Wizard just that much more potent, IMO.

Regarless of whether or not it "shifted" you'd get the same result, one extra level-two slot at third level.
