| #1awaken_D_M_golemMay 07, 2008 16:46:27 | NDA'ers : 4th Edition has gone to print, so ... any of you want to "out" yourselves ??? Kinda like when Tsuyoshikentsu and Tempest Stormwind confirmed they had worked on the Rules Compendium. And, uh, you wanna give us some hints ... ... pretty please. |
| #2logicninjaMay 07, 2008 17:36:21 | NDA'ers : 4th Edition has gone to print, so ... any of you want to "out" yourselves ??? I confirmed that first, dammit! And I'm sure they'll out themselves whenever 4E actually appears on the shelves. |
| #3ChristopherGrovesMay 07, 2008 17:37:30 | Or if they get actual instruction that the NDA has lifted and not prodding by anxious board members. Or if they actually succomb to the prodding of anxious board members. Or if they forget they signed an NDA. |
| #4mittenninjaMay 07, 2008 17:38:32 | Or use Iron Heart Surge to remove the NDA. |
| #5awaken_D_M_golemMay 07, 2008 17:38:44 | Oops, my bad. { ... by the way, I wasn't talking about out outing, I was just, well I'll stop ... } But that's the thing, there's always a chance for MORE glory ... |
| #622_Over_7May 07, 2008 18:04:16 | Or use Iron Heart Surge to remove the NDA. Heh. |
| #7eldritch_lordMay 07, 2008 20:30:12 | Or use Iron Heart Surge to remove the NDA. Wouldn't the "no talking" part of the NDA stop them from making a Roar of EffortTM to do that? |
| #8mittenninjaMay 07, 2008 21:31:37 | Wouldn't the "no talking" part of the NDA stop them from making a Roar of EffortTM to do that? Ah, but the NDA stops you from disclosing information. It says nothing about being unable to vocalize anything. |
| #9surrealMay 07, 2008 21:56:37 | Feels like someone should be quoting Fight Club here... |
| #10PrevinMay 07, 2008 22:09:46 | Feels like someone should be quoting Fight Club here... His name is Robert Paulson. ;) |
| #11detectivejabscoMay 07, 2008 22:19:56 | You can't quote what you can't talk about. |
| #12tsuyoshikentsuMay 07, 2008 22:20:46 | And the first rule of 4E testing is, YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT 4E TESTING. |

| #21autumn_sereneMay 08, 2008 12:06:50 | And, uh, you wanna give us some hints ... ![]() How about not? That should be pretty obvious that even if they say who they are (which at this point may be ok- I will find out though) you know that secrets are just asking for trouble, right? I'm curious though how it became public knowledge that there were CO reviewers? Also, to be clear, there was no CO playtest, just a review. |
| #22PrevinMay 08, 2008 12:12:36 | I'm curious though how it became public knowledge that there were CO reviewers? Well, no one said anything about 'reviewers' until you, but given that we know there have been CO people involved on previous projects, it was a safe bet that some were involved in 4th ed in some capacity. The OP seems to have assumed play testers as I did while reading the thread until I got to your post. |
| #23BloodDragonMay 08, 2008 13:41:00 | Kinda like when Tsuyoshikentsu and Tempest Stormwind confirmed they had worked on the Rules Compendium. Wait what? Really? When/where was that?! Jeez you go two weeks without looking at the boards and look what you miss. Guess that's why TS "Current Project" was "Top Secert" for a good long time. |

| #26jameswilliamogleMay 08, 2008 13:44:58 | Here's some snipits for you; I don't really care if I get banned for this: Show There's Fighters, Clerics, Rogues, Wizards, and some other stuff. There's also equipment. There's also magic. Rules for fighting are included. |

| #30WyvernhandMay 08, 2008 15:53:33 | Screw the movie, read the book! Much much much better (and better for you!). |
| #31tshernMay 08, 2008 15:57:22 | Also, to be clear, there was no CO playtest, just a review. Understandable. I, however, like the fact that we have been discussing the official errata here on the boards and an actual WotC representative, who is working with those came in talked to us about them. Moreover, Sage's idea of tackling the Book of Heavily Debated Topics was great even if some of us want to disagree with his opinions. Often times WotC just seems like a corporation that publishes books without caring about the actual mechanical content, but those two instances changed my opinion and while I love digging up loopholes and breakability to amuse myself, it is great to see that there are real people reading this board. All in all, we have so many active users, a level of collective intelligence and enthusiasm that I have hard time believing that Wizards of the Coast team can actually match it. That is why I appreciate the fact that some of you people come here every now and then and tell you are real people and know that there are keens fans such as us. To you Autumn_serene and all of you who have contributed to the occasional visits on this board, I present my honest gratitude. Keep up the good work with 4e. |
| #32tsuyoshikentsuMay 08, 2008 17:12:44 | ....while I love digging up loopholes and breakability to amuse myself, it is great to see that there are real people reading this board. ...As opposed to us not-real people? |
| #33autumn_sereneMay 08, 2008 17:26:26 | Ok, I asked and was told they'd prefer to wait on all playtesters/reviewers "outing" themselves just yet, but that they will be able to soon. I think there is going to be some sort of officially announcement type thing. FYI. |
| #34Dictum_MortuumMay 08, 2008 17:39:23 | Ok, I asked and was told they'd prefer to wait on all playtesters/reviewers "outing" themselves just yet, but that they will be able to soon. | #35ChristopherGrovesMay 08, 2008 18:13:59 | ...As opposed to us not-real people? The fact that tshern can distinguish between the real people and the robots is scary. I can't do that yet. |

| #41radicaltaoistMay 08, 2008 22:36:35 | Actually, the .secretproject in Tempest's sig is something he and I have been working on, here and there, before 4e was even announced. Entirely unrelated. |
| #42ShakaUVMMay 08, 2008 23:43:37 | I'm happily breaking things in the Pathfinder beta, does that count? ;) |
| #43awaken_D_M_golemMay 09, 2008 14:23:41 | Yes, that counts !! Hey look, we've been updated: Sub-Forums : D & D Previous Editions I'm feeling a little "previous" today myself. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to put the noodle in someone's head that they should break an NDA on my account. But I'm really talking about board Personas, not the so called "real" person behind them. I was quite upset to learn that Tsuyoshikentsu was "really" named T-something. ACK !! I've blocked it out. It's kinda like Jay-Z is "officially" Shawn Carver. That sucks. I didn't/don't wanna know. I am willing to at least ... try ... to figure out what I should call Wiz-Autu-Meg-erene, over on the Can'tspellgameologists.board. Have you guys seen the posters who use the same avatar as Khan ?? It's just plain old weird, and only scares me for a moment, and then it doesn't. |

| #46eldritch_lordMay 09, 2008 17:43:22 | Actually, drop the "Wiz". I'm no longer a WizO. Well, the WizO_Autumn link in your sig still goes to the WizO_Autumn profile, so...you're technically still a WizO, right? Or at least, there is somewhere a WizO_Autumn; whether you log in and/or use that account is another issue. Going on a tangent for a moment, do you mind my asking why/how not? I know there was a big to-do over the Volunteer Lead/Forum So-and-so/Community Whatsit thing, and that Gamer_Zer0 has been...less than competent at handling the transition, but I haven't really kept up to date with who's who and how things are with WizOs now. |

Or at least, there is somewhere a WizO_Autumn; whether you log in and/or use that account is another issue. On semantics. How do I love thee. I was WizO Autumn for 7 years but a week ago today lost that title. The Community service program is changing and requires many more hours a week than I can provide. I have a normal, full time plus job plus many side projects, one of which is my podcast BrilliantGameologists.com and forums BrilliantGameologists.com/boards. Community Management has nothing to do with CS. I'm under G0 for the VCL thing which is also expiring in a week and I have to reapply for. |

| #54lostpassworddoesnotworkMay 10, 2008 0:05:33 | In 4E, warforge have a racial power to aquire one encounter power from any boss level monster. At paragon teir they can summon a red construct dog, said dog has three 1/day powers, flight, a +4 bonus to jump checks, and can grant a swim speed. At epic, the dog can fuse with the warforged into one of two forms. melee-bot (working name) which has unarmed strikes at a monk's level, the other allows for a fly speed. You did not see this information, nor is this information true in anyway. However, there is at least one game is like this and I have played them within the last week. |
| #55squashmonsterMay 10, 2008 0:37:34 | I can't believe I got three sentences into that before I got the joke. Well played. (Also: before anybody thinks you can turn the warforged into Pun-Pun using that first ability, Wizards already stopped it. Once per adventure, a warforged trips and loses all his acquired powers. Sorry guys.) |

| #57warningfireMay 10, 2008 2:23:53 | All I know is healing will be more readily available. I don't know about you guys but I don't go around healing people as a druid or cleric. I do that as a kobold favored soul of talos because most my fun is out of combat anyway since I have 8 intelligence and 8 wisdom. Me: "I set up a fire and dance on it." DM: "some town citizens point at you and a man in white robes draws his sword and hustles towards you and a white horse appears from thin air" Me: "I keep dancing" DM: "Defend yourself!" Me: "I run away into my house and try to wake my friends!" DM: "the man draws a fan and there's suddently a storm and a gust of wind blows you towards him roll a fortitude save" Me: "10+10 = 20 woot" DM: "you get blown back 60 feet" Me: "A STORM ZOMG TALOS WANTS ME TO FIGHT!!! TALOS!!!!" Anyway druids can heal as well as clerics and other classes get better healing options. Since no one likes to play a healer in my group I usually play PW, Crusader, Warlock, any Divine, rogues with UMD, bards, and gnome illusionists (if you get hurt as an illusionist after round 1 something is wrong with your illusion skills). I wish I could play a barbarian or something and get a heal for the next fight. grumble grumble. BELT OF HEALING IS ONLY 6D6 A DAY! |

S'true. I'll let you guys know when it's done. Blocked by RT's Personal Mind Blank. One of your factors was "defeats Mind Blank" but you failed to include "defeats Personal Mind Blank", forgetting that RT is psionic. It gets better. I have 9 levels in Slayer (reflavored; my enemy of choice is "psiconics r bbrooken!!1" trolls). What do you think the fantasy equivalent of the Turing Test would be? If a shadow conjuration human can fool a wizard into thinking it's a regular human.... Nahh. Easy extra credit with a little enchantment on top. |

There's no such thing as 4e playtesting. |
| #62cyrocloudMay 10, 2008 20:01:32 | Out of curiosity why is it such a big deal to wizards if playtesters talk on a open forum about some of the mechanics and their takes on it. Their are only two reasons I can think of one, it realy sucks/no self esteem in their work or the the other being they wish to have a type of glory created by the fact that everyone sees it at the same time/they show us the light. Either way, I'm loosing confidence in the people who publish this game which thousands if not millions of geeks have cherished world wide. Then again I have very little background in the subtle arts of advertisment and economics. |
| #63ChristopherGrovesMay 10, 2008 20:08:49 | If someone were to know all the subtle mechanics, terminology, etc. (or worse yet, have an electronic or scanned copy of the book) it could impact sales. True story ... I have a friend of mine who's a web developer and wrote a book on a popular scripting toolset. There are formulas and expectations of sales, etc. both for the initial run and for the second printings, etc. Initial run was locked at a base amount, the real kicker was seeing how much the second and subsequent runs would be. We live in the computer age. Someone threw a PDF of the file on a few sites a month before the publication date. Initial run was fine ... but those subsequent runs were lacking because everyone could nab the book for free if they really wanted. Sure, if you wanted a hard copy you bought it anyway ... but the great many computer dudes that didn't mind the softcopy (indexed and searchable no less) just didn't buy it. |

If a shadow conjuration human can fool a wizard into thinking it's a regular human.... Any Wizard worth his Int score would never be fooled by that, 120% or not. | #76ChristopherGrovesMay 11, 2008 15:12:09 | Christopher Groves is, not surprisingly, my real name. |
| #77cyrocloudMay 11, 2008 15:16:32 | huhhh...You would of thought someone would of thought to check that. So does it look good, bad or ugly (indifferent would also be an exceptable answer.). |
| #78tsuyoshikentsuMay 11, 2008 15:31:47 | You mean you try to use planar bubble? The supernatural ability planar bubble? The supernatural-as-in-can't-be-used-while- you're-in-my-antimagic-field ability planar bubble? Mmm...nope, sorry, Newton and Einstein are still winning. ;) Initiate of Mystra, then, if you must. But it's an interesting question -- what happens if I start it outside the AMF and walk in? |
| #79eldritch_lordMay 11, 2008 15:50:57 | Initiate of Mystra, then, if you must. Well, since you remembered to post here, I would posit that the Realms we inhabit here are not Forgotten, and thus that you don't have access to that. But I digress. But it's an interesting question -- what happens if I start it outside the AMF and walk in? You hope that the buffs you've cast in your infinite free time haven't expired? |

| #85ratpickMay 12, 2008 5:30:10 | A friend of mine who is also a fellow CharOp'er is on that list. According to him he got into the playtest because he knows how to find loopholes and how to bend and break any system. Grats to him! |
| #86fil_kearneyMay 12, 2008 10:24:57 | Christopher Groves is, not surprisingly, my real name. That's strange... Fil Kearney is MY real name, but I'm not on that list at all...? The sage has just ruled that this results in you getting banned from playing DnD. He has also ruled that all the cake is gone. |

| #102tsuyoshikentsuMay 13, 2008 1:31:57 | If I admitted to being part of the 4e troubleshooting group, Tsuyo, would you be jealous? :P Go ahead! Why not turn this into a "publicly trample on Tsuyo's feelings" thread? It's not like Chris Sims didn't already COMPLETELY RUIN MY FOREVER for me; what could you possibly do? Jesus Christ, Sims, at least LogicNinja was man enough to tell me eventually. And if you had a f****** beef with my "tone," maybe I would have done something about it if you had said, I don't know, "I don't like your tone, Tsuyo." Instead of, I don't know. Inviting everyone back except me. It's not like I suddenly stopped knowing the rules better than you, or being a good optimizer. You probably think this is rude, and it probably is. But G-d Almighty, I think I have reason at this point. |
| #103reisMay 13, 2008 1:49:18 | I would suggest using the divine blast SLD, as a start. and then drinking. a lot. actually i don't have any good advice, but this is fairly amusing to us Co nubs. carry on, i'm sure there will be the same thing going on 7 years from now when 5th edition comes out and is an even bigger unbalanced cash cow. |
| #10422_Over_7May 13, 2008 2:40:13 | Uh...relax? |
| #105autumn_sereneMay 13, 2008 7:23:10 | Go ahead! Why not turn this into a "publicly trample on Tsuyo's feelings" thread? It's not like Chris Sims didn't already COMPLETELY RUIN MY FOREVER for me; what could you possibly do? Seriously relax. Chris Sims wasn't involved in choosing this round. The first review was incredibly upfront that there would be no warnings- it was behave and be constructive from the getgo or you'd be booted. The guidelines on how to review were extremely clear as well in terms of being constructive and not negative. Given that the 4e round needed 10 times the diplomacy of the first, every word was critiqued in making the decision. |

The first review was incredibly upfront that there would be no warnings- it was behave and be constructive from the getgo or you'd be booted. The guidelines on how to review were extremely clear as well in terms of being constructive and not negative. So...how does one get into these rounds? Back in my M:TG days I would look at new sets and instantly see infinite combos with cards from the same set, so while I'm probably not qualified to write, I'd be good at reviewing. |

The first review was incredibly upfront that there would be no warnings- it was behave and be constructive from the getgo or you'd be booted. The guidelines on how to review were extremely clear as well in terms of being constructive and not negative. I was trying to make a point, which is that repackaging what amounted to the SRD was kind of a bad thing to do. I have to admit, I was kind of confused what our role was there, since no one wanted to hear my opinion and you guys had basically copy-pasted the SRD plus some expanded skills from the Completes. Big, BIG sorry to Chris, btw. I had no idea that there was anyone else involved on picking people for this project, so in my mind blame instantly went your way. |
| #108aethiosMay 13, 2008 13:05:43 | I was trying to make a point, which is that repackaging what amounted to the SRD was kind of a bad thing to do. So... Can we still turn this thread into the "Publicly trample Tsuyo's feelings" thread, or no? If not, can we make a new thread that does this? |
| #109jameswilliamogleMay 13, 2008 13:32:10 | hrm... how much has the game changed since the CO playtest? Did input have a major impact on the game mechanics between playtest and print? (not justifying, just very curious) I'm curious how much CO'ing could be done, how many new projects people have already been working on... |
| #11022_Over_7May 13, 2008 13:59:49 | hrm... how much has the game changed since the CO playtest? Did input have a major impact on the game mechanics between playtest and print? | #111logicninjaMay 13, 2008 14:01:14 | If you notice carefully, you'll see that there was no actual playtesting. It was just a review. Shoulda taken Quick Reconnoiter. |
| #112ChristopherGrovesMay 13, 2008 14:18:53 | The "CO review" is separate and distinct from anyone who was involved in the playtesting process. |
| #113tsuyoshikentsuMay 13, 2008 15:09:56 | To everyone: I've calmed down now, after having a talk with Autumn. We're all cool now. Well, except for Aethios. He'll never be cool, because he's just that lame. ;) (jk, man. I actually have no idea who you are, so hi, nice to meet you.) |
| #114awaken_D_M_golemMay 13, 2008 15:48:31 | Well, I guess I'll never get asked, what with the "f" thread that disappeared, and now ~leading Tsuyo to his damnation ... Lemme get this straight, the CO guys only reviewed the 4E material ?? |
| #115skydragonknightMay 13, 2008 16:53:07 | Top 100 Things I would do if I ever ... 12. ... They're learning. |
| #116tsuyoshikentsuMay 13, 2008 17:24:52 | I don't think there is any chance of [CO] reviewing anything again... No they're not. |
| #117lostpassworddoesnotworkMay 13, 2008 17:28:31 | *kicks Tsuyo while he is down for the hell of it.* At least you got turned down. I was never considered ![]() *** 4E is going to be just as bad as 3E. The OP board will find the flaws and R&D/Errata will ignore them. Just like the good ole days. |
| #118logicninjaMay 13, 2008 17:32:26 | 4E is going to be just as bad as 3E. The OP board will find the flaws and R&D/Errata will ignore them. Just like the good ole days. I find "just as bad" unlikely, given that while some powers may be better than others, you won't have the geometric vs. linear progression difference between, all classes are on an approximately similar offensive footing (attacking at 1/2 level + stat, +miscellaneous bonuses like proficiency, implement, etc) vs. a defense (which don't have the big disparities 3.X saves did, it seems from the previews), all classes have the same number of at-will/encounter/daily powers, etc. |
| #119alisatanMay 13, 2008 17:40:49 | I don't think there is any chance of [CO] reviewing anything again... Why not? |
| #120tsuyoshikentsuMay 13, 2008 17:42:34 | Yeah, but now we'll be working with the 1+ books a month design philosophy from the beginning, and they'll have to include time to translate things to iDungeon (a far better name, IMO) as well. The core basis may be gone, but the foundation for shoddy work remains. |
| #121lostpassworddoesnotworkMay 13, 2008 17:43:17 | I was talking about how WotC will react when something game breaking is found rather than as a whole. 3E's core books are as balanced as the mess on the floor. It's not hard to improve on that when making a new edition... |
| #122tsuyoshikentsuMay 13, 2008 17:52:41 | @LPDNW: I've seen no evidence that WotC will do anything other than maintain their current stance, which is in Optimization-Fu known as the Stance of the Ostrich. (The same one you see in Book of Heavily Debated Topics and What's A DM To Do? a lot.)Why not? *Shrug* Ask her. |
| #123andyjamesMay 13, 2008 17:56:22 | Why not? Egos, man. Egos :D |
| #124ChristopherGrovesMay 13, 2008 19:29:03 | I find "just as bad" unlikely, given that while some powers may be better than others, you won't have the geometric vs. linear progression difference between, all classes are on an approximately similar offensive footing (attacking at 1/2 level + stat, +miscellaneous bonuses like proficiency, implement, etc) vs. a defense (which don't have the big disparities 3.X saves did, it seems from the previews), all classes have the same number of at-will/encounter/daily powers, etc. Agree. The announcement on the website confirms the NDA is still in effect until June-whatever, but I can say that power balance was a huge focus item in the playtesting. |
| #125Blade2718May 13, 2008 20:35:37 | Why not? Doubtless because they didn't the like the reminder that there were people out there with potentially (not definitively) better ideas than they had. |
| #126bozwevialMay 13, 2008 20:48:18 | @LPDNW: I've seen no evidence that WotC will do anything other than maintain their current stance, which is in Optimization-Fu known as the Stance of the Ostrich. Better than the Stance of the Lemming. |

| #128skydragonknightMay 13, 2008 22:02:51 | Doubtless because they didn't the like the reminder that there were people out there with potentially (not definitively) better ideas than they had. So...job security then? It's not like I'd write anything. Just give a little advice to help with the editing process. After all, if two heads are better than one, then those two heads with ten heads helping out should be even better, so long as the ten heads aren't attatched to a Hydra trying to eat you. |
| #129aethiosMay 13, 2008 22:20:20 | To everyone: I've calmed down now, after having a talk with Autumn. We're all cool now. I'm usually on the Previous Edition's Forums. I just lurk here now and again. Nice to meet you too... And... for that whole Aethios lame comment thing...::sulks socks off:: |
| #130radicaltaoistMay 13, 2008 22:22:51 | To everyone: I've calmed down now, after having a talk with Autumn. We're all cool now. I hope so; my intent was to be joking and lighthearted. I didn't meant to belittle. If it's any consolation, I was told that I would have to lighten up on my language and tone if I wanted to help with 4e. Yes, me. You know, that nasty RT guy who's always with the putdowns and everything. Besides, we didn't see that much info really. What we got was not just the unfinished product, but the hot-off-the-press first draft with little to no editing and a lot of highlighted parts saying "we're gonna/we have to change this". We didn't even get enough info to run playtest games of our own; just enough to analyze areas where optimization-fu could break stuff and where numbers needed to be crunched elsewhere. So no, you don't need to be jealous over my entry into a troubleshooting session as limited as it was. Now, getting to party with Autumn, stembolt, and a bunch of their buddies for New Year's Eve (since I went to meet in person to discuss the document), that might qualify for envy material. :P EDIT: Though it sucks to think they won't be pulling on the COB for help in the future. We could be a very valuable resource and I hope they don't waste that. |
| #131surrealMay 13, 2008 22:26:21 | I think a lot of people are jumping around because they wanted a piece of the pie once they found out the Jones' had some. Just because we're the resident rule monkeys doesn't give us any entitlement whatsoever to the reviewing/playtesting/etc process. As an obvious corollary, we as the CO community have no entitlement to that either. If WotC grabbed people from CO for reviewing/playtesting/etc, it was likely more a function of them getting input from our demographic than anything else. |
| #132tsuyoshikentsuMay 13, 2008 22:28:03 | I hope so; my intent was to be joking and lighthearted. I didn't meant to belittle. You know, that nasty RT guy who's always with the putdowns and everything. In retrospect, RT, that's pretty obvious. But imagine for a second you're the ONE GUY they left out of the FOURTH EDITION PLAYERS HANDBOOK review. I mean, that would definitely be something to tell my kinds about. You know, if I ever find a girl, and somehow convince her to bear my spawn, and they all turn out as lame as I am. You know what, never mind. |

| #136tsuyoshikentsuMay 13, 2008 22:38:51 | I didn't get consulted about anything. All you tsuyoshikentsus can stop whinlng. Well, yes. This is because, despite your uberness, you're still a n00b. Max out diplomacy and perform (comedy) and (nce nce nce) and you are set... As the joke above clearly shows, all are cross-class skills for me. |

| #140logicninjaMay 13, 2008 22:45:29 | We didn't even get enough info to run playtest games of our own; just enough to analyze areas where optimization-fu could break stuff and where numbers needed to be crunched elsewhere. Like spotting Wall of Fire/Wall of Ice. |
| #141skydragonknightMay 13, 2008 22:55:31 | I think a lot of people are jumping around because they wanted a piece of the pie once they found out the Jones' had some. Just because we're the resident rule monkeys doesn't give us any entitlement whatsoever to the reviewing/playtesting/etc process. As an obvious corollary, we as the CO community have no entitlement to that either. Ah good point. Reflecting upon what COers were invited to help on, we likely won't be invited back until a rules-heavy supplement comes out. So probably 4.0 PHB 2 at earliest. |
| #142aethiosMay 13, 2008 23:02:09 | Ah good point. Reflecting upon what COers were invited to help on, we likely won't be invited back until a rules-heavy supplement comes out. So probably 4.0 PHB 2 at earliest. I still personally believe that to be true. Though, when creating a brand-new edition like this, it is important, I think, to have the word of the actual players, not only in the "how well can I optimize this" section, but also in the actual game-play aspect of it. Eh. |
| #143tsuyoshikentsuMay 13, 2008 23:47:28 | Dude! Jack of All Trades + Bardic Knack! Either that or four levels in Swashbuckler. Don't tell me, let me guess. All that on top of an Inspire Courage build? G-dDAMMIT! I KNEW I was missing something for our CO game! |

| #145autumn_sereneMay 14, 2008 9:00:45 | The future of a CO review committee is purely speculation on my part. Hopeful of course, but I pounded at quite a few doors to get this one to happen and found a sea of red tape. We sort of snuck in through it. They may be more wary of our scheming ways now. Turns out a could live very close to me and I game weekly with folks I first met on these boards. I'm very strict about using real names when I'm face to face with someone. No computer screen = no screen name. Every online persona is a persona- even if it matches closely to your real personality. I'd hope folks didn't think my personality was limited to my former WizO persona. You can introduce yourself as your SN, but then it's on to real names for me. |

Doctor: "What is your name?" new tagalong: "romanadelauramonallase...." Doctor: "That won't do." new tagalong: "why not?" Doctor: "Because by the time I finish shouting, 'lookout, romnadelaurayadayada', whatever monster I was warning you about would have already eaten you." New tagalong: "Call me Romana." But I'm a nick-namey kinda guy. I chose my own name to be online since I used to do freelance art. I know most folks don't like sending their real real identity across the intarweb, but branding is important to the self-employed. I think CrG (ChristopherGroves) is the same way. I feel bad for folks that are obsessed with spelling out the full username of posters. maybe I'm just lazy? I'm leaving the invite open for anyone in Seattle to drop me a line. |

So, I guess I'm used to it. Still, with a name like "Piggy K." it might be a little bit odd if people called me that. It isn't even an online name I use much, more one I tossed on here because my old name got lost when the boards switched over, and I didn't feel like resurrecting it... |

I'm curious if you guys saw the same issues I did... but I suppose we can't talk about that for a few weeks more. I'm not a regular poster on the CO boards, but do like to read it. But since most of my actual play time is with the RPGA, I can't really take advantage of many of the rules options people on the CO board take for granted and stick mainly with the core + complete book series. I think talking about the specifics (even with others involved in the project) is a no-no. I can't imagine that that's the case, seeing as how we all discussed it with each other while making the review. It's not "disclosure" if the person already knows (which is why we can talk about publically released stuff, like, say, the Elven Accuracy racial power). But fair enough. |
| #210ChristopherGrovesMay 17, 2008 22:11:45 | People on this board got to review the books but not contribute to playtesting? Some. I was not in the review, but I was (am?) a playtester. |

It's not "disclosure" if the person already knows (which is why we can talk about publically released stuff, like, say, the Elven Accuracy racial power). But fair enough. Well, playtesters got different instructions then. I knew playtesters from other groups but was instructed not to talk to them, keeping discussion to my specific group. As far as I'm aware, the only change from our instructions is that we can now reveal that we were playtesters. I've got to say though that it was interesting to see things change from our initial copies to the final draft...and things that didn't. |
| #212ChristopherGrovesMay 18, 2008 8:57:20 | Well, playtesters got different instructions then. I knew playtesters from other groups but was instructed not to talk to them, keeping discussion to my specific group. Yep, pretty specifically we were instructed not to talk to anyone. I suspect that was so that the various tactics we stumbled upon, things we did, etc. would hit a wider set of options whereas if we said "yeah we just did this" and everyone else "did that" it would exercise a smaller portion of the rules. |
| #213awaken_D_M_golemMay 18, 2008 14:35:27 | "H1 Keep on the Shadowfell" was in my local Barnes & Noble Friday night. Anybody get it? |
| #214CdrcJsnMay 18, 2008 19:29:30 | Apparently every single large bookseller released it early... Tons of reviews already at Enworld.org. Just be aware that the book was sent to the printers while the PHB was still in flux. There's quite a few errors in the product that WotC plans on releasing Errata for, on DDI on the 20th (when it was supposed to come out). |

| #216Omen_of_PeaceMay 20, 2008 6:11:17 | You mean WotC will release errata for CPsi on the 20th !? :P |
| #217eldritch_lordMay 20, 2008 18:12:42 | You mean WotC will release errata for CPsi on the 20th !? Yes, CPsi errate will be here on June 20th. Now, whether it's June 20th of this year is another issue entirely. |
| #218tshernMay 20, 2008 18:27:05 | Out of curiosity, how did you people get to review the books and/or playtest them? Did you apply for it here on the forums or what? |
| #219logicninjaMay 20, 2008 18:42:07 | Out of curiosity, how did you people get to review the books and/or playtest them? Did you apply for it here on the forums or what? For the reviewing, thank Autumn. She worked back when the RC was in production to get a CharOp team to review it; we were PMed with the offer. I have no idea how the RC team was selected (I didn't consider myself one of the big names, certainly; it might've been my Batman guide). The 4E team consisted mostly of people on the RC team, and existed at all, again, thanks to Autumn's efforts (which apparently involved dealing with a large quantity of red tape). |

Thanks for the explanation. Quite interesting to see that a CO team was combined specifically for this purpose. I suppose that tells a little something. |
| #221logicninjaMay 20, 2008 18:51:26 | The RC is the Rules Compendium. |
| #222cyrocloudMay 20, 2008 18:59:18 | @tshern I can't realy speak for how autum chose, but from what I've seen the COers met up in person, which would of been dificult for some one to do if they live on a different continent. |
| #223tshernMay 20, 2008 19:00:10 | The RC is the Rules Compendium. I must've been both retarded and dense when I posted that. Luckily this can hardly make me look more stupid than I already did. @tshern I can't realy speak for how autum chose, but from what I've seen the COers met up in person, which would of been dificult for some one to do if they live on a different continent. Orly? You must be kidding me? And here I was being bitter about not being a part of the playtest! |
| #224logicninjaMay 20, 2008 19:06:00 | Only some of them met up in person (RT is near enough to Autumn and a couple others, I think). I got mailed a manuscript and posted stuff on the forum we used. |

| #226autumn_sereneMay 21, 2008 0:03:48 | Only some of them met up in person (RT is near enough to Autumn and a couple others, I think). I got mailed a manuscript and posted stuff on the forum we used. RT isn't actually near me but happened to be in the same state for the holidays. He had to take a bus for a couple of hours to get here, but the big reason was that he didn't get his manuscript in the mail so we wanted him to see it without breaking any rules and copying/mailing it to him. I was extremely extremely limited in how many people could be picked. For the most part it was based on the folks who were part of the first review project (Rules Compendium) for which I worked with Mel to choose the group. It sucked that I couldn't have a ton of people and had to choose between about 30 amazing candidates. |

It all started at GenCon a couple of years ago with me stalking some of the R&D folks and making them give me their cards because I pimped out this forum.... ah memories... Thank Mel too, she was a huge influence on getting the RC project in place. |
| #228bill_bisco_average_adventurerMay 21, 2008 23:03:42 | This is ironic for me since I got an offer from Wotc_Mel to review Rules Compendium and if I had taken it up, I might have been able to see some 4e stuff. But that's alright, I have confidence in my fellow optimizers who got to take a look at the stuff ![]() |
| #229archerpwrMay 21, 2008 23:41:48 | I feel unloved. No offer for me. |
| #23022_Over_7May 22, 2008 1:03:12 | I feel unloved. No offer for me. And the like...thousands of other board denizens and hundreds of others who regularly visit the CO boards. |
| #231ChristopherGrovesMay 22, 2008 7:17:02 | I got involved through my relationship with Organized Play, the RPGA and D&D Minis. I was heavily involved in the D&D Minis for a while. I'm an admin on a few prominent fan strategy sites, wrote a some training and strategy guides, and really worked to develop the local community here (we now host the regional qualifiers, release tournaments etc). I've judged GenCon and XP minis events (D&D minis, Axis & Allies Minis, Dreamblade) for a few years and they had me playtest Dreamblade when they were launching that (flying out for Dreamblade day is one of my all time favorite geek moments). The guy who won the first D&D Minis championships moved here locally as well and we corresponded before he came ... when he did, we started a new RP group. He drifted out of minis for a while and focused more on RP, landing the spot as the factionmaster for the Blackwheel Company / Xendrik Expeditions for the RPGA ... so our group playtested most of those (we were the BWC group) and wrote a number of modules. There are a couple of other D&D minis / RPGA groups I know of on that list as well (one in Illinois, one in CT and one in the Denver region) who have also been long time organized-play (D&D minis, D&D game day, etc.) so I recognize some of the other names ... people I assumed were playtesting, I talk to all the time but we couldn't really even talk to each other, so that's amusing. In general, they have similar profiles - they heavily support RPGA, Organized Play efforts ... have members that have judged / worked events in the past, etc. |

| #234surrealMay 22, 2008 22:03:34 | I was honetly expecting a rick roll there... |
| #235caelicMay 22, 2008 23:27:27 | Its pretty crappy that you'd have provided feedback and not be credited in some way. Meh. Happened on the Rules Compendium, too. It was fun just the same. And, uhm, yeah...I was in on both the RC and the PHB review. Thanks again, Autumn. |
| #236fil_kearneyMay 23, 2008 12:51:40 | I was honetly expecting a rick roll there... I stumbled across one of Zzak's links to the viking recently, and I felt nostalgic. |
| #237awaken_D_M_golemMay 23, 2008 14:56:01 | I'm waayyy too non-Lawful-ly aligned to have gotten an offer, especially after my early stunt about WotC_Mel's avatar ... Show Something about being not just Charm Person'd, but also Charm Mon[edit] aDMg's personal editor kick's in here: don't make the paranoia mean more than it really does. |
| #238caelicMay 23, 2008 15:23:17 | Caelic ?! Well, to be honest, part of the reason I haven't been around is because it turned out to be harder than I thought to pretend, especially in discussions of fourth edition. In some cases, I found myself having to maintain positions I knew were wrong, simply because changing them could've given something away. Another part of it's just that people have gotten so angry in the last several months. I come here to have fun, not to fight with people. The CO Boards aren't so bad in that respect, but some of the other boards...man. |
| #239logicninjaMay 23, 2008 15:40:31 | RPG editions: Serious freaking business. |

You know... thinking back a ways, I think I got a PM (or was it an e-mail...) from Mel for this also, and turned it down because I was too busy. I'd forgotten about it, until now. Edit: Yeah, it was an e-mail. I kept a copy of it, heh. I was just finishing up my PhD and working like 80 hours a week at the time. |
| #242autumn_sereneMay 24, 2008 9:51:02 | Yep, I gave Mel a list of folks I thought would be great and she made the initial offer. When you guys couldn't, we just kept going down the list. |

| #245awaken_D_M_golemMay 28, 2008 15:49:14 | OK. Somebody got 4E a little early ---> So...I recieved a package today... This means I should re-title the thread (if I could) to: And heck, a few of them have ~outed themselves. |
| #246logicninjaMay 28, 2008 16:13:50 | Yeah. I got my books, too, and I was a reviewer. Comparing the power lists from our manuscripts vs. the final version was interesting. |
| #247caelicMay 28, 2008 17:06:55 | Yeah. I got my books, too, and I was a reviewer. Were the changes significant, LN? Specifically, did the concerns we brought up get addressed? |
| #248autumn_sereneMay 28, 2008 17:48:55 | I want all of the CharOp reviewers/ playtesters to know that Andy Collins apologized for the group being left off the list and emailed me yesterday and said:I’ve asked Bart to add a news item recognizing your group’s efforts. |
| #249PrevinMay 28, 2008 17:54:57 | OK. Somebody got 4E a little early ---> So...I recieved a package today... Ironically I have said books as well, but don't want to get banned for posting anything. I will say it took me about 20 minutes to find out when I got to choose powers because I didn't read the PHB in order. Suffice to say it's not listed in the class entries. :P |
| #250logicninjaMay 28, 2008 19:10:32 | Were the changes significant, LN? Specifically, did the concerns we brought up get addressed? Some of'em. Cleric damage got nerfed a bit as recommended; Divine Oracle level 16 power got un-broken; they fixed Wall of Fire, mostly; they got rid of Mage Armor (which was Just Like Blur But Worse, with Blur *right above it* to boot), a bunch of other changes. They didn't make the Ranger a controller or anything extreme, but it seems like our advice was heard (if not always followed). |

| #253autumn_sereneMay 28, 2008 22:32:01 | Huzzah! Sad about the Ranger, though. That was the best recommendation We knew though it would be a long shot and probably wouldn't be taken, but worth hoping for. |
| #254logicninjaMay 28, 2008 23:19:57 | Is there someone I can thank for the rogues? :D Actually, I'm pretty sure they got the Rogue right before they sent us the manuscript. I don't remember too many suggestions we made about the class. Rogues do look like a lot of fun, don't they? |
| #255radicaltaoistMay 29, 2008 0:00:27 | Some of'em. I really really hope they toned down the damage of the Warlord powers like I recommended. If we ever do get our names publicly thanked, I'd like to see a link. Would be good to have on the old resume.;) |
| #256logicninjaMay 29, 2008 0:04:51 | I really really hope they toned down the damage of the Warlord powers like I recommended. I don't remember what we recommended it down from, but Warlord damage looks fine to me. The Warlord is nice, but won't replace a Fighter in melee. |
| #257ChristopherGrovesMay 29, 2008 6:30:32 | That's the barbarian's job. |
| #258radicaltaoistMay 29, 2008 19:02:32 | Good. I don't know if you looked at the class, but it was routinely outdamaging the Rogue (a striker!) when I got my hands on it. |

| #265logicninjaMay 30, 2008 23:55:20 | Sort of. They scale from [W] to 2[W] in Epic, not in Paragon. |
| #266Blade2718May 31, 2008 12:08:01 | Sort of. They scale from [W] to 2[W] in Epic, not in Paragon. Then they didn't because that's the way it was originally. Sucky, if you ask me. I don't think it would have been too broken to do it as I suggested. |
| #267awaken_D_M_golemMay 31, 2008 14:11:03 | Ahh, so it's your fault that some unknown "somebody" got the books early. Andrew Kim So now we start the game of "Where's Caelic ??" |
