I am planning NPCs for my next campaign, and I have questions regarding this build. This character is going to be a Wee Jas necromancer level 7, and he has a bodyguard level 6 (Fighter 1, Cleric 1, Crusader 3, RNV 1; lockdown build)

The bascis :

25 point buy (unkown stat array for now)

Most books (No campaign setting other than Eberron preferably)

Race : Open*

EDIT: 3.5ed

The build

1. Dread Necromancer 1 (Augment Summoning; Spell focus [cojuration]; Corpsecrafter)

2. Cleric 1 (Rebuke undead**; Deathbound and Summoning domains***)

3. Cleric 2 (Destruction retribution)

4. Master of Shrouds (Extra rebuking, rebuke undead) (Desecrate, Summon undead 2,

5. Master of Shrouds (Summon undead[shadow])

6. Master of Shrouds (Open feat****)

7. Master of Shrouds (Summon undead [wraith]

* Probably Human (Necropolitan), but I find the feat Instinctive Darkness appealing. Is there races that give Darkness as a SLA that it's not Drow (+2 LA) nor Tiefling (-2 CHA)?

** I read the Revised Necromancer Handbook, and I'm still not sure how to use this ability

*** I know these domains are not on the Wee Jas domain selection list, but the worshiping is for flavor

**** Would Lifebond be good with the bodyguard?

Spells

Dread Necromancer 1 : Summon Undead 1 x4

Cleric 1 : Chill of the grave (Domain spell; Summon Monster 1 would probably be better, but he's a necromancer, not a strict summoner), Unknown
Cleric 2 : Blade of pain and fear (idem); Desecrate; Summon undead 2; (+ WIS)

Cleric 3 : Fangs of the Vampire King (Idem, but pretty cool spell otherwise); Animate Dead + WIS

Items

No clue. Stat boosters? NPCs are quite poor compared to Pcs (7 200 gp)

Does 2 Shadows are better than 1 Wraith? What happen to the raised Shadows and Wraith? Are they under command of the Necromancer, or do he has to rebuke them? Are they affected by corpsecrafter?

I think it's all. For the moment

EDIT:

I have 2 scenarios for this part of the story

1. The Necromancer hides in a crypt with his bodyguard to build a strong enough army to invade a nearby city

2. The Necromancer walks the earth and build up his army by destroying small villages and thorps.

-> I know that the evil guy sitting on his throne is not the best thing to do, so second scenario is better?

The party will be level 6 at this moment. Is it too powerful for them? (they won't have any full caster)

EDIT: Would Archivist be better than DN? Does the Dark Knowledge (Tactics) is better than a Summon Undead 1 (this is basically the transfer from DN to Archivist) considering it takes 1 move action to do?

Thanks

Look at the Shopping List in my sig for tools for rebuking. The way the ability works is simple enough, though it's unusual for d20:

  1. Roll a turning check (it's a Charisma check, with modifiers for things like 5 ranks in Knowledge: Religion and the equipment I recommend) and compare it to the table (note that equipment can increase your effective cleric level for this table lookup too!). That's the strongest undead in range you can turn, in terms of its HD.
  2. Roll turning damage, which is 2d6 + your Charisma modifier + your turning level (that's your level in all classes that give you turning or rebuking, plus the modifiers from equipment). That's how many Hit Dice worth of undead you can turn.
  3. Starting from the closest undead, look at its Hit Dice. If the undead has more HD than the result of step 1, skip it and move on to the next. If it has that many HD or fewer, compare its HD to your turning damage. If they have fewer HD than you dealt turning damage, then one of two things happen:
  • If your Turning Level is double their HD or higher, they're destroyed outright. Subtract their HD from your turning damage, then proceed to the next closest undead.
  • If your Turning Level is not double their HD or higher, then they're turned. Subtract their HD from your turning damage, then proceed to the next closest undead.
  • This repeats until you run out of undead or turning damage. If, at any point, you hit an undead whose HD is greater than your remaining turning damage, skip it and move on to the next one.

Rebuking is identical to this, except replace "turned" with "rebuked" and "destroyed outright" with "commanded". It's this last reason that you want to use it.

Dread Necromancer and Cleric both stack for Rebuke Undead, and there's plenty of ways to get it higher. That's where the shopping list comes in. (Note: It also works for your other question about general items. Just be sure to use the NPC budget instead of the PC budget.)

More later, if I find time while procrastinating that isn't spent furiously archiving things.
