| #1khalathasMar 11, 2009 17:01:35 | Ok, here's the basis: The party will not be directly involved with the military, and every single player will get leadership for free. Our COHORTS are who are directly involved in the military, each must fulfill a role of some sort, and none will adventure with us. Our adventures will be pivotal to the outcome of battles though. The campaign is a split good vs evil campaign, with my group most likely being good, and another group (run on a different night) taking the side of evil. We start at 15th level, thus cohorts at 13th, but I still prefer full 20 builds. Gestalt in play, even for cohorts. I think I'm going to have mine fill an intelligence specialist role, no combat. So probably something with divination and the like. Psionics are allowed, magic and psionics are DIFFERENT (nontransparency rules). Any book is allowed, heroes of battle is recommended. No infinite loops (Omniscificer) or near-infinite...and sadly no cheater of mystra with free wishes/miracles. ![]() Race can occupy (as a level-broken progressive build) part of the gestalt as well, leaving class for the remainder. I can generally come up with builds myself but at this point I'm fishing for a good race/class(es) combo to start with. Ideas? |
| #2phaedrusxyMar 11, 2009 17:08:01 | It's pretty hard to beat Contact Other Plane for recon. Just cast that over and over once a week, and be creative with the questions. Here is a list I wrote up for a paranoid 20th level wizard: Show 1) What is the first name of the enemy that will be the biggest threat to me in the coming week? (Let's say the answer is Bob) 2) What is the last name of the enemy that will be the biggest threat to me in the coming week? (Let's say the answer is Smith) 3) What is Bob Smith's biggest vulnerability? 4) Which of Bob Smith's capabilities poses the biggest threat to me? 5) What is the best way to counter Bob Smith's biggest threat to me? 6) What day will I face Bob Smith on? 7-12) repeat 1-6 for the second biggest threat of the week. Continue this line of questioning until no further threats are discovered. Then ask things like "Other than the threats I've uncovered today using Contact Other Plane, are there any other defensive measures that will be critical to my survival this week?" If answer is "yes", then "What is the most important of these defensive measures?" and "What day should I take this defensive measure on?" "At what time should I take this defensive measure?" (Repeat for 2nd most important defensive measure, and also for offensive measures) |

| #4jameswilliamogleMar 11, 2009 21:19:22 | I think you'd actually be better off with a non-gestalt build, so you could use Anima Mage. :D I guess for Divination/scouting purposes, it wouldn't really be that much of an improvement, though. I'd definitely dip Binder 1 and take Improved Binding on one side though, at the very least. I forget... In gestalt, if you limit the duel-advancing classes to one side, is that kosher (Anima Mage isn't formally a "theurge" as given in the gestalt rules, and limiting it to one side might be OK with your DM, regardless). Assuming you can: Binder 1 / Cleric 3 / Anima Mage 10 (using the Divine Anima Mage adaptation) / Cleric +4 / Bloodline 2 // Diviner 20 L20 Wizardlies (L9 spells) L17 Clericness (L9 spells) L15 Binderedness (3 vestiges) 3 / day free metamagics Divine feats unlocked (and only 2 feats required for early entry; one is a prereq for Persistent Spell, which you'd take anyways) Spontaneous Divination ability at L5 Extra domain powers at L10, 15, and 20 Thats just a fast and dirty one. If Anima Mage is allowed, this opens up a ton of options |
| #5hsienMar 11, 2009 23:03:23 | Gestalt rules recommends not allowing dual cast procgression PrC's Recommends, doesn't mean its not allowed, as it's DM option but from what I read in past most poeple frown upon allowing it. Limiting to just one priogression doesn't really change that, since your still allowing possible progression from the other gestalt slot If I undrestand correctly, not familiar w/ Anima Mage, but it would be like character taking Ultimate Magus (only advancing wiz though ) for one part of gestalt level but still be allowed to advance sorceror in other gestalt part just to get acces to UM special abilities. I wouldn't go for that, at least not w/o re-designing the PrC, which may then make it less appealable. Top of my head, I could see that with losing 1/2 spell progression, of original PrC, then PrC special ability progression is also cut in half/removed. Would that effect decision for PrC? I would allow dual-progression PrC's if it takes up both Gestalt slots. |
| #6hsienMar 11, 2009 23:21:34 | Back to Cohort idea Concur with Divination specialty, although with focus on Divine side Cloistered Cleric, bonus Knowledge domain Some PrC's to crank out more extra Domains Divine Oracle; bonus Oracle domain Church Inquisitor, bonus Inquistion domain War priest, bonus domain...war? glory? Plus, Unseen Seer, assorted divination benefits Paragnostic Apostle, optional abilities although forget off hand if applicable |
| #7arogenithMar 12, 2009 0:49:39 | weren't you questioning cohorts? or are these cohorts and I'm reading them wrong. Was just grazing over, not reading too into the stats |
| #8khalathasMar 12, 2009 3:01:47 | Dual-progress PrC's will not be allowed, so it has to be fairly straightforward. I was thinking of using the 20-level ghaele racial progression as one "half" since they get cleric casting as part of it, and then building onto that with some wizard on the other half, dweomerkeeper in the middle (advancing arcane casting rather than divine, to avoid overlap), topping it off with 5 levels of contemplative (bonus domain, immunity to disease AND poison...), and should end up fairly proficient, though not masterful at both arcane and divine casting, not limited to specific spells as a sorcerer would be, and locking him in a very well-protected building from which he can do all his magical intelligence gathering semi-safely. I'm using a few ideas FROM the cheater of mystra build, but deliberately not taking it to climax to avoid DM wrath. I AM including initiate of mystra as a feat of course. Thoughts? |
| #9Ethican2Mar 12, 2009 4:28:54 | try dread commando/ swift hunter build could make some sort of super scout. maybe some shadowdancer on that too. |
| #10phaedrusxyMar 12, 2009 10:58:28 | If he's going to be locked in a building all the time, what is Ghaele giving you that cleric wouldn't? Other than a delayed spell progression... |
| #11khalathasMar 12, 2009 13:18:20 | a little better defense, should the need arise, a little more readily available offense should he have to face anything (I can't predict that he'll be able to stay locked away, I can only hope...things NEVER go according to plan). Combines cleric casting with racial benefits including an incorporeal form on demand. It isn't so much a direct benefit as a contingency for the inevitable when something goes wrong. |
