12 hours to go now

So my local comic and game store opens at 11:00 AM Eastern Time, so I've got about 12 hours to go until I can pick up the starter set (and at a discount according to the store owner).

I'm really excited, and I'm also curios to see when the Basic PDF will drop tomorrow.

There isn't a store within a 100 miles of me that's selling them, so I'm more eager for the pdf countdown.

I'm off work tomorrow... but the wife will have the car! ALAS.

I will have to wait til at least 7pm. Oh spite, oh hell!

Anxiously awaiting tomorrow's Basic pdf, as well. I'll have to wait on my starter set (will arrive in a couple of weeks), but that won't stop me from starting a new, long awaited, campaign this weekend!

I'll be running the infamous "N4 Treasure Hunt" to get things rolling

Any word on when or where the Basic download will be available?

It sucks that Wizards website says the one FLGS near me is a WPN store, but they just informed me they won't be selling it until the 15th. This blows, because if they had it 2 weeks earlier I would pay full retail price to them. If I am going to have to wait anyway, I'm going with my cheapest option.

However, I will be reading the hell out of the basic PDF ASAP.

I'm really excited about the PDF release. I'm not sure if I'll be picking up the Starter Set, if I'm correctly understanding its contents. Besides some pre-made adventures, does it have anything that an experienced player would need, that the PDF doesn't?

@mikemearls : Just reviewed the Basic D&D PDF - it clocks in at over 100 pages. Combat, exploration, etc., all in there. #dnd
@Fiddleback : That's not what goes up on the 3rd, though, right? Just the character bits?
‏@mikemearls : Nope - that's what debuts on the 3rd.
@mikemearls : character creation + core rules. DM material in August.

The benefit of the Starter Set for those who are mostly just using the Basic pdf is that you have some monsters and magic items, which aren't yet in the Basic game. Otherwise you'll have to wait until August when the items and monsters are added.

Of course, you can always make characters and have them battle it out arena style...

#30

seti

Jul 02, 2014 16:58:16

Ok, so from what you are saying (pukunui), the free pdf won't be fully playable tomorrow...But will be fully playable in august. Oh well; that does make sense from WotC's business point of view. People want encounters, lol. You could make PCs and have a session or two where the PC's just wander around and talk to NPCs and roleplay, but most people want to fight, lol. Checking out the combat rules, moster stat blocks, and getting the new CR rules is really important, at least to me.

But really, though...If you want to roleplay PCs without any combat...Why do you even need any game rules? (aside from character creation)

Arena style! I didn't think of that...also I could just take the time to make an extra 'evil' party for my PCs to fight, lol. That'd work...and be quite challenging.

While obviously not ideal, by knowing the average stats of the players you can make a reasonable guess at "basic" monster statistics (at least for lower levels). A lot of 3E stuff would work low level as well (throw out BaB, add proficiency, tweak health and damage to taste). Not bulletproof or "official" but gets the job done.

And thay said they would be releasing it during office hours.

Can someone hack into Merls' alarm clock, change the time and have it go off early so we can trick him into thinking that the time is now? All we will need after he gets up is a spot light pointed at a painted replica of the exact scene as it appears outside his window in the day, and some cardboard cut outs of everyone in the WoTC staff to be placed in their offices for when he arrives. Also, find a way to convince him it is day time on his way to work.

I'm pretty happy to see Cure Wounds nerfed a bit.  1d8+mod seems decent enough for a level 1 heal, whereas I found 2d8+2 to be a bit of overkill... overcure... whatev.  I imagine most will be healing for 1d8+3 at level 1.  I have mixed feelings on Burning Hands still dealing 3d6 though.  I'm I the only one  who would have been happy with 2d6 for a level 1 AoE?

I like that cure wounds has been reduced from the playtest, because it makes the life domain bonus to cure wounds spells actually feel like a bonus, rather than just being a "safety net" for really bad rolls not managing to full-heal the target.

As for damaging wizard spells - since they don't add an ability modifier by default, I think it is important to give the ones that cost limited resources a few extra dice so that casting them, as opposed to saving all your spell slots for defense and buff spells, doesn't feel like a bad idea to the guy playing the wizard.

Your going to have to be pretty lucky to 1-shot a party with burning hands.

They all have to be clumped up, they all have to fail their save, and you have to roll better then average to kill the high HP classes.

Assuming a party of 5, 50% save chance, and 2 high HP targets....

.5 * .5 * .5 * .25 * .25 = 0.0078125

1 in 128.

Edit: Woops, forgot "win inititive".  Since a 2d6+3 weapon attack will kill the wizard in 1 shot as well.

1 in 256

Now, if you had 2 wizards....

Good news:  Sales were deemed good.

Bad news:  The stack was still taller than me when I left.  Nor was there a crowd [or anybody] around it.  Very early of course, but it's looking like 5e will be one of the dwarves, unlike 2e or 3e, which were Snow White.
