Well today we just had a 10 hour session of 5E and one of my players stepped up to the plate to run a game as DM. This was the same player who requires his Paladins to be LN and human. Anyway we started off the game with arrival in a fantasy 18th century Portsmouth which was used as a naval yard IIRC. We were following up on a map we found in the LMoP and it liooks like the DM just let us port FR deities to his setting. We done some RPing and investigation at various guild houses before we had a straight out brawl in the street after some sailors decided to try and steal our map after we got it deciphered. We were level 5.

We were told up front about things like guns existing. And the NPCs used guns. The new DM more or less used them from Pathfinder but added the exploding dice mechanic from 2E Combat and Tactics (25% chance keep rolling) and the guns required 3 rounds to reload.

After interrogating the survivors were had a shoot out in a cannon foundry. Kegs of exploding gunpowder were also placed around the location (6d6 damage). A fireball from my light cleric and the wizard= big boom. Going in the back door we discovered a cannon loaded with grapeshot pointed at the main entrance and another fireball was used by the perverted Gnome Transmuter. Another shoot out in an office and we located some papers revealing the base of operations which was in the naval construction yards. The dream of thunderwaving an enemy into molten bronze did not happen.

My friend/DM had downloaded deckplans for a 18th century ship of the line and it was under construction so we got to dive between holes in the decks clearing out the hulk before arriving in hold at the bottom of the ship filled with barrels of gunpowder and a gang of NPCs lead by a swashbuckler who challenged one of us to a single duel (no magic) with option B being La BOOM with the gunpowder. The fighter stepped forward and gave it a good go but a great weapon fighter can’t beat a duelist battle master fighter 2 levels higher than she was. As the hulk lurched and started sliding down the dry dock into the water. A healing word got the fighter back up and we all dived into the harbour due to the wizard using water breathing on us as a ritual at the start of the day. We swam out to a nearby ship that turned out belonged to the swashbuckler type the fighter duelled in the hulk. Long story short since we did not cheat we decided to work together and bail.

The Pirate captain Emilio de la somethingorother had a clipper and the deck plans for that came out of the 2E war captain’s companion boxed set for Spelljammer. We set course for the fantasy equivalent of Jamaica leaving Fantasy England behind. Port Royal was Scuttlecove last seen during the Savage Tide AP in 3.5. Half the party decide to go and visit the Porphyry place from Dungeon 95 that’s a brothel and the random harlot and disease table gets used from the 1st ed DMG. Being a NG cleric of Lathander I offer my services to the madam of the place (as a healer, get your mind out of the gutter) and pick some gossip up from her in regards to a noble family. Said noble family is having trouble with something or other.

We go and see the Hawkworth family and it turns out they are in town because there has been a revolt on their plantation. They have been using Hobgoblin indentured servants to harvest sugar. The Hobgoblins more or less wiped out the Orcs in a genocide and this was their punishment, they do get released after they have worked out their sentence. They were sold to the Hawkworth’s the Imperial Trading Guild. We go to the plantation, stealth around the sugar cane fields and fight a few patrols of hobgoblins. This DM also added hobgoblin traits to the NPCs in the back of the DM PDF so we have hobgoblin Knights, commoners and soldiers to deal with in addition to HG captains and normal HGs. The Hobgoblin Knights are wearing gothinc plate armor and have been paid in imperial marks which gives some clues to who is supporting them.

The final battles take place in the plantation manor and we capture a human who comes from a prestigious imperial family modelled after the Lannisters and Hapsburgs. We interrogate him and find out that a fantasy unified Holy Roman Empire (HRE) is backing revolts throughout fantasy England’s empire. The HRE is run by Teutonic Knights who are the LN human only Paladins and this empire has a population of around 30 million and are building up an armada. The LN Paladins are basically the Teutonic Knights armed with magic and cannons.

So 10 hours of getting shot at with guns, exploding barrels, material used from the 1st ed DMG, Spelljjammer and 3.5. STDs were a risk for the half orc survivor of the genocide, indentured servitude exists and we have a fantasy balance of power between fantasy equivalents of Spain (union with Portugal), England and the HRE. The Elves are also a less than nice naval power and they are Venice. We were awarded some $$$$ shares in a company and a town house+ a ransom form this imperial Knight we captured.  There are no gold pieces the equivalent is an imperial mark, pound, ducats and denari also exist so there is no unified currency. Bad things happen with slavery, sex, genocide being themes and there is a cold war heating up between competing superpowers. 10 hours later and this was a fun session. This is what happens when you let a history major with honours DM, guns, germs, steal with a side touch of random harlots. He also likes Europa Unversalis IV and Crusader Kings II. My character my actually be truying to court a noble lady with somewhat honourable intentions towards marriage.

He is our youngest player as well sob. I have trained him to well it seems. In regards to 5E it is a little odd as the thief is the best healer (healer kit+ cunning action) followed by the Druid using goodberry followed by my Cleric. The tactics are very simple, cast bless with the occasional fireball spell.

That sounded like a blast.  How could you keep going for 10 hours?   I envy your stamina.  Now-a-days, 4 hours or 5 hours would be my limit.  I guess I need the D&D equivilant to Viagra.

Cheers.
