I am reading through an old 1E Dungeon magazine and one of the NPCs lists is a dual class Assassin 12/Magic User 18. I am wondering how one would convert this to E? I was thinking about making it an NPC using an upgraded assasin and archmage hybrid which would mean around CR 13 or 14 perhaps.

For those of you with access to the Dungeon Issue 9 the NPC is Ezoran the Deceiver.

Basic Stats

Str 17

Int 19

Wis 14

Dex 17

Con 15

Cha 18

Comliness (appearence) 17

hp 79

AC -1 (21 in 5E)

He has a few more spells than a 5E wizard but I can always give him some spell scrolls.

Yes, I would take the Assassin from the MM, and give him the Spellcasting ability of a level 18 wizard (just spells, no special feautures).

Then update the Proficiency Bonus to match the kind of challenge you want to give the players.

Maybe as an Arcane Trickster?

Arcane trickster lvl x + wizard level 20-x so that he has level 9 spells. Which is level 17 Wizard. Which does not work so well... Maybe just assassin 3, wizard 17.

I think I will just NPC it and post the conversion here.

I wouldn't bother trying to build out equivalent characters for npcs based on PC rules, just give the NPC the hps, attack bonus, and abilities you want to make it play out like the challenge you believe the 1st edition one to be.  You shouldnt need to spend more than 5 minutes to jot down notes about the basic stats, flavor, and spells you want it to be able to cast. Don't worry about slots, etc, the NPC is either meant to survive a conflict for story reasons and escape, or be taken down long before spell slot limits would matter.
