Now that the DMG is almost here, I'd like to know what the community wants for all that other stuff D&D is famous for. 3 core books has never been all they publish, and it never will be, of course. I don't expect a book a month, but I do want some adventures and 3-4 hardcovers a year.

My list (in no particular order) is:

  • Psionics Handbook. (I want it. Badly. )
  • Player's Options. (More feats, classes/subclasses, races/sub-races, mundane items, all that good stuff.)
  • Manual of the Planes. (Really want to read this, even if I never use it.)
  • MM 2 (Because: Monsters!)
  • Deities and Demigods. (More fluff, and stats for epic powers like Orcus, Bahamut, Moradin, Lolth, etc.)
  •  Setting books.* (Done mostly like gazeteers and illustrated historical books. With setting specific crunch on races, backgrounds, items, feats, classes/sub-classes, etc.)
  • Setting specific adventures to go along with the setting books. (FR gets it; every place should get it.)
  • Epic Handbook. (Beyond level 20 is appealing to many.)
  • Unearthed Arcana. (Because: Options. And, 'cutting room floor' stuff is fun.)
  • Rules Compendium. (A great table reference. 4e's was our most used book by far.)

*I know everyone has settings they love, hate, and are indifferent to, but that's another thread.

So, what's on your wishlist? I probably missed a few, but oh well. I know I'd love to see what's bulleted above eventually.

My wishlist is simple:

Adventure content - optionally including additional character optiosn related to the theme of the adventure.

System agnostic updates of every D&D campaign setting, even the ones I don't like.

What exactly would be the point of a system agnostic update? It sounds like  there wouldn't be anything except the fluff and lore which doesn't need to change just because a few years pass in the real world.

I personally wouldn't want non-PHB PC options linked to adventures...As I don't really buy them, don't want to buy them, and haven't baught any aside from old TSR stuff I find from time to time.

I do want some more crunch for my homebrew, however. It'd bother me if I had to buy Eberron adventures to play/run an artificer. That'd be a terrible (but sadly understandable) WotC money grab. An Eberron setting book would be fine...But not Eberron-specific adventures just to get the 1-4 pages of crunch I want for a class.

That said, AaronOfBarbaria makes a great arguement for 'system agnostic' setting books. I've thought for a while that WotC should publish "A History of (Insert setting here.)" books for a while. Lavishly illustrated, mapped, and absolutely no D&D crunch at all. This would be something that anyone into fantasy fiction, gaming/game design, writing, world-building, illustration, art, fictional history, etc. would like if it were presented right. Not only would they be books that might get many more into actually playing D&D, but all sorts of artists, writers, geeks, whatever, could be happy new WotC/Hasbro customers.

They should still publish 'official' D&D setting books, with crunch and fluff. There's no reason they can't coexist; and even share some content. One in the 'game' section of stores, one in the 'fiction/fantasy' section. TSR put out books like The Art of the Dragonlance Saga. I loved that as a kid, so did many others who didn't even know what D&D was, and hadn't discovered the novels yet. It was a bridge for a lot of people (Including myself) into this hobby.

(EDIT): One way of publishing I'd be cool with would be a Player's Options book that included things like warforged, thri-kreen, artificers, and shamen along with new feats, mundane items, sub-classes, and other humanoid races. Essentially a a PHB 2, but don't call it that, lol. Also, publish lavish setting guides, aka rules agnostic. For adventures, keep them tight as adventures. no new rules, etc. Just a cool adventure, with necessary enemy stat blocks, maps, special story-specific items, NPC's, references to rulebooks (see page xx in the PHB), etc.

That way, we'd have setting agnostic rules (what if I want warforged, but don't want Eberron?), and rules agnostic settings (what if I just want to read about Faerun?). Also pre-written adventures for organized play, and home DM's who want them. I think that might be the best way to do it...4e bugged me with the 'gotta buy the Dark Sun campaign guide to get thri-kreen racial stats, low-or-no magic advancement, and the gladiator theme'. 3e bugged me with the 'Races of...' books, and stuff like warforged only being in an Eberron hardcover.

They definitely need to release some kind of update for FR so we know where the setting as whole stands post-Sundering. I've got the old 2e FR box set as well as the 3e campaign book, but I have no idea how much of that stuff is usable given all the changes that have occurred during the Spellplague and Sundering, and the new crop of adventures (Lost Mines, Tyranny of Dragons) just detail the state of certain little areas of the Realms.

Other stuff I'd like:

- More adventure content

- Psionics (plus a Dark Sun update)

- Monsters as PCs*

The Tyranny of Dragons storyline hasn't really appealed to me, but I do like the sound of the Elemental Evil one that's planned for next year. I've also purchased a whole slew of 1e-4e adventures that I plan on updating and running with the 5e rules.

*A 5e version of Savage Species perhaps. For the first time, I feel ready to allow monstrous PCs in my campaign (goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds, etc), and for the first time, the rules aren't there.

When it comes time for Setting Update Books, check out the 4e Dark Sun pair.  Do that for each setting.

When I was in high school (AD&D era), I did not like Dark Sun at all; who wants to play in a dead world?  When I looked in the 4e book, I was so hooked that I sought out Ashes of Athas to play a DS character.

+1 to the suggestion above to set the clock at the beginning of the Classic Period for each setting.

"Elminster's Guide to the Forgotten Realms" may/may not be the setting-agnostic book asked for above.  Something written from a historian's viewpoint, rather than Abstract Omniscient view, for each major setting would be a bonus.  (And in DragonLance, we already have an NPC whose voice can be used.)

I don't care for trying to stat out gods / goddesses.  Such beings are supposed to be far more powerful than any PC can tackle.  But getting into a fight with a demigod - say, Hercules?  Or Fzoul Chernobyl (whatever his name is)?  Yeah, I can do that.  Cramp the gods' plans for humanity; turn the course of civilization on a different path THAT way.

Divine portfolios and their associated spells/powers/feats were the best part of Divine Power and I would like to see more such in v5.

Eventually, a conversion algorithm for the huge mass of v3.0/3.5 spells.  Might be cheaper (and much less work) than re-writing every last one of them.  And would encourage families getting into the game, as your teenaged kids ask to look at your old rulebooks stored in the back of the closet.

I thought releasing the Warlock in 4e PHB1 was a mistake; there are too many powerful beings to make a Pact with; more than just the 3 options each character class would get out-of-the-box.  I would not mind a series of v5 Arcane Power books, each with more Pacts.  And related Sorcerer bloodlines.  And new spells (for each and every magic-user class) that illustrate the power source's capabilities/gifts.

Setting-specific adventures timed to come out with the Setting Guidebooks (maybe previewing a few pages of material?).  And Adventurers' League plot arcs also set there.  Give everybody a chance to take a break and explore the total universe of D&D.

Psionics for Dark Sun.

I would like (in that order):

1) The Forgotten Realms. With details, not a brief description of each place that I could easily have come up with in 10 minutes. If the world is too vast to have any kind of useful information, then the world needs more than one book.

2) Adventures. I don't care if they're campaign neutral or for a specific to a campaign setting. I can change the names on a map without WoTC's permission.

3) Dark sun (with Psionics).

4) Planescape

5) Ravenloft

6) Character Options. I have more than enough possible character archetypes in the PHB alone to keep me busy so this is really low on my priorities.

7) Monster Manual II

We do need more sorcerer bloodlines.  I am very disappointed that they only had two.

Unlike someone who wrote above, I like customized mechanics for the different settings, I like them to have their own classes or archetypes, and a couple spells that are unique to the setting.

Don't get me wrong, the PHB is pretty great. But, yeah...I want more sorcerer bloodlines, warlock pacts, cleric domains, ranger paths (or whatever they're called) barbarian, and druid stuff. I also want a shaman, artificer/alchemist class, more 'weird' races, (Aasimar!) as well as stuff like racial feats (to extend and enhance racial abilities, which all end after 5th level at the latest; according to the PHB).

It'd be a nice nod to 4e fans to have more martial 'healing' as an option too....Although, from what I've read in the actual book, the 5e PHB does cover the warlord class idea acceptably, despite it being buried in a new vernacular, sub-class, and feat choices. Same with the 4e defender fighter.

There's lots of room for lots of stuff. IMO, the wizard and the fighter are the only 5e classes that were very well flushed out/realized out of the gate. Everyone else has 'missing' stuff. I still beg WotC not to call it the PHB 2, though. Rather, call it something like "Player's Options" and keep it setting neutral. Heck, even psionics could be folded into it to fill out the 320 pages. I would not mind that. As long as 5e psionics were really well thought out and play-tested, and not just re-fluffed wizard and cleric spells...Although I have a sneaking suspicion that 5e psionics will be using the PHB 'uber' spell list too. That's ok, I guess...As long as psionic PC's have a different casting system. In that case, I'd just table rule that wizards cannot get spells like telekenisis, reverse gravity, dominate person/animal, geas, etc, etc. Conversely, psions could not get fire ball, lightening bolt, magic missile, etc. Although, psions could telekenetically chuck small unatended objects at enemies as an at-will cantrip that does physical damage in the 1d6-1d10 range

A single copper piece, pebble, or twig telekenitcally fired at a target being = to a single target cantrip is necessary. Leveling up to 1dx, 2dx, 3dx, 4dx...just like the other casters get....

I want a complete handook on pointy hats for my wizard.  The proper fashion accessory if neccessary for a prominent wizard to move through the echelons of a refined society.  Wizard's lacking these items can not participate in the roleplaying element of character and NPC interaction without very detailed options for pointy hats.  So in closing I would like a 600 page handbook detailiing various pointy of hat of different sizes, colors, icons, sigils, and coats of arms for the purpose of having a unique character that is not just a cardboard cutout like every other wizard in the game.

Thank You

I'd like detailed Campaign Setting sourcebooks, more breadth and depth for classes (new classes, feats and archetypes) and an Unearthed Arcana-type options. I suspect this last wish is what people had in mind with the DMG, and we will see much weeping and gnashing of teeth when the DMG doesn't fit the bill. In time, though, we'll get our "options and dials".

I'll throw my two cents into this discussion.

The books that I want to see are:

A Planescape Setting.  Preferably a box set, because I've always loved those.  They are a great way to package both a Player's Guide, DM's Guide, extra monster book, and maps and posters and even a DM Screen.  Although a book would be great, but boxsets are just fun!

Forgotten Realms setting book:  I don't want 5th Ed Forgotten Realms to wind up like 3E Greyhawk when they released only a Gazeteer and absolutely no other support for the default campaign setting.  Lots has happened in the Realms and a book that offers a full description of the Realms, some great maps, and lots and lots of adventure hooks and setting material would be amazing.  We definitely need a history of the realms that is detailed and accessible for new players.

Psionics Handbook:  I love Psionics, and I want nothing more than to see new rules for Psionics in 5E.  However, we also need setting material and other info on how Psionic characters fit in the world.

Other campaign settings:  Dragonlance, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, and many others should all get updates.

Lastly, I'd love to see a Reverse Dungeon or Savage Species style book that allows players to take on the roles of monsters in the setting.

Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance... no thanks. Dark Sun, yes please. Eberron, Greyhawk, Mystara, Ravenloft, Planescape or Spelljammer would be awesome.

But I think that when it comes to setting books, I'd like something new and different. I don't know what but it's been a loooong time since D&D had a new world to explore. Maybe campaign books for the Feywild and/or Shadowfell (more comprehensive than the 4e books)?

Also, psionics. More player options, especially classes and more archetypes. I also like playing weird races, so some of those. Gamma World and/or Urban Arcana.

Adventures, adventures, adventures. Good ones, not like the early 4e adventures. And not just APs but shorter adventures, too.

Monster books will come whether we want them or not. I'd buy something like an expanded Lords of Madness, though.

In order of what I'd like to see and what I want to see in them...

  1. Player's Options
    • Backgrounds
    • Archetypes
    • Feats
    • NO NEW CLASSES
  2. Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting
    • 3.5 style
    • Very setting specific Player Options - Backgrounds, Archtypes, Feats
    • NO NEW CLASSES
  3. Dragonlance Campaign Setting
    • Licensed out to people that care.
    • Setting specific Player Options - Backgrounds, Archetypes, Feats
    • NO NEW CLASSES
  4. Eberron Campaign Setting
    • Not a fan of Eberron but won't deny fans of Eberron

    • Setting specific Player Options - Backgrounds, Archetypes, Feats
    • NO NEW CLASSES

  5. Ravenloft Campaign Setting
    • Licensed out to people that care.

    • Setting specific Player Options - Backgrounds, Archetypes, Feats
    • NO NEW CLASSES

  6. Greyhawk Campaign Setting
    • Gazeteer style update of the gazeteer
    • NO NEW CLASSES

  7. Manual of the Planes
    • See the original book
    • The Great Wheel
    • Copy & Paste if they must to not f-it-up.
  8.  Fiend Folio
    • If Tome of Horrors doesn't get 5e'd, let's get some of those monsters in print right away.
  9. Psionics Handbook
  10. Unearthed Arcana
  11. Epic Handbook
  12. Monster Manual 2
    • CR1-20, Psionic, Unearthed, Epic monsters
  13. Deities and Demigods
    • See the original
    • Mix in other campaign settings that won't get covered
  14. Dungeons & Dragons Insider
    • SUPPLEMENT PRINT MATERIAL

Underlying theme, no new classes. We have enough and Archetype should cover turning existing classes into what used to be kits or prestige classes for setting specific "classes."

If Dragonlance and Ravenloft were licensed out to publishers that wanted to work on them fans of those settings wouldn't be left out like they were in 5e and it would allow them to come out while WOTC continues working on other products. While I'd like to see Greyhawk licensed out as well, I'm not sure how that would turn out.

If DDI has to make a return it should be to add more to the game products that are coming out. I don't want to see it being this seperate product that has material that SHOULD BE in books but isn't. Like the "extra" pages that were added to the monter manual, that could have been DDI content instead of making it sounds like they were doing us this great favor. I'm sure every book they've ever made has had content cut for page count that could have been released the same day as the book as a web enhancement. I miss web enhancements.

I HATE SPLATBOOKS. Supplement saturation ruins games imo.

However there are a few I would like to see to round out the game system.

1 Psionics containing 3 or 4 classes.

2 Monster Manual 2

3 Magic item compendium

4 Setting books geared toward DM's but with a simple 1 or 2 page player primer. (that I can print and hand out to players)

5 Finish the entire edition with a unearthed arcana type book full of options, ideas....Call it DM toolkit or something similar since it wouldn't actually be a guide.

NOTHING ELSE...please god please no player option splats to make redonk op toons to ruin my games.

My preferences...

Planescape setting - (I'd rather this than a Manual of the Planes, but I'll take what I can get)

Ravenloft setting - (Or something dedicated to horror, maybe a revamp of Ravenloft?)

A new setting - (as others have mentioned, it's been a while since an original campaign setting has come out)

A second monsters manual is always welcome.

Quality adventures, either generic or setting specifiic is fine, but more a collection of short scenarios that can be tied together rather than long running campaign type hardcover books we've gotten so far to kick off 5e

I'm guessing Forgotten Realms will be the first setting book we get, given it's the default setting, which is fine.

I don't want to see any more PHBs unless they each get 1+ years of beta testing. The last thing 5e needs is a glut of new feats and class options that completely break the game.

What I'd like to see for 5e are books that hack the core of 5e and turn it into other styles of gaming. For example Savage Worlds has companions like the fantasy companion, science fiction companion, horror companion, etc and I'd like to see 5e get the same treatment.

A 5e horror companion would have rules, monsters and setting info on how to turn 5e into fantasy horror or even van helsing level horror. A fey companion might cover everything about fey. There'd be a modern companion that'd cover 5e going into a modern day setting. That'd basically be the new d20 modern, except you could do things like combine it with the horror companion for a 1920's Cthuhlu type campaign. I'd like to see a kingdoms companion that went into kingdom level campaigns with sandboxing and hex crawling. A steampunk companion would have Eberron level magic in it.

Basically I'd like to see 5e become the fantasy toolkit rpg. Pick and choose options and create your own custom game.

Without reading anything but the title I can answer immediately:

1. Psionics.

2. Planar or Planescape book. Needs to include any planar info that doesn't make it in to the DMG, with all the essential monsters (archons, guardinals, eladrin, the rest of the common yugoloths, and heirarch modrons are the ones that are foremost in mind) and planetouched races.

3. Oriental Adventures.

While there are a lot more books I would/will buy (Draconomicon comes to mind), those three are the most important ones that I need, in order. I could live without #3 if I had to.

You know what I'd love?  A series of monster books by type (e.g. Dragons, Undead, Fiends, Goblins and Kobolds, etc.) that have:

1) Chapters on tactics and strategy, i.e. how to use their abilities to make life as hard as possible for PCs without having to fudge the dice or house rule (I'm thinking about that thread about "4 17th level characters kill two dragons in 5 rounds")

2) A variety of fully fleshed out lairs with personalities, minions, traps, etc, with advice on how to use the tactics and strategy

3) A couple of pull-out lair maps sized for miniatures

3) Maybe some new variants of the monsters

Slight thread derailment here, but what if Crafting were a template that you added to your character using feat slots?  So Blacksmith 3 would cost 3 feats or attribute increases.

Anybody could be be a smith or alchemist or jeweler, and potentially make magic items, but you sacrifice something for it.

Maybe not a hardcover Rule Book (I think a pdf or Word file would be about the right size):

conversion algorithms for Classic D&D Modules.  (Keep on the Borderlands was one of the playtest scenarios, and I enjoyed pulling out my 25-year-old copy when I got back home.)

I really hope the only classes they release in campaign setting books are those hyper-specific to THAT campaign world. I only say this because I've never been interested in the campaign setting books as the groups I usually play in always make up their own from scratch. I know why people like these books, I just don't want to have to buy them. Personally, I'd like to see:

1. Player's Handbook 2: Just as big and long as PHB1, but without a rules section (or with a smaller rules section that explains a few variants that have come up while playtesting the original rules in PHB1... maybe even an FAQ). Mainly, I want more races (because monster races!), classes (psion, ninja, pirate, necromancer, etc.), more backgrounds, more feats, more spells, more magic items... A book like this is just needed for more player options! Heck, even if they did come out with new classes, backgrounds, feats, spells, etc. only in world specific books, it would be nice if they did a compilation of them in a book like this.

2. Monster Manual 2: Though I think we can all wait on this one. The MM1 just had soooo many monsters in it already!

3. Of least importance but something I still want: an Epic Handbook. Allow characters to go to level 30 and fight the gods, cause who doesn't want to take down a god or an elder force dragon?
